gross female cop gave me a citation today. stupid hick town

town of what, 5000? i just moved here due to financial ruin, and this chick obviously had been watching me before because she knew where i lived.

she was sitting at the park doing nothing, because nothing ever happens here. she pulls out as i pass and follows me. as soon as i pull into my driveway she flicks on her lights.

i get out with my groceries and she FREAKS OUT. "GET BACK IN YOUR CAR AND SIT DOWN!"

I said "yes this is my car" thinking she asked if i owned the vehicle. she was obviously all riled up and hard to understand.

"SIT IN YOUR CAR NOW!"

she comes up and says "I know you live here. Do you know your registration is expired? "

"yes i do"

"Why is it expired?"

"i dont have any money. thats why im living here in the middle of nowhere. I drive 1 mile to the grocery store and back, you seen me, you know that"

"i know, but youre still driving. I am going to write you a citation and you can fight it in court. Whats the address of this place?" i tell her, then she looks over at the mailbox. "ok" she says.

she goes to her car, comes back with a $175 ticket.

"are you kidding me" i say

"this is what its for blah blah blah" she rambles

"you realize i cant pay that either, right?"

"well youll have to get your registration done and show the judge then, they might let you off the ticket"

"jones is your name?" i ask (fake name im using for here of course)

"yes"

"first name?"

"deputy jones" she smirks

i just half smiled and gave her the "ok, asshole" look and she left. i think from now on when i drive by her im going to flip her off. fucking moron. my family has been in this town over 50 years and pay some of the highest taxes there are here because we own lakefront property. she just pissed me off and i doubt she realizes how many people we know in this town....

There is a bigger rule that says something along the lines of: you must obey lawful and reasonable commands from an officer of the law. Just about any court, I think, will find it reasonable and lawful for an officer to command you to remain in your vehicle during a stop.

In Illinois it reads:

(625 ILCS 5/11-203) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11-203)
Sec. 11-203. Obedience to police officers. No person shall wilfully fail or refuse to comply with any lawful order or direction of any police officer, fireman, or school crossing guard invested by law with authority to direct, control, or regulate traffic. Any person convicted of violating this Section is guilty of a petty offense and shall be subject to a mandatory fine of $150.

I imagine many are states are the same.

My car got impounded because I didn't renew my registration and it was so far overdue. This has also happened to several other people I know. Consider yourself lucky you just got a fine and didn't have to drag your car out of an impound lot somewhere.

I even understand why cops do it, because they maintain control and order and do not want to get hurt, but again they can stop me when i am walking so i do not feel compelled to stay in the car.

I suggets you double check your state law and any state you travel through. It certainly is in my state. If your told to stay in the car and you refuse, you'll end up in the back of another car. It's a safety issue. If you want to check the headlight, say so and you won't be refused by any cop worth a damn. Cops don't like people jumping out of cars. Take a look at the numerous shooting after people jump out of a car firing. It's just not a wise idea.

Think of it another way. You stop, turn the car off, put your hands on the wheel, and turn on the interior light if it's night time. Your going to make the cops day as no one does this. You polite and don't argue assuming your not being railroaded. Or, you jump out of the car and are an ass the whole time. Who do you thinks getting a warning and who's getting a ticket?

That was the one nice thing about New York... registration was something like... $20 a year? I don't even remember because it was so insignificant and done in two-year increments. Although, the initial registration is higher than Pennsylvania was because you get two license plates versus one.

Yes, I consider myself very lucky to not be in the unenviable position of owning multiple vehicles whose total net value is sufficiently high enough to justify $2000 in registration fees. That would truly be the worst thing in all recorded history.
