I never got real far into GD even though I backed it, I think the issue is the classes didn't appeal to me enough. I remembered in Titan's Quest playing with multiple damage shields at once and loving that but I couldn't match it in this game.

But that said, I have the DLC and all so want to start over. Is there a class in-game which is either heavy damage shield or pet oriented? Or barring that, are there good mods to add pet classes (I guess there are multiple different necromancer mods) that have balanced skills vs. the vanilla classes and that can survive at the hardest difficulties?

Pet oriented would be Conjurer. I have six pets that are up all the time, and two others that have cooldowns.

The Occulist has 3 pets. The Shaman has 1. There is also a high level relic or 2 that has a pet.

The Arcanist has 2 shields. One that you can leave on and forget to reduce damage by 15% and another that lasts 3 seconds of immunity on cooldown.

The Warlock is Arcanist/Occulist. I'm not sure how the Warlock is these days.
The Druid is Arcanist/Shaman. This one is pretty powerful, and can be played as melee, ranged or magic.

ok, so I went conjuror and have the Hellhound, Raven and Briarthorn. It's been going well but now in my low 20s they are getting weaker even though I've maxed the Hellhound and Briarthorn.

I also have a Marrow Band which gives bonus 7% hp to pets and summons a Stalwart Guardian at 5% on hit (22 seconds)
Oh, and I have the Slapping Salazar blade which ill be able to equip in a couple of levels to summon a Harbringer (30 seconds)- that gives a bonus to pets but will kill my DPS, should I still use this and let the pets do all the fighting? Once I equip that I won't be useful at all unless I find a real nice 1 hander to do more damage or just use a shield.

At this point I'm a bit lost as to where to put my points on level, should I just keep level'ing up the pets on their line or are there other lines I should concentrate on? Some say the Primal Spirit is necessary but at first glance it seems rather weak?

And what about devotion, that wasn't there when I last played, are there particular constellations that will boost my pet DPS up significantly?

Your DPS does not matter as a pet Conjurer. I am level 80 and my DPS in Ultimate is 1183. For the most part, only pay attention to Bonus To Pets on gear. Focus on pet damage and attack speed.

My build is this: http://grimcalc.com/build/fDHQF60

Figured this topic could use some revival. Crate is still rolling out constant content updates and there's more talk of the upcoming expansion.

Not only that, but since the release of the modding tools, the community have come together and started some absolutely amazing mods. There are several big-game mods out there right now that do a lot of rebalancing on almost every item, enemy, skill, etc. in the game and on top of those, there's an FCOM type mod that merges all the big names together - called Grimarillion. Just a preliminary glimpse of Grimarillion shows you now have 19 classes to choose from instead of the previous 6 classes.

http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46352

Check it out and hopefully we can get some new blood into the game. Crate has done an amazing job with Grim Dawn and any fans of Diablo 2 and Titan Quest who haven't played or heard of Grim Dawn, definitely needs to check it out. Besides, more money for Crate means more content for us.

I just started playing this about a month ago and enjoying it from an action perspective (very rewarding to destroy mobs!)... but the leveling process and story progression feels far too slow. I'm on my 5th build, about level 20 and I just get kinda bored doing the same quests over and over and over and over for each build, let alone three difficulties.

Any suggestions to make that go faster/better?

That is also my biggest gripe. They don't allow you to completely respect your characters and they make it take far too long to level. Levelling for subsequent characters should take about a quarter of the time as it does now.

Leveling actually is really fast compared to most games. I've been able to take a new character from level 1 to 70ish in just a few days of casual playing and all the big mods out there actually reduce the amount of experience gained simply to slow progression to a normal level.

As for leveling, you can always play on Veteran mode for Normal and skip all the Bounty Board quests. I generally hit level 55-60 before reaching Elite and I don't skip any side-quests nor do I farm that much. Once you reach Elite and Ultimate, it's a better idea to skip most of the trash mobs and just go for heroes and big clusters of enemies.

