I've had a basic Kyocera KX414 with pre-pay Verizon for over 2 1/2 years now. This fall I'll be moving into my own apartment without a land line so I'll need a more robust/cost-effective plan than pre-pay, which means I'll be getting a normal plan with free night/weekends, IN texting, and all that.

Anyway, obviously I'll be getting a new phone with this, and I really can't find any I really like. I never take pictures so I haven't bought my own digital camera. So, it'd be nice to have a phone that took good enough pictures with flash to help me continue to avoid buying a camera until I'm out of college. Well, it seems the only ones that have a 3.2 MP camera are over $300, and even the ones with a 1.3 MP don't seem to have flash. I also don't own an MP3 player for a similar reason as not having a camera, so a phone that can play music okay and can hold at least a few hundred MB of songs would be nice as well. However I'm not sure how easy any of these phones would be to put music on them. I also hate flip phones pretty much. The only ones I do like are very thin ones like the RAZR. So I've been considering that, or for a non-flip, the SLVR, which I really like except for its crappy camera.

And finally, there's the issue that some phones just have stupid quirks that I might not know about until I buy it. For example, I was considering the Samsung SCH-a930, until I heard from a friend who owns it that it CAN'T save custom words when using T9. So every time I want to curse or say a friend's name or whatever in a text, I have to type it out manually. That basically makes the phone worthless right there.

So, suggestions? What feature should I give up here? I'm currently really tempted by the SLVR just due to looks.

maybe you're expecting too much from a cell phone. Every phone has its flaws, you just have to compromise.

Thanks for the links everyone, posted on HowardForums.

chris7b, yeah I know, that's part of the problem. I know I need to compromise, just can't decide what yet. Should I just forget about music and/or camera capabilities? Just go for the SLVR for its looks? Or maybe the Samsung SCH-a870 since it's only $30 and at least has a flash and built-in 2.5mm jack, which the SLVR does not.

Avoid the SLVR at all costs.

Seriously, just get a Razr V3xx.

Why's that?

Verizon doesn't seem to carry the V3xx, only the V3m. Much difference?

I missed were you said it was for Verizon. Sorry. The V3m is different from the V3xx

If you are on Verizon you'd be limited to CDMA phones. No GSM <3.
Question... How much are you willing to pay for a phone?

Yeah, I've considered Cingular, but Verizon service has been good to me in Pittsburgh.

Probably not more than $100.

your choice will be quite limited even if you get the bonus/reabte by signing the two year contract with cingular or T-mobile.

There seemed to be a decent amount of phones in that range on Cingular's site, but assuming I stick with Verizon, they also had many choices in that range that all featured camera and music capabilities.

I suggest that you forget about using a camera phone as a digital camera substitute. Nothing out on the market is really that great to replace a low- to mid-range digital camera by someone say Canon.
Well, at least something that runs about $100.

Anyone tried the new Samsung Upstage (M620) by Sprint? I'm thinking about trading my A900 for this, but havent heard much on it since it's fairly new.

I used to sell those, like, 3 or 4 years ago ...very nice little phones, very tough, very reliable. Personally, I'd stick to Samsung or LG, I've never liked Nokia phones or Motorola, even though they have a few decent ones. Always check out phonescoop.com before buying, they have an excellent phone finder where you can select all of the different options you want and the carrier you're on, and it'll show you options.

Lose Verizon. Now. Proprietary UI on all their phones, meaning that although the GSM RAZRs and say, the Alltel V3c might behave the same, the Verizon V3c has Verizon's retarded red UI that I'm pretty sure they modeled after LG's nasty UI. Also means you get all sorts of fun quirks with your phone like not being able to use MP3s you've received through Bluetooth as ringtones and only being able to get pictures off your phone by paying Verizon to send them as an e-mail or MMS to a phone that isn't crippled.
Get the Motorola RIZR Z3 once T-Mobile picks it up, or get the RAZR V3xx on Cingular. Samsung SGH-T629 on T-Mobile is nice too.

Yeah, I mean Cingular might offer a better service and phone options, I'm really not sure. But like, if I'm going to forget about camera features and stuff anyway, most Verizon phones would probably be fine for me, so why switch really? What's so bad about the UIs? Coverage-wise they both seem pretty equal around the Pittsburgh/western PA area.

I don't know, I guess I just think you should get what you pay for. You buy the V3i on Cingular and you get a 1 MP camera, Bluetooth, and MP3 ringers; under your complete control. You get the V3m on Verizon and you get a 1 MP camera, crippled Bluetooth (FUBAR'd Object Exchange profile), and are limited to Verizon's $2 ringtones. You're also stuck with dumbed down options/customization; nearly all of their phones, save for Windows Mobile/Palm OS phones, have the same exact (inferior) UI, to "simplify" things for their customers, or rather to save money teaching whoever is on the other end at 611 to help customers with phone-specific problems.

With all that out of the way, I think GSM > CDMA. You can use your phone anywhere in the world, save for Japan and SK, and if you feel like upgrading you don't need to sell your soul for another 2 years; just buy a phone off eBay and pop your SIM into it.

As for the OP's question: Do you need or will you miss any of those features mrsheik mentioned? I have unrestricted bluetooth on my Sprint A900, and I've never used it once to send or receive a single picture or ringtone. If you're one of those people who have an absurd amount of ringtones, then you MIGHT wish you didn't have to buy them OTA or send them to yourself in an MMS message.

As for you, mrsheik, I have one word: Bitpim.

Thanks! My friend was considering flashing his VZW V3m with Alltel's V3c software and loading the VZW PRLs back onto it, although he'd lose his microSD slot's functionality in the process, but this seems WAY easier

You really need to tell us what providers you have in your area.

There are only two cellular technologies in the US-GSM and CDMA.

CDMA is superior in call quality, coverage, and data services-so I recomend them.

There are a few locations where GSM has coverage where CDMA doesn't.

Cingular/AT&T and Tmobile are GSM, Sprint and Verizon are CDMA.
