I was wondering if GTA supported downscaling and how good it would work compared to using traditional AA.

ie render to 4k and downscale to 1080p without AA

What are the good forums for GTA stuff?

Neogaf has a few threads on it, including a PC performance thread that addresses issues like that. Lots of people have gotten downsampling to work at positively insane resolutions. But most are running AA on top of downsampling and using it more for bullshots than actual gameplay. Rendering at 4K and downsampling is way more intensive than basic AA.

Is AA even necessary at 4K?

It's not so much the direct screen resolution you're using but the pixel density the monitor as well as the apparent size that monitor appears in your vision (a factor of both the monitor size and distance from you). Keep in mind that not all 4k resolutions are on the same screen size and not everyone sits the same distance from their monitor.

If you sit far away from 4k on a really small monitor then no you probably don't need AA, if your 4k screen is 50" and only 1 ft from your face, you'll see aliasing easily.

AA performance is something which requires more power the bigger resolution you have so performance hit at 4k is quite insane, it's really bad at just 2560x1600 which is half the amount of pixels.

I found myself sacrificing performance from about 55-60fps down to 40-45fps to go from 2xAA to 4xAA @ 2560x1600, at 30" I could still see a lot of crawling especially on power lines, along the edges of vehicles and tops of buildings. It really makes me want to swap back to my 1080p monitor or possibly drop the cash on another 980.

Hmmmm....and your GPU is clocked higher than mine.
And Im running the game off of a mechanical hdd too. (my SSD is OS only, I put all my games on my HDD)

Im sure you're running the 15.4 beta drivers. (If not...try them, they improve performance a lot )
All I can think of is I run DDU after uninstalling my old drivers from control panel to ensure a clean install of new drivers.

You're running 16gb ram too, so Its not that.

I'm at a loss....those are what my numbers are at those settings.

EDIT: i remember I disable music search in the game settings...although I doubt that's it...but you never know.

i uninstalled the drivers with DDU and also afterburner and reinstalled everything again, now getting much better results with your settings.

Shame that the Heists thing with all that online rubbish gimped the single player campaign which is indeed shorter than IV. And adding Yoga and Hunting and some towing (???) side missions don't make up for it. Rockstar has always made excellent characters and plots. But this. Eh.

Honestly, does anyone think that looks impressive for a PS3 given people's phones are more powerful than the PS3 now? They really squeezed a lot of power out of that PS3. PS4 doesn't look all that much better than the PS3 either. I'd expect the PS4 to look much closer to the PC than the PS3, I mean it should be like 100x more powerful, literally. But it looks like it's about 2x more detailed instead.

Personally I like the single player here a lot more than GTA4. But ironically, I like GTA4's multiplayer better.

Anyone seeing issues with Crossfire in this game?

Cross posting this with a post I made in the VC&G GTA V benchmarks thread:

So, I seem to be discovered that this game does not like my Crossfire setup.

First, Benchmark results with Crossfire:

With CF disabled, the actual experience was quite simply, a world apart, it was immensely superior in feel. So smooth - a framerate cap or even vsync would have made it perfect. With CF enabled, a cap or vsync does nothing. It's a stuttering mess.

I've done a clean install of the Catalyst 15.4 driver, and I've even begun playing around with customizing the application profile in CCC. I tried forcing the Crossfire mode to "Optimize 1x1" and then "AFR Friendly" - no improvement. 1x1 was actually far worse in FPS, though equal in relative lack of smoothness [to the standard CF profile].

Hardware:
2x290X Lightnings in CF (at 1150/1500)
2600K @ 4.4GHz
16GB DDR3-1600
game on SSD (1TB 850 Evo)

edit:

Just to make sure I wasn't losing my mind and ended up on the wrong settings, I tested HPET on in BIOS and set it on in Windows as well. Recently, I determined HPET was the cause of issues since making the move to AMD cards (it's been forever since I last played with settings, but I swear on my 560 Ti's I settled on HPET On/On for smoothness). Games I have tested with HPET Off/Off have shown good smoothness. Unfortunately, this did not fix the stuttering mess that this is with Crossfire enabled.

