Group Collaboration Software

My Boss has assigned me to find a software that will help our small workgroup of 3 be more efficient. As it is now, he sends out emails to his 3 employees with one task that is up for grabs. But it isn't assigned to one person in particular. Instead, the person who volunteers to do it would have to respond back to everyone saying that they will claim it. Is there some sort of software or wesbite that can create a centralized online task queing system, or a place where users can go to see a list of the tasks and claim one? After it is claimed, other users can see that someone else is handling it, and look at the other tasks that haven't been claimed?

We had a similar problem for our company - about seven employees, running about five projects simultaneously. Our eventual solution was TikiWiki; it has a task tracker which we used to monitor task, assignments, status, and any notes. www.tikiwiki.org

Looks like an interesting application. Do you need a special server to run it off of? I wonder if will work at my university.

I think both run off of any host that supports PHP + MySQL. I'm not sure if general Uni accounts will support that; you might need special permissions. But virtually any hosting company will.
