HOLY FUCKING SHIT!

You're telling me that Windows DOESN'T restart if you decline it? I guess I'll just need to show you.

Seriously, I know more about this than ANY of you.

I bow to thee oh Master of Automatic Updates that runs neither WSUS nor has a GPO in place.

You have NO fucking clue how intimately familiar I am with this and the differences between so many versions of Windows...it's what I DO.

I'm offended you'd even suggest I'm an "OK, OK, OK, OK" person. How many times do I have to say that I want updates installed automatically? I don't just want notifications.

I'm the elitist who never runs antivirus software since Win95A...but *gasp* never gets viruses! Part of the reason is because I know what the fuck I'm clicking and what's trustworthy. It's extra important for me to keep up-to-date so I don't have a browser vulnerability exploited or some such thing. Though I wouldn't recommend my "method" to others, I would know immediately if something is running that shouldn't be.

Where do you work? Can I get your managers email? Because I should forward this to them. You should be fired if this is "WHAT YOU DO!"

Any competent IT person would know how to have updates downloaded AND installed WITHOUT automatically rebooting a machine AND I've even outlined it clearly in this thread for you AND YOU STILL CAN'T GET IT!

OOoooohhhh you haven't run a fucking antivirus since 95A. Big fat fucking deal, nobody gives a shit. I don't care to run shitty antivirus crap either. I do run MSSE because I have to deal with files which are not under my control all the time. I didn't run an AV until this was the case. I KNOW that I know what I'm fucking doing, and I can have auto updates installed WITHOUT REBOOTING because I know more than you and you can't even USE A FUCKING SEARCH ENGINE to FIND RELEVANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS SHIT.

You've got to be the MOST USELESS IT person ever in the history of useless IT people. You're the type of person who gives REAL IT EXPERTS a bad name because you think you're some expert because you can push a fucking power button.

So no, THANK YOU MICROSOFT for making this turd look like a fool.

Your ranting against Microsoft aside, you still walked away from the PC with work unsaved.

If your hard drive had died, you'd be yelling at Western Digital.
If the power had failed, you'd be yelling at the power company.
If your video driver caused your system to blue screen, you'd be yelling at Nvidia.

Saving doesn't take long.

Actually, I completely agree with the OP, but only to a certain extent. If your computer is set to automatically update, you have no choice but to have your computer shut down (if you're not at the keyboard.)

No...you do have a choice.

And, lastly, you numbnuts out there are assuming the OP set up his operating system to act that way. Perhaps he bought it from Dell?? The operating system is pre-installed?

Uhh..he's the one claiming that he knows more than God Himself and is some ultimate IT person.

apparently not.. and you're still a fucking moron. the above paragraph shows exactly the opposite of being an "IT Pro" it shows an incompetent tool that really has no business behind a keyboard at all.
People that think they know shit are worse than those that don't but will ask the question and can accept the answer. You cant.. you have been proven a tool and a moron at least 20x in this thread with even detailed answers on how to accomplish what you want.
I am a MS Systems Administrator.. I set the GPO options to make this happen for a living in a very large corp environment.
just because you are too fucking stupid to read doesn't mean the functionality is not there.
Windows 7 Update works exactly like it has in the past.

Now what you failed to mention was this was a work computer at work while you were home sick.
maybe your Systems Administrator has those options set by GPO and you have no power to set them..
that's how it is here.. My GPOs have it hard coded to update every day at 3am and reboot as needed.
since this is a corp environment there is no argument.. it gets done and you either save your shit or you fail at life.

They didn't. You gave it permission to restart be selecting the options you did for updates.

My point is, I did NOT. I gave it permission to install the updates; NOT restart. Microsoft used to respect this preference. They do not anymore.

Apparently, a PSA is necessary because at least one person in this thread insists that you can postpone the restart forever. Reality: You can't.

Once the update installs it will eventually restart unless you keep telling it to postpone. I remember ages ago they supposedly were going to add hot patching. No idea what came of that or why it doesn't appear to have occurred. Rarely need to restart windows server to get updates, no sure why consumer editions need that all the time.

Wrong. You can, and they do. If you got to that point - you can click postpone till the cows come home. It won't reboot.

Your experience is different because of your own settings, likely setup by an admin with more than 1 fuck to give.

If you did change the setting, another setting took precedence. OR you simply don't understand, e.g did not read and simply clicked through. The choices are simple enough to understand.

An aside is that you could be simply mistaken and never changed the setting.

Reality: You can, and I've showed you how to do it.

Fact: You DID give it permission. This is how Windows Updates has worked since WinXP SP2. IT'S A SIMPLE FACT. The fact that you have the options set how you do INDICATES THAT YOU GAVE IT PERMISSION TO REBOOT.

If you don't want it to reboot, you need to set the options (whichever method you want to use) to do this.

You're accepting the DEFAULTS and claiming that you aren't giving the permission - well you ARE by accepting those defaults and not changing them.

Pretty sure this is a user fail. There is no reason not to set it to DOWNLOAD automatically and ASK before installing. This prevents any automated error in the installation process and/or lost time.

That and if you weren't a cheapass and did things in word instead of notepad it automatically saves drafts every few minutes to a temp file and restores in the event of a loss of power, end of application, restart, whatever.

PEBKAC.

You should chose: Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them.
Also if you are a domain with some policies set by Group Edit, your admin may have decided to just let MS do what it wants. Even on my work laptop, I get the option of WHEN to let MS do a reboot

See link for how to stop auto restarts (XP 2000)

http://www.wikihow.com/Disable-Automatic-Reboot-After-Windows-Update

This link is for Windows 7

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/6042-windows-update-enable-disable-automatic-restart.html
That means that I have to stand by and wait while the updates are installed. I simply want automatic updates to behave as it once did...respecting ME as the user of the computer.

What's with all the idiots who think I "didn't know" about the option to notify and manually install updates? Seriously? Of course I know. God-fucking-dammit!

Really? What did I configure incorrectly? I want automatic updates and I keep my system obsessively up-to-date. There's not a configuration option that says "don't restart my shit, Microsoft." The only option is to turn off Automatic Updates.

Only in recent years has Microsoft decided that it's OK to restart your computer instead of asking you to do it.

Errr, they have an option to download the updates for you automatically but prompt you before installing them.....

HOW. MANY. TIMES.

THAT'S NOT THE OPTION I WANT.

I'm always multi-tasking and trying to be as productive as possible. Your method forces me to wait while the updates install.

I have a good reason to have updates installed automatically. If one requires a reboot and I'm finished with what I was working on, the reboot should go quickly and I can get back to work.

LEARN TO FUCKING READ!

There is a way to do what you want.

1 - DISABLE auto rebooting after updates install.

2 - CHANGE THE SETTINGS so that YOU choose when to install/reboot. If you are worried about your multi-tasking stuff then WAIT UNTIL THE END OF THE DAY BEFORE CLICKING INSTALL and then LOCKING YOUR SYSTEM.

GEE WAS THAT SO HARD??

Oh and his method doesn't force you to wait while they are installed. Are you insane? And THEN you say that your way of rebooting if you're done with working somehow DOESN'T interfere??? Wow...such a moron.