I never really felt like single player was designed around co-op. You are locked out from switching characters more then you are freely able to switch. And MOST missions still only involve one character. No, I think the reason for 3 characters were the last GTAs were becoming a love it or hate it based on the one character you play. Or that people didn't like that aside from the main character, not enough time was spent with any other characters to really get to know them. Also I imagine making a long storyline around only one character that people would be interested in the entire game was probably a very difficult task, so instead they made a shorter main story line that involved 3 main characters, and at the same time they could create lots of extra content that was specific to each of those characters.

I think the multi player in gta 5 is leagues above 4. For starters, there is nothing in GTA4 multi player that you can't do in gta 5. Second, GTA 5's multi player really seems like the ideal way to extend the life of the game, involving other users and user created content in a seamless fashion. (That said, I never played multiplayer on my ps3 and may get into the pc version eventually. )

Anand benched mobile phones/tablets against the GeForce 7900(PS3=7800GT) series and it was faster in many of the tests. These are phones from two generations ago which is significantly slower than the ones out now.

Yhel, lol, the ps3 is not a 7800gt. It was a good approximation for what we could compare it to visualy at the time, but since then there have been several games like last of us and gta5 that have pressed that benchmark. Oh yea and ice storm is a pretty sucky benchmark that doesn't utilize half the number of polys and shaders that we see in a typical ps3 game let alone pc game. Also one is arm, the other is x86, and one is using directx, the other is not. Heck I bet the models arn't even the same, but I won't go as far as to not believe it.

And really... that picture is a troll. It is obviously a picture from something in the distance. The fact that the ps4 is using VERY HIGH textures and yet clearly the textures we see are not the same means that the ps4 and pc are at difference distances (afaik the extreme distance slider is for object population, not the textures used)

Here is what the ps4 has over the ps3 which makes a huge impact on visual quaity;

1.Major jump in texture detail
2. DX11 shaders (Big Impact)
3. Higher poly count on all cars, more car types available (Big impact)
4. Stronger HBAO (I cant remember if ps3 was using hbao at all) (Big Impact)
5. higher resolution (Big impact)
6. Stronger AA and AF (AF in any driving game is a big impact over no AF)
7. Significantly longer view distance and shadow distance. (Big Impact)
8. Tessellation (Big Impact)
9. Better FPS overall

So what did the pc bring over the ps4?

1. 60fps (Big Impact)
2. Small jump in texture resolution (only one more step after very high, no where near the jump it made to ps4)
3. I am going to assume a stronger HBAO but there is nothing that says it uses anything special like HBAO+. (Not much of a difference)
4. Much stronger AF and better AA. Better AA helps remove jaggies, does not add any detail particularly. (Being able to use a REAL AA makes a Big Impact)
5. PS4 currently runs the normal view distance slider at max, PC gets a new slider which improved details in the distance pretty significantly, but it is also one of those settings only the %1 is able to max out (unless you like playing at 30fps). (Big Impact*)

Higher resolution? I know %99 of the people who play gta5 on pc own no displays that are higher then 1080p. The 4k is a nice perk, but for now it is only enjoyed by the %1. Unlike other settigs, we can't even try 4k to see what it looks like. So we are both playing at 1080p.

I would like to say shadows.. but god damn are GTA's shadows buggy. I maxed mine out using the shadow works option for a while but I still ran into areas, like cut scenes, where shadows dropped to a low res and/or flickered like hell. Now I am just using the normal soft option and using that gained performance elsewhere. -_-

In the end, the PS4 brought over the big things like the new shaders, the new models, the new textures, tessellated materials, and featured a nice boost in resolution and framerates.

