I have been running my machine for a couple days now at stock speeds and experiencing only a couple crashes that I attribute to shoddy nVidia unified drivers (usually because the trace messages involved a lot of files that began with "nVxxxx"). And up until now, I haven't had a problem with the 1002 bios detecting my Maxtor SATA diamondmax 10. I tried flashing up to the 1003 at one point but the hard drive instantly vanished. So back to 1002 I went. But last night, when I went to bed I put the machine on Stand By. This morning I came down and tried to bring it up. . .monitor light went from orange to green, fans and lights came on. But blank monitor. Crap! So I reboot and no hard drive detected! CRAP!!! I load bios defaults and reboot again back into bios. Drive is there so I exit and restart. . .Now it disappears again!! DAMMIT ASUS FIX THIS CRAP!!!

I've been having the exact same issues. Luckly I have a stand by IDE drive that i boot to when the SATA disapears.

Oddly I upgraded to 1004.1 using my IDE drive the other day and pu my SATA back in for s@#ts and giggles.

Its been working....

I'm going to try and do some OC tonight and see what happens.

Same issues here too. This is really annoying me. I feel exactly like you do right now, I'm ready to break something. It has been detected before, but when I flashed to 1002 the drive would not recognize. Back to BIOS 1001 I went but still no luck. Well look on the good side, other people ARE having the same issue and it's not our damned fault if we bought a hard drive that was supposed to work and doesn't. Have you guys tried putting this drive on the Silicon SATA RAID controller and running it as JBOD (normal SATA, "just a bunch of disks")?

Same here about the Diamondmax not being recognised. There were two things I did that might have started the problem but can't remember the sequence. I think it was working fine w/ the 1003 bios and then I think problem started when I installed a PCI modem.

Certainly, some weird things happened just after I installed the PCI modem. My PC would post but Windows would only boot about halfway and then hang. My LCD screen also looked faded. When I booted in safe mode and Windows installed the software for the modem, the PC booted fine after that. Weird.

Glad I found this post. I was scratching my head big time. At first I thought I had a bad drive but then I brought in my second Diamondmax from my other place and had the same problem. Now at least I know to wait for a bios fix, or (shudder!) a hardware fix/replacement.

1024MB Corsair DDR 3200 C2PT
WD Raptor 74GB (boot drive)

I have a Maxtor diamondMax 9 SATA connected to port 2 on the Nvidia SATA controller (I'm using it for additional storage, not my main HD) and it was running fine until I replaced the battery on the motherboard.

After I had done this, I noticed that the Bios would detect the Maxtor at startup, but that soon after booting, windows XP would make the sound that it makes when you unplug a USB device, and when I would go through and check everything, I'd find that the Maxtor has disappeared both from explorer and Device manager!

I thought - hang on, what on earth could go wrong by just replacing the battery??!! I had DEFINATELY not changed anything else.

Then I remembered reading this post:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=29&threadid=1493386

and an issue with the Bios being corrupted when you turn the PSU off, and only going back to normal if you clear it. And I HAD obviously turned the PSU off before the battery replacement but HAD NOT cleared the CMOS.

So I switched everything off, took out the psu cable and battery, cleared the CMOS - and now everything is back to normal (er...so far, at lest!)

So those people having problems with their maxtor, have you tried clearing the CMOS? It might work....

I have been running the 1004-001 BIOS for almost 2 weeks now and it seems to have fixed the problem. Also, I don't know if it was the most recent nForce chip drivers or the 1004-001 bios that did it but I am now able to enable NCQ for my drive with no problems either.

The 1004-001 BIOS definitely didn't fix the problem for me, but I am in a worse situation given that i have two Maxtor 300GB DM10 drives. Only one disappears though, the other seems fine. It seems to occur when the operating system isn't shut down properly, a crash or a failed overclock.

Hopefully the 1004 final (asus stopped doing beta bioses?, or are they too experimental to let loose?) will fix the problem.
