FANTASTIC. Installed 60GB off 7 DVDs, now need another 5GB before playing AFTER patching. And the licence is irrevocably tied to a single PC to a single rockstar crappy DRM social rubbish thingy plus this title requires "periodic entitlement verification" and installation of "authentication software that recognizes certain hardware attributes for entitlement, digital rights management, system, and other support purposes".

And you wonder why people pirate . . . . . . would you like a kidney too? Maybe a lung while you at it? Some balls to sweeten the pot? :hmm:

Thats why I decided not to buy the game. Their DRM is just too restrictive for my tastes. Once you buy a license, you should be able to install the game on any machine you have, as many times as you want..

I figured that phone home, limited activations B.S was done for when securom and starforce bit the dust but I guess I was wrong.

That said, here are some benchmarks from Gamegpu:

As far as Rockstar and PC ports.... I think GTA 1-SA and Max Payne 1 & 2 were solid? GTA IV was sloppy. Then L.A. Noire was pretty good. Max Payne 3 was awesome and this is pretty great too.

Come on people, give us some more benchies.

I can't play until I get home from work. My two 670s should give me ballpark 970 performance I gather.

Just so I understand you correctly, my Social account locks the game so even if I have a secondary system with same social account it will not work?

Yeah I'm really not a fan of this.

Normally I would avoid games that restrict me like that out of principle but they did such a good job with GTAV on the PC I feel like I should encourage that with a day 1 purchase, I do worry that Rockstar are only 1 bad release away from never revisiting the PC platform again.

Pirating is utterly trivial in the 21st century, let's not pretend any more, with a good private tracker or newsgroup you can download at speeds comparable to, or faster than legit digital distribution, and proper scene rules mean that you don't have to worry about viruses and malware etc. Cracks mean that you don't have the same DRM restrictions.

If the DRM ever becomes a problem for legit customers then just download a crack, it should be water off a duck's back in this day and age.

The grass setting will kill performance once you get to an area with lots of vegetation. Crushes my system when I'm in a field full of bushes. The multiplayer is also really buggy.

Was dropping as low as 18fps in those hills and mountains with all that vegetation. This was on a 970 at 768p.Adjusting Grass quality certainly gives more frames here.City i was anywhere from 33-100+ at times but certainly over 60 more times then not.

I may be one of the few with a locked i7 though, maybe this is partially to blame.

I haven't gotten very far in the game but it runs great on my PC. 2560x1440 at 144Hz solid. IIRC it states its using about 2GB of Vram.

Performance is excellent on my rig is sig. vsync on & everything on high & max @2560*1080. never drops below 55fps. Maybe it is the 6 core cpu? heavy grassy areas not really affecting this.

Does the game allow you to play offline? I know you have to be logged onto the Rockstar social but if I lose internet connection is this going to be a problem?

I guess I messed up. I didn't get a Steam version because it still had to use the Rockstar Social Club junk, and I didn't want to layer on the DRM. The problem is that Rockstar's download has no checks in place to verify that you've received non-corrupted files from them.

So, that meant last night I got repeated crashes of the 'errgenzlib2' variety, meaning corrupted game data. Please reboot or re-install the game. Well, I'm not going to re-download 60gb considering they can't verify those files either, so I was left with one simple option to verify my files: Torrents.

I remember reading Gabe Newell's thoughts on piracy, and he said something to the effect of it being a service problem, and not pricing. I had to laugh last night because I don't think that's ever rang truer for me personally. There I was, a day one paid customer, and I had to resort to torrents just so I could verify my own game data (doing a force re-check on my Rockstar directory). I don't really like Steam, or DRM in general, but they at least put the checks in place to ensure a paying customer gets something that works.

Sorry, don't mean to go off on a mini rant, but just kind of frustrating. Hopefully this evening I'll be playing the game and not troubleshooting crashes. :/

Super, uhmm.. your installation is not going to be the same files as what is on the torrents. They use an installer too and have the files packed.

