"Grilled Sourdough" burgers

There's almost nothing I like better than a good Grilled Sourdough burger, and there's nothing I hate as much as a bad one. Jack In The Box, Burger King & Carl's all have some sort of this burger, as probably many other fast food places. Doesn't matter where I order them it seems like a crap shoot.

a 1/3 the time the bread seems stale and almost soggy, it's like they grilled it hours ago and it's been sitting around. It has no consistency of something that was grilled even, limp and nasty.

a 1/3 of the time it's a bit fresher but still doesn't seem like it was truly grilled, there's very little crunch to it.

the rest of the time they're good, I ordered a Big Cheeseburger on Grilled Sourdough tonight and it tasted like it had been grilled, was crunchy and delicious. Was almost perfect even. It's really not that hard to throw some butter or oil on a griddle and grill the bread. Why do so many fast food places have a problem doing this? I ate maybe 5 of them from Jack In The Box over the past 45 days and only 1 was done right. But they're so delicious when they come out properly I always find myself ordering them with high hopes, and usually getting let down. It's like when I see a porn movie in the store and the chick on the box is bad ass, but when I get it home the chick ain't the same and the movie blows.

Sorry I know this is a lame rant but it's 2AM and I'm wide awake eating Big Cheeseburgers.

That can't be it though, because the other stuff I order is almost always good. Jack In The Box makes awesome everything, but it's like theem having to grill the bread is just too confusing or something.

They need to send them to some seminar where they can learn how to grill the bread properly. Hot, crunchy, buttery bread with a juicy patty in the middle would be a win every time if they could get it right.

Maybe the 1.2.3. chart doesn't exist for the low volume items?

I've given up on ordering low traffic things, because they're always mangled. kinda sucks.

OP, really, your rant is applicable to food in general. I can feel for you though. Always sucks when you're craving something and then when you get it it kills your appetite because its so bad.

I don't know if it is a regional thing but here in the south where Hardees started, no one really eats there except for breakfast. Food there for the most part sucks.

Seems the only time to get really good fast food is when they are busy,
I love me a Big Mac once in awhile but if you go during off-peak hours
the patties are dry and crappy. Same with the Fillet-O-fish, most of 'em
I send back as I refuse to eat a 1.5 Hr. old piece of fried fish..

That is
really
quite
strange.
There are
many of
these
McDonalds
at which
the food
would be
fine even
during off
peak hours.
But yeah
if it was
really bad
I too would
send it back
to whence
it came.

It doesn't take long for a steaming burger to soften a bun. A matter of minutes if closed in a box or wrapped.

sorry, but white bread gummy burger buns really suck. the best bun for a burger that i've had was made from focaccia bread. yum.

Hardee's used to suck bad years ago (like 10-15) then they went under then came back.

now they are good. not great but darn good. whenver we go to Iowa to visit in-laws we pass one and try to stop for lunch. you get a good burger (and its huge!) for a good price.

You should be ranting about the fact that people can get away with calling just about any crap bread sourdough these days.

Most places assemble the sandwich per order nowadays but if they are using patties
that were cooked long beforehand the end result is still crummy. The local Wendy's
is the same, go there when it's not busy and the meat is way to dry from sitting on
the grill too long, they are supposed to toss those aside for chili but most are to lazy
to do so. Then the fry's, I've had some served to me that were so limpy and old I
felt guilty giving them to the dog. They are supposed to toss 'em when they get
like that but most places will just scoop 'em up and serve them anyway..

I
know
what
you
are
talking
about
here.
The
employees
at
these
places
really
do
not
care
if
the
product
they
are
serving
is
really
still
worth
serving.
You
often
get
less
than
quality
stuff,
but
it's
fast
food
so
what
do
you
expect?
But
you
can
still
get
a
decent
burger
from
Wendy's
or
Carl's.
They
have
some
of
the
better,
actual
"burger
tasting"
burgers
of
all
the
fast
food
places.
You
could
always
send
an
email
to
corporate
and
get
some
coupons
for
free
meals
in
the
mail.

I used to actually enjoy the sourdough bacon cheeseburger from BK before they discontinued it a while back.

I worked at Jack In The Box during my high school years. The sourdough bread is put in a machine that flattens and toasts it really quick. When that machine overheated due to excessive use(burned the bread) we would put the buttered bread slices on the actual burger grill(took about 10 times as long to toast the bread). This happened about 10-20% of the time. BTW you can ask them to toast the bread this way, just be prepared to wait a few extra minutes.

Either have I, but probably for a completely different reason than you.

Wow this is some of the best information I've EVER gotten off ATOT. I have had the burnt crap before, and it was somehow still soft and stale. I am going to go back next week and use the inside knowledge you enlighten me to.
