Group chat iMessage alternative?

We have 5 - 6 friends in a group chat. Sometimes I need my phone and can't turn on silent mode but having 10 -15 messages per minute coming through is a pain in the ass.

I was thinking about moving everyone to another chat platform. This way we can turn off notifications for one application.
The key to moving everyone would be seamless video and picture sharing.
Platforms: iOS, OS X and a windows client.

Any ideas?

That's for all messages. I just want to shut the group chat up.

Whatsapp without a doubt. The whole world already uses it. Why get on Skype and Viber which are dying?

That's a bit of an overstatement, I think. I realize WhatsApp is popular, but I think the overall percentage of people with smartphones who use it is relatively small.

Likely true in the US, but it's pretty much the standard messaging tool worldwide. I give my supplier in Asia my phone # and I get a Whatsapp message in return after my text.

It's a stupid app that doesn't do anything besides messaging. If people had an ounce of brain they would choose Viber, which offers crystal clear quality audio calls too.

Last I checked, people are done with phone calls. It's why carriers are moving towards unlimited talk also.

Yea okay lol. Don't confuse teenagers with people.

Carriers are moving towards unlimited airtime because charging for airtime doesn't pay off as much as charging for data. There are plenty of methods to communicate for free. Face time, face time audio, skype, I'm not going to list them all. Data can be a substitute for voice, but not the other way around.