I decided I didn't want the hastle of downloading 60gb anytime I needed a new installation, so I picked up the box version. What kills me is the dvd's are all dvd9, so they read a little slower then dvd 5s, ugh! Still I can't fault them to much, I'm glad they spent a little extra money on dvd9 instead of giving us 10 dvd5s. Maybe i'll finally buy a blueray burner now and copy everything to one (or 2) disc. ^^

XiandreX, I belive you can play offline, logged out of social club, and also losing connection won't effect the single player game, but it sounds just like steam where eventually after a certain amount of time passes (days) it will require a re-authorization online.

Found a odd issue,i got 8gb of ram in my system and no pagefile usually as i simply game. This game crashes the second i hit a hairline over 4gb of ram as if i got only 4gb of ram?I get a windows error about low system memory and the game crashes.

Enable a pagefile and my memory usage overall peaks a bit over 5gb?All 8gb of ram is accounted for.Vram usage is hitting nearly 2900mb before the crash on my 970.

Thanks for the response JeffMD. That is what I was hoping to hear.

windows keeps a ton of stuff in the page file to keep about 1gb of overhead. If you turn the page file off, you can expect it balloon to 4gb overhead. Also applications you thought took only a modest amount of ram would also have stuff in the page file that wasn't crucial but could be loaded quickly "as needed" and are now forced to keep it entirely in ram.

So simply.. turn your page file back on, dummy. Windows has been designed around running with a page file since the 2k NT kernal.

I really hope they add an option to backup the game for those who downloaded the 60gb game!

I plan to format once Windows 10 hits. I really don't want to re-download 60gb....

Look forward to see how modding goes.

I might need to reinstall GTA IV and check out the Police Co-op mod: http://www.lcpdfr.com/ Looks great. Hope it makes it to GTA V.

If you downloaded through Steam, Steam offers a built-in Backup tool.

More importantly, at least with Steam, all you need to do is move the data directory and keep it intact, and then use the Verify Files or whatever that option is called.

Even if the install is through Rockstar Warehouse, I suspect you may be able to simply copy the entire installation directory. On a new install, when you launch the title, I'd expect it to check through the game files and fix up anything it notices, mostly the user directory and any other stuff outside of the main install directory (perhaps Registry keys as well?).

Although I expect this ultra-intrusive/restrictive DRM will probably cry foul on a new install, so expect to be reaching out to Rockstar support regardless of what means of backup/install you choose.

It's actually identical to what I downloaded initially through Rockstar's bunk download client. It was simply a torrent with that entire game directory in the unlocked state, and the trouble files are those large .rpt ones. There was a more labor intensive method of verifying MD5 sums someone posted on Reddit for those couple dozen files, though not worth the time considering the torrent is doing the same thing. But carry on. I fixed it no thanks to Rockstar, and will hopefully be playing this evening and not pulling my hair out.

edit - and you can copy the big data files out of the directory to back them up in a roundabout way. If you delete a few, for example, the Rockstar client detects it and launches the downloader. Still wish I'd have gotten the Steam version though, even with double dipping on DRM.

I actually learned to hate steam when I got final fantasy 14 through them. I was trying to move the install to my ssd and when I couldn't get steam to find it, I copied it back and steam refused to acknowledge the files forcing a full re download. At that point I just downloaded the non-steam installer, and installed it to my ssd. Logging into ff14 doesn't require any steam interaction.

I had this issue, somewhere a few pages ago. 16GB ram here and same thing. I enabled pagefile and issues went away, but I also scaled from 3x1080p down to 1x1080p. Not sure which solved it but something did.

Holy crap the gun fights in this game suck at low levels when you have to use handguns. I swear every TDM/DM I get in it's sheer luck that you actually hit an enemy because they constantly go side to side.

I'm really hoping it gets better when you can play with automatic weapons.

Have you tried it in first person mode with keyboard and mouse? Because it basically feels like a COD clone that way. If you have any FPS experience at all, it's a cakewalk. If you're using a controller, yeah, it can be annoying.