PC was able to further this by upping the texture quality a little bit more, offering better AA/AF and 60fps for a smoother image, and then for the monster setups it gives you the option to boost resolution, draw distance, and that is about it. Resolutions and draw distance don't change IQ, the image isn't rendered any different, more details are kept with longer draw distance but it isn't a detail that is not available to the ps4, you just need to be a littler closer. And draw distance makes zero difference when you are indoors, and not very noticeable on city streets. (this has been my experience when I originally ran with the extended distance slider at %50 and %25. I wasn't using flying in my testing, just driving around the city streets from the begging of the game and trying to notice a difference looking down the road. I didn't notice anything so now I am running %0. Obviously when in the air or high up looking down, things look quite different, but for my rig even %25 shaved off 10fps, no other slider has that kind of performance impact)

Im no technical guru but I have eyes and I have to say that from all the comparison screenshots and videos Ive seen, that I see very little difference between the PS3-PS4, but a huge step up when it comes to PC version. Not only higher resolutions and of course less jaggies but the sheer amount of detail along with the additons of more people, animals, vegetation, and just overall "stuff" in general in the PC version. Take for instance the brushguard and driving lights on the van in the pic in the post above.

Really dude? My PC is an antique q9500 cpu with 8gb ram. The only modern thing in it is the 1TB SSD and the r290. And on this old system the PC version is night and day compared to the PS4 which my son has GTAV on. Even with the settings at half the PC blows away any console version of this game. Fortunately I can crank everything at max and still get playable framerates at 1920x1080. PS4 can come close let alone a PS3. Man, the meth is a bitch aint it?

The only thing aging on that thing is the cpu and being an intel running close to 3ghz, it leaves you in good shape. And no, you didn't crank everything max. I know for a fact max extended distance and MSAA would bring that to its knees. I gave you specific details of what is and isn't in each. I could really care less on your opinion of what you think you see in the ps4 version and what you think you see on your pc.

Your second screen shot is more telling and it looks like the LOD on the ps4 simply drops at a shorter distance which can be expected... still without the source pictures to see at what distance the objects are, its all cherry picking. They couldn't even match the time of day. ^^

You fail to mention that a console doesn't have the overhead of DirectX API on Windows so you get more performance out of the same or similar parts.

I think you're blind. The PS4 is a lot better looking than the PS3 game which is the whole point. Anyone who mentions "but the PC looks better" just wants to hear themselves. That's obvious and always was going to be the case. Saying the PS3 is the same as the PS4 in this game is ignorant at best.

Oh really. Well let's have a close up shot. Did you happen to watch the comparison videos in 240p?

In this shot you still want to claim the PS4 game looks like PS3? If you say yes you are only looking to argue and can be further ignored. The PS4 is using much higher resolution assets and higher polygon count models. It's obvious.

I know for a fact max extended distance and MSAA would bring that to its knees. I gave you specific details of what is and isn't in each. I could really care less on your opinion of what you think you see in the ps4 version and what you think you see on your pc.

No, you are wrong, MAXED. Using 4056 out of 4071 on my card. MAXED and I still get min 20fps. And, like I said, even at half the max settings it still look way way better than the PS4. You work for sony or something?

Oh, the the mem is old DDR2. socket 775 mobo. So, yeah, old tech.

We were debating that ps4 version is closer to pc than it is the ps3.

Why would you bother debating that? The PS3 is clearly the weakest, the PS4 is a significant improvement and the PC offers a bigger improvement with a much wider range of customizability (so it could easily look worse than the PS4 on low settings). People running quad Titan X's can make the PC game look like a bigger jump over the PS4 than the PS4 was over the PS3, but they're also spending 10 times the cost of a PS4 on systems to make it look like that. For the average PC user, the game will still look like an improvement over the PS4, but perhaps not the jump the PS4 was over the PS3. Who cares? It's still better, yeah? Do we really need to establish a continuum with the absolute worst and absolute best the game can look, place the PS4 on the continuum and then say "neener, neener, you aren't as good as the best PC in the world on unrealistic settings that virtually no one will actually use!"? Seems kinda silly.

20FPS is shocking. My 5930K is enough to keep closer to 50+, minus the grass dips. Don't you get stuttering and dips frequently?
