Seriously, I know more about this than ANY of you.
yet none of us posted about losing all our work due to an automatic restart
Seriously, I know more about this than ANY of you.
HOLY FUCKING SHIT!
You're telling me that Windows DOESN'T restart if you decline it? I guess I'll just need to show you.
Seriously, I know more about this than ANY of you.
You have NO fucking clue how intimately familiar I am with this and the differences between so many versions of Windows...it's what I DO.
I'm offended you'd even suggest I'm an "OK, OK, OK, OK" person. How many times do I have to say that I want updates installed automatically? I don't just want notifications.
I'm the elitist who never runs antivirus software since Win95A...but *gasp* never gets viruses! Part of the reason is because I know what the fuck I'm clicking and what's trustworthy. It's extra important for me to keep up-to-date so I don't have a browser vulnerability exploited or some such thing. Though I wouldn't recommend my "method" to others, I would know immediately if something is running that shouldn't be.
Where do you work? Can I get your managers email? Because I should forward this to them. You should be fired if this is "WHAT YOU DO!"
Any competent IT person would know how to have updates downloaded AND installed WITHOUT automatically rebooting a machine AND I've even outlined it clearly in this thread for you AND YOU STILL CAN'T GET IT!
OOoooohhhh you haven't run a fucking antivirus since 95A. Big fat fucking deal, nobody gives a shit. I don't care to run shitty antivirus crap either. I do run MSSE because I have to deal with files which are not under my control all the time. I didn't run an AV until this was the case. I KNOW that I know what I'm fucking doing, and I can have auto updates installed WITHOUT REBOOTING because I know more than you and you can't even USE A FUCKING SEARCH ENGINE to FIND RELEVANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS SHIT.
You've got to be the MOST USELESS IT person ever in the history of useless IT people. You're the type of person who gives REAL IT EXPERTS a bad name because you think you're some expert because you can push a fucking power button.
So no, THANK YOU MICROSOFT for making this turd look like a fool.
Actually, I completely agree with the OP, but only to a certain extent. If your computer is set to automatically update, you have no choice but to have your computer shut down (if you're not at the keyboard.)
And, lastly, you numbnuts out there are assuming the OP set up his operating system to act that way. Perhaps he bought it from Dell?? The operating system is pre-installed?

They didn't. You gave it permission to restart be selecting the options you did for updates.
My point is, I did NOT. I gave it permission to install the updates; NOT restart. Microsoft used to respect this preference. They do not anymore.
Apparently, a PSA is necessary because at least one person in this thread insists that you can postpone the restart forever. Reality: You can't.

That means that I have to stand by and wait while the updates are installed. I simply want automatic updates to behave as it once did...respecting ME as the user of the computer. You should chose: Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them.
Also if you are a domain with some policies set by Group Edit, your admin may have decided to just let MS do what it wants. Even on my work laptop, I get the option of WHEN to let MS do a reboot
See link for how to stop auto restarts (XP 2000)

Really? What did I configure incorrectly? I want automatic updates and I keep my system obsessively up-to-date. There's not a configuration option that says "don't restart my shit, Microsoft." The only option is to turn off Automatic Updates.
Only in recent years has Microsoft decided that it's OK to restart your computer instead of asking you to do it.
What's with all the idiots who think I "didn't know" about the option to notify and manually install updates? Seriously? Of course I know. God-fucking-dammit!
Pretty sure this is a user fail. There is no reason not to set it to DOWNLOAD automatically and ASK before installing. This prevents any automated error in the installation process and/or lost time.
That and if you weren't a cheapass and did things in word instead of notepad it automatically saves drafts every few minutes to a temp file and restores in the event of a loss of power, end of application, restart, whatever.
PEBKAC.
Don't get pissed off at Microsoft just because you don't know how to configure a computer.

Errr, they have an option to download the updates for you automatically but prompt you before installing them.....
Use it then, noob!

Using anything else for quick notes results in massive time wasted trying to strip formatting from the text.
HOW. MANY. TIMES.
THAT'S NOT THE OPTION I WANT.
I'm always multi-tasking and trying to be as productive as possible. Your method forces me to wait while the updates install.
I have a good reason to have updates installed automatically. If one requires a reboot and I'm finished with what I was working on, the reboot should go quickly and I can get back to my work.
Having a computer restart without the user's explicit approval is very bad form. I'm in complete agreement with the OP.
