Bitpim is much easier to use then flashing the phone, because a LOT of work is required above just flashing it and loading the PRL and ERI file (See: howardforums VZW/Motorola section) if you want data services to work.

I actually just bought a KRZR on ebay to do the flashing myself, but it's only because I want to try the MotoUI - I really dislike VZW's simplistic bland UI - not because I need/want Bluetooth.

I got a Sony Ericsson w810i recently and love it! Very nice screen, good reception, outstanding interface. 2.0MP horizontal camera that takes very good pictures for a phone cam, but obviously can't compare to a real camera. It doesn't have a real flash, but it has LEDs, which can do the job in some circumstances. Also has a very nice music player function and comes with good earbuds/handsfree set. Should be $100 or less on a contract.

I like my Sony Ericsson k750i, 2MP camera (with LED light instead of flash), decent MP3 player, good reception etc... cost about $250 unlocked last summer and I have tmobile. Keypad is a bit small for those who text a lot but I only send/receive a few a day.

From my experience with Verizon's UI, I can't stand it. It does seem very bland, even though it branches similarly to almost every other UI, it's just really lame. Only reason I'm still buying Motos is because I <flamesuit> LOVE </flamesuit> their UI. Only one that even comes close is Nokia Series 40.

Probably not more than $100.

your choice will be quite limited even if you get the bonus/reabte by signing the two year contract with cingular or T-mobile.
There seemed to be a decent amount of phones in that range on Cingular's site, but assuming I stick with Verizon, they also had many choices in that range that all featured camera and music capabilities.

T-Mobile pays the best commission. Why else do you think Asian stores offered free K750s and W810s when those phones were first out?

Paying $100 with Verizon or Cingular won't get you too good of a phone, but maybe if you go to Asian stores, your odds will improve.

As for the OP's question: Do you need or will you miss any of those features mrsheik mentioned? I have unrestricted bluetooth on my Sprint A900, and I've never used it once to send or receive a single picture or ringtone. If you're one of those people who have an absurd amount of ringtones, then you MIGHT wish you didn't have to buy them OTA or send them to yourself in an MMS message.

As for you, mrsheik, I have one word: Bitpim.
Yeah, I don't really care about Bluetooth (at least not right now) or ringtones. I probably won't even ever get new ringtones. And since everyone is saying I should probably give up looking for a decent included camera, I don't really care about the difficulty of sending pictures, either. I would like to be able to receive pictures from others easily, though. So I guess I'm just looking for something that I like the looks of and that can play back music decently if I ever want to put a few hundred songs on it. Could the SLVR do this? Can I put regular MP3s on it via USB without iTunes or anything like that?

I live in Piitsburgh so I have all the major carriers available. I've never had a problem with Verizon's (CDMA) service in this area.

Another question, I've read that a lot people like the SLVR but don't like the hinderings that it comes with on Verizon. I've read about unlocking but am not entirely sure what all it entails. Could I "unlock" the Verizon SLVR L7c to replace the software with the default from Motorola instead of Verizon's UI and blocked features?

Nope.

Samsung U600 or P310 for me...some time during the summer, hopefully the U600 gets released by a US GSM carrier or just gets cheaper to import.

How come?

So on default with Verizon, to put MP3s on it I can't use the USB cable, I have to physically remove the card, which itself is under the battery, and insert it into a reader for my PC, and then put the songs on. Geez, fvck that.

I was under the impression that it was possible and quite easy to flash the firmware on motorolas, but I may be wrong.

I do know for a fact that it's possible to flash a Sony Ericsson, though. Mine's flashed and works great. No crappy limitations and no bad interface.

By the way, if you still want a good camera, you should be able to find the SE k790 for around your price range, with a 3 yr contract. 3.2 MP, and a real flash too. That's probably one of the best camera phones there are right now.

Both you and the OP see here. You can flash any of the VZW phones to an Alltel or other CDMA carrier's firmware, it takes some work, but you can even get all the data services working correctly.

You can copy music to the phone using a USB cable using the vCast MEM software.

Edit: And the "Unlocking" you refer to, that's for GSM phones. It lets you unlock the phone to be able to allow it to use a SIM from a different carrier. Unlocking, as it refers to CDMA phones, mainly refers to Sprint phones which need an SPC unlock code to manually program them.

I just got the v3xx and I think it's a great phone. It was only $40 after MIR, although that was with a 2 year Cingular contract.

I like it because of the standard USB interface. With a SD card you can simply drag and drop files to the phone as if it were a USB stick. You can even play MP3's and MPEG4 videos on it. It's not terribly useful, but does come in handy if I'm bored waiting somewhere. The screen is actually pretty high quality, although the battery won't last long if you are using the phone to play movies.

You might check out the LG VX8600. It has the slim form factor, a 2MP camera, and can function as an mp3 player. It probably is your best bet with Verizon. I purchased the Samsung SCH-u740 a few weeks ago and it has been good to me, so I can recommend that too -- unfortunately, it only has a 1.3MP camera (with flash), but has a full qwerty keyboard which is very nice.

bah, you are very limited if you go verizon, I used to have them, great service, shiet selection of phones.

I have T-Mobile and I can change my phones like socks! I currently have a W810i, previously a K750, previous to that a RAZR.

I love the SE now, they are great little candy bar phones.

SIM cards are wonderful!
