this only happens if you check the option to make it happen

PEBKAC

Full of shit. FULL OF SHIT.

You are full of shit.

It's the default, recommended option.

If you don't have automatic updates enabled in Win7, Microsoft nags you to no end and you have to disable a LOT of other services to make it shut up. It only happens late at night, FYI.

In case you doubt that this happens, I can tell you that I've observed it happening other times (somewhat less devastating) on different systems.

I was incapacitated. It is MS's fault that they designed it to restart without permission.

I do keep my systems obsessively up-to-date, but I have been ill for a week and I'm just getting well enough to return to work.

It is NOT OK to restart my computer when I have things open. I flip-out if someone walks in and does it, and I flip-out if MS does it.

Its real easy... set windows update to NOT allow installs unless you approve them..
this was configured the very second you installed the OS.

still your problem not MS.. learn to read the setup screens instead of just pressing OKOKOKOK..

Really? What did I configure incorrectly? I want automatic updates and I keep my system obsessively up-to-date. There's not a configuration option that says "don't restart my shit, Microsoft." The only option is to turn off Automatic Updates.

Only in recent years has Microsoft decided that it's OK to restart your computer instead of asking you to do it.

It appears I was correct to assume you were talking about disabling Automatic Updates entirely. That would be a configuration FAIL.

My automatic updates download the updates, but allow me to specify whether to install them or not. It will not install them and restart without me telling it to. Seems like this setup works just fine and doesn't require me turning off automatic updates.

Again.. this is YOUR problem not MS's just because you are so fucking anal retentive and cant learn to SAVE shit and let Windows do its updates or are too lazy to apply updates when it tells you they are available..MS's fault..

IT fail..

Also, if you REALLY are that anal about it, do this:

Start > Run "gpedit.msc"

Computer Configuration > Administrative Template > Windows Components > Windows Update

Double click on No auto-restart...

Choose Enabled

Hit OK

No you don't. You simply have to tell it not to remind you about Windows Updates in the Action Center. Pretty simple and it's not disabling any services.

I never leave anything vital unsaved in an open program on my desktop. I'm not necessarily thinking about windows doing an auto-reboot and losing my data, but I can think of several other things that could happen at any time and cause my shit to disappear. Just consider this a lesson learned.

There is no lesson to learn here. I was operating at the limits of my ability. I was severely stricken, you see. I ended up being stuck away from home for days. I'd occasionally gain enough consciousnesss to try and remote-in...then pass out or forget what I was doing.

I WANT AUTOMATIC UPDATES.

When an update requires a restart, I want it to ASK me...not WARN me. It used to work this way for a reason. Why Microsoft changed this is inexplicable.

Actually, it has several options. One of them is download patches but but install, which anyone who knows how to work a computer always chooses because we all know that if it auto installs it keeps asking to restart the computer.

Also, it DOES ask you if you want to restart or not.
Don't tell me you've NEVER seen this

This is a classic PEBKAC

So unless Microsoft broke into your house at night and injected you with some disease.....

Try reading. It's not that hard.

You have NO fucking clue how intimately familiar I am with this and the differences between so many versions of Windows...it's what I DO.

I'm offended you'd even suggest I'm an "OK, OK, OK, OK" person. How many times do I have to say that I want updates installed automatically? I don't just want notifications.

I'm the elitist who never runs antivirus software since Win95A...but *gasp* never gets viruses! Part of the reason is because I know what the fuck I'm clicking and what's trustworthy. It's extra important for me to keep up-to-date so I don't have a browser vulnerability exploited or some such thing. Though I wouldn't recommend my "method" to others, I would know immediately if something is running that shouldn't be.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT!

You're telling me that Windows DOESN'T eventually restart if you decline it? I guess I'll just need to show you.

Seriously, I know more about this than ANY of you.

Actually, I completely agree with the OP, but only to a certain extent. If your computer is set to automatically update, you have no choice but to have your computer shut down (if you're not at the keyboard.)

Just for an example, let's suppose you're going to snipe an ebay auction. The auction ends at 2:55. It's 2:51 and you figure you have a couple minutes to run to the kitchen and grab a drink. You come back, and your computer is shut down. *@#$*!!!!

However, in most of the cases the OP mentioned... let's see... if my browser is shut down unexpectedly, it reopens all the same tabs the next time my computer is turned on. Word, Excel, etc., automatically save any progress every minute. Almost every program that I use that I would be entering a lot of data or doing other work with will say "recovered..." the next time I start it up.

And, lastly, you numbnuts out there are assuming the OP set up his operating system to act that way. Perhaps he bought it from Dell?? The operating system is pre-installed?

Hey, know-it-all...you're lucky I even have Ultimate Edition. Or did you know that Home Premium doesn't have gpedit.msc?

Thanks for the tip, though. I'll have to edit the registry on some of my systems for the equivalent tweak.

You should chose: Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them.
Also if you are a domain with some policies set by Group Edit, your admin may have decided to just let MS do what it wants. Even on my work laptop, I get the option of WHEN to let MS do a reboot

See link for how to stop auto restarts (XP 2000)

This link is for Windows 7
