Hi guys,
Let me clear up some issues.
First, I was the one making up that particular part of the newsletter. No other TA member was responsible for that further.
Second, I didn't have much time to visit the boards for a while, due to private circumstances. That is also why the newsletter didn't appear last monday.
Now, trying to explain how this all happened, from memory.
It was a piece of text, that was mostly written out of frustration and anxiety. It shouldn't be in it like that, but it did. For that I make my sincere apologies to both DPC and TA-members that are understandably offended by some remarks.
How did it come to this:
I was reading the mentioned thread on GoT and watched the discussion. At first I found it amusing and admirable to see the effort by DPC to become No.1 for a day. Then one (Dijkhuis: Team Anandtech heeft zelfs als taktiek verzonnen om alle resterende ogr-25 stubs te downloaden, zodat zij de competitie kunnen winnen doordat de andere teams droog komen te staan. Is this not a lie? I don't see where this is mentioned anywhere on our forum) said, TA was talking about draining all proxies (since this was the time DNet let the stubs issue run more slowly) and prevent Slashdot of getting them. That was the start of a discussion amongst DPC members to actually drain DNet's and TA's(to give TA a piece of their own?). (Don't say it is not meant that way, because I know it is. Why, because I've followed much of the discussions of GoT and have some idea of how and why people react the way the do.) Indeed the rest of the thread is about DPC-internal affairs (won't elaborate on that, it is of no concern to TA).
Just before the topic about draining the proxies, I contacted a few TA-members, of which I knew were doing OGR and asked them to save some stubs for monday. I think I asked them on Friday. This was just to prevent the gap from being a hugue one.
The thing that really ticked me off, was a letter from a DPC-member, in which he was asking me why I wasn't a member of their team. That's ok, I have had a few of those kind and answer politely, no thank you. The most insulting was, that he called me a traitor, because I didn't work for the 'right team' and said some more semi-insulting things.
That caused me to write that phrases:
"planning to cheat" and "What else can you expect from a team, that has no honor and respect for other teams."
I shouldn't have done this, for which I certainly express my sincere apologies. It came out of frustration. I wrote that particular piece right after the combination of reading the thread and receiving the message on Saturday, I think.
Didn't read it over (as I normally do, before I send it) because of lack of time and send the whole thing off.
As said, some things I wrote down out of frustration and I was really angry about all this stuff.
I do apoligize for those phrases. The rest of the text still is as meant by me.
It said:
Hereby, I call upon all TA-members, that are working on the OGR project, to get OGR-stubs from the DPC proxies, if none are available from other places.
Especially notice the last part behind the comma: IF NONE ARE AVAILABLE FROM OTHER PLACES.
Only then go and get the stubs from the DPC-proxies, because that would mean the DPC really drained all proxies.
The list of DPC proxy addresses was only meant as a list that the DPC were using, not being especially OGR-proxies.
Wildhagen
Because your proxy is in that list, didn't mean I accuse you. As said, it was a list of available DPC-proxies.
Fardringle
You read the message as it was meant. Thanks for that, and thanks for reading through the angry part.
BK
I can understand your reaction of not to retaliate, but I hope you can see why that particular piece of text was written in the way it is. Yep, it is wrong, but it happened. Still remains the fact, that draining the proxies was NOT an idea of TA but of DPC.
TGen
I agree partly, but you forget one major important thing. The newsletter was send on monday and the DNet servers were only filling up on tuesday. This could (<== mention this) mean some of your team members were going to drain the stuff.
Why else the talking about getting 10,000 stubs, 25,000 stubs, 1,000 stubs and such Dutchman?, zal mijn voorraad dan maar even vergroten van 600 naar 10.000 ofzo Enlarging your buffers because of the remark of Dijkhuis?.
Some other remarks in the thread, that don't need an English translation:
<< Ik probeer er 25k binnen te trekken nu >>
<< Hehe, en ik ben ook een poging tot de 25K aan het doen >>
<< TA zal wel flink balen van deze actie, in hun fora hebben ze het alleen over /. die alle stubs binnenslurpt, zelf zijn ze zo te zien nog niet al te actief daarmee.... >>
<< Maar goed, humor is het wel. ik hoop alleen dat D.net er niet over aat klagen dat je alle resterende stubs inpikt >>
For now, I'll leave this message to be considered by anybody, that feels the need. I only hope that it will be considered on ALL its merits, not just the ones that suits the most.
CU all, Peter.