However, if you're having a hard time leveling and keep making new characters because you get bored, maybe your builds need some tweaking to help you clear mobs. Basically, everything in Veteran should die at the slightest sneeze from your character - if you're having a harder time than that, your build is missing something. Pure poison casters are my favorite and I ran from Veteran to Ultimate without dying a single time and my poison Witch Hunter is the build for my only two level 85 Hardcore characters - the rest died in the 70s. Most run of the mill builds can clear Veteran without any issues, but if you spread your points too thin, you're going to have a hard time. If you sink stat points in the wrong stat, you're going to have a hard time. You can always feel free to post your build(s) here and we can try to assist.

How so? If I play a few hours a day it takes weeks, or a month or two, to get to 70. I do start out on Veteran, and have no troubles. Some builds I have tried do have issues starting towards the end of Elite or in ultimate.

I have a pure pet Conjurer that can clear all of Ultimate. Except maybe the last boss in BoC, and I haven't tried again. I got one shot.

The other successful build I have is a ranged Valdun build. It is a little tough getting towards the Warden in Ultimate. I need to find additional Valdun set pieces.

I also want to try making a tankier character that can do well in the Crucible. I was thinking about the Warborn set.

Some skills make Veteran and Elite a complete joke and with certain gear, you can spam those skills. Canister Bomb, DEE Casters, Storm Druids, certain pet builds, and a few others can literally just walk through Veteran to the middle of Elite without much difficulty. With my last Witch Hunter I built, I was doing 100k+ ticks on bosses once I got my spells off and it was just a matter of watching their HP bar melt in seconds. The moment I got my last constellation (Vile Eruption), I was doing the same thing to the boss in BoC and Log.

The thing that makes a game like this keep its appeal is discovering new ways to tackle the same fights. Every time I make a new character, it is being compared to previous characters. I fight every fight in the same order, and try to discover new ways to beat the fight. I discover new gear which helps me beat the encounters, and new skill combinations. I would hate it if the game changed just because I beat it once, as I couldn't see the progression of characters going through the game. However, as you do learn, experiment, and gather new gear, the game naturally gets much faster to advance in.

It's also my recommendation to NOT go to the forums and find the best builds to play for the first several characters you build. Do not go to the forums until you are stumped on ideas or looking for a spark to make the game more interesting to you. As soon as you start making the best designed characters, you will have a hard time finding new exciting ways to play your next character. You'll hit your peak too soon.

Well, you can go to the forums as there's a wealth of information there. You don't have to look at the current builds, but it is great for other areas.

I'm a believer in avoiding the forums at the start for more than just the builds. At least for this type of game. Figuring out how to approach each fight, and general play can also be a very enjoyable process. Of course if you are stumped, Google away, but some people jump on the forums right away, and it takes much of the mystery and fun out of the game.

I agree with you there. I make it a habit to steer clear of GameFAQs forums for a game until I hit the point where I can contribute something instead of searching for answers. I love figuring things out for myself and unless I can help someone with something, I tend to stay away. Official forums generally have a better atmosphere with far fewer people willing to spoil things for people with topic titles. Steam Discussions and GameFAQs are notorious for trolls who will put end-game spoilers in the topic title just for fun.

Playing through Titan Quest again for the first time in like 10 years. It's aged very well. I never played Immortal Throne, so I'm going to grind through TQ and get the playthrough I never had before.

That said, the quality of TQ is better than I remembered ( i had a crappy pc back then) so Grim Dawn is back on my radar in a big way.

Is there anything about GD that I'll be disappointed about? Or is it a TQ clone with updated story, graphics, etc??

Mostly GD is just better. It has constellation perks to add to your build, and the gear has some more interesting abilities on them. The only gripe I have is that I preferred many of the classes of TQ. I miss skills like Ice Shards from TQ for example.

You really need to check this out then.

As for the rest, GD is a much faster paced version of TQ. There's plenty of hidden content - a few hidden quests that actually make you read texts and think to find the answers. I don't think there will be much to be disappointed over if you are enjoying Titan Quest as Grim Dawn is basically an upgraded version set in a different dimension.
