I wanna fire up my grill and just do steaks for my fam on xmas. Nice and ez.

It'll be like 20-30 degrees.

Does grilling plain work? Or will it struggle to keep temp cuz it's too cold out? I have a 4 burner.

If not. How about 40 deg? The forecast tells me that high but doubtful.

Fire that sucker up and go for it. I've done it with no issues with charcoal.

You don't say which your grill uses, but both propane and natural gas burn slightly hotter than 3500F, so either way, an air temperature a mere 50° lower than "normal" isn't going to make much difference. You should obviously get whatever you're cooking back inside ASAP after it's done, though, since it will of course cool off much more quickly at 20-30 degrees air temperature than it would during warmer weather or at indoor room temperature...

I think it depends on the grill and the wind.

I have a proper fireplace with a chimney in a winter garden at home so the grill is on year-round.

My bigger problem has been with wind interrupting the flames (propane grill) rather than cold temps. I've grilled in below zero in NH with no problems.

works pretty well in fort lauderdale. somehow we manage to keep the grill going at 75 - 80 degrees outside temp.

Uhh why wouldn't it work? Is fire colder in the winter?
We grill (gas and charcoal) year round here in WI. In fact, doing steaks for Christmas Eve dinner.

That is a stellar idea. fortunately for me, it will be 50 degrees.

Even more fortunate for me, is that even though it's at our house, my father-in-law insists on doing the grilling
Fortunate for him, or temps have "skyrocketed" up to 39*... which actually is 50* warmer than it was a week ago.

My temps don't get that cold during the day, right now it's supposed to be around 45-50, and it was 32 overnight, so I don't grill in super cold weather. But I'd guess you're going to be fine so long as wind isn't going to be an issue on a gas grill. I do steaks on charcoal personally, but go for it. Steaks for xmas sounds awesome. I'm stuck with our annual enchilada dinner my wife has been putting on for 15 years...

I've done it. Wind will wreck the party, though, so pick your day carefully or have the grill in a protected area.

Works just fine, just have to keep the heat up higher. Wind barriers help a lot.

this seems relevant

Though to be fair, the weather Thing cuts both ways. I've experienced driving (terrified, on my part, as the pathetic little rental car fish-tailed a good 6 inches left and right driving fast enough to keep up with traffic...) on major highways during the daily late afternoon torrential rain they get during later Summer. Which everyone else on the road seemed to be thinking were No Biggie, but which would have the Authorities up here issuing emergency weather bulletins telling people to say off the roads, and everyone who was already on them pulling over to the side to wait it out...

Yes, my tradition is to grill on the first snowfall of every year. I smoke in my pellet grill & grill on my regular grill (gas/wood/charcoal combo). The temp drop can affect how much heat it puts out (they make special blankets you can throw on top to insulate the grill if needed) & how long it takes to preheat, but it's really not that big of an issue.

You know how you know that the grill is ready in winter? When all the snow melts off it after you turn it on.

I've grilled in february in upstate NY when there was 2 feet of snow on the ground.

While I'm down south now, grilling steak and crab legs is our xmas dinner every year.

I've smoked overnight in below freezing temperatures but never grilled. I worry more about the rain.

I grill year round with a gas grill. There is a small difference, maybe a couple minutes, in grilling times between seasons/weather conditions.

I'm no chef though. I cook meat over fire.

My assless and frontless apron doesn't keep me nearly warm enough to grill outside in the winter.
