So, i finally got this game working despite buying it years ago. Anyway, if i do the Game -> Load option it takes way too long. I am certain that its not really "loading" but just making me wait (for what reason i know not). How can i avoid that nonsense?

GTA IV is a hot contender for "Worst. Port. Ever." Expect slow and erratic behavior. Though it is well playable on my below.

You could try installing the game on an SSD.

Scenario: I die. Load time coming out of hospital is 5 seconds. I die, then go to game -> load and reload, load time is at least two minutes.

I am certain there is nothing going on "behind the scenes" during "load." I was trying to get rid of those ridiculous load screens and found this: "loadingscreens_pc.dat" This is not a "show X while data loads" its a "fuck you and wait while we do nothing" kind of screen.

homecles, 2 min seems kind of extreme. what hardware? first time loads were around 40-60 seconds, which was still painful. Luckily the game streamed well once inside.

How do you know it isn't loading? Are you just upset and making assumptions about it? The game world is fairly large, and it has to load all of it in the exact state you left it, right?

6-disc RAID10 array with an i7 980x and 12GB. If you look at that file i mentioned, its clear that that there is nothing going on behind the scenes, its just a "wait" script.

Did you read my post? Coming out of hospital is 5 seconds, loading a saved game is 2 minutes.

Do you understand how computers work? When you are coming out of the hospital, your game world is already in memory. When you load a saved game, it reloads all of that world into memory. Did you read my post?

Nothing in that game is as bad as annoying assholes on the other side of the world calling you the exact second you get to the opposite side after spending 15 minutes to get there and getting pissed off at you if you don't pick them up in 30 seconds. Niko is not a damn ping pong ball.

Look you nitwit, even if this rubbish software is reloading the entire game, 2 minutes is VERY different than the original load time (once those idiot "wait" load screens are disabled). While "Loading..." is flashing i have looked at resource allocation...guess what? Its ZERO. Kind of makes your whole theory sound rather stupid, eh?

You have looked at the resource allocation? What does that even mean? Did you open the stack of the executable? Did you see what values were being allocated, reallocated, removed, updated?

I love how angry you're getting though. Makes this thread worth it.

Jump into a stolen cop car, have a couple police chase you into a gas station and when a few get within blasting distance of the nearest fuel pump just blast it with a shot gun or go slamming your car into it at full ramming speed!

Screw the missions, blow some stuff up.

jokes aside, 2 minutes is really long for a raid 0 array. his raid controller's probably broken and he's going to lose all his data.

The forced animation and loading screens were terrible in GTA IV. It was a chore just to login and play.

Sleeping Dogs pretty much proved one can make a silky smooth open world GTA game with minimal loading times with no ingame lag.

And a big middle finger to games that doesn't allow players to explicitly disable motion blur and depth of field. Stop forcing that eye pain down our throats.

Turn off vsync. Game loads in 2 seconds. Turn back on. Faster to do that than wait for it to load with vsync on. It's retarded. Maybe there's a script or mod to do it automatically?
