Dear Forum Friends,
I love reading posts here and there are so many sickly smart people I thought someone might be able to help with an issue I'm having.

First, computer specs. I have the following system:

CPU - i7-2600 six cores
HDD - Intel Solid State Drive, 500 series
Graphics Card - GTX670 with 2GB VRAM
RAM - 8GB
Power - 500W

I am certainly not as much of a hardware/software pro as people here, but I've tried to soup up my system and make it perform for all the games I love.

In GTA IV, I have tried two graphics cards, the GTX670 which I currently have and, also, a ATI Radeon 7950 with 3GB VRAM.

With both, when there are trees and water, I get really weird pixelation of the graphics, especially in evening scenes or where light is shining on them. Also, I get occasional pixelation and flaring in other parts of the game.

My native monitor is a 1360x768 resolution. I have tried the game at every available resolution, however, and I still get this problem.

I am updated to the most recent NVIDIA drivers.

Also, the game autodetects my card weird and doesn't think it can handle the highest video settings. That being said, I have played with the settings and have tried every video setting from lowest to highest and that doesn't fix the problem either.

I also tried the console line edit to having no memory limitations on the game.

I appreciate any help as I have read up on and tried everything for almost a month to fix these issues.

Thanks in advance!

I wanted to add that other than the obvious water and tree flickering, I don't seem to have any other problems with the game.

Thanks again for help - would love to hear from someone

Pics of the issues you are experiencing would help. What drivers are you using for each card?

If the only issue is pixelation on trees and water, and nothing else, then it sounds like a driver issue. Have you updated your Nvidia drivers lately?

I will get a screenshot for you guys later tonight when I go home. I thought i had the most recent nvidia drivers...

I have the 306 driver. Should I try the 310 beta driver?

Pictures later today!

I have a GTX670 4GB at home, I'll have to boot up GTAIV and see if I notice anything that you're reporting.

I have the super graphics mod or whatever it's called though.

What patch are you running with GTA 4? the latest? I prefer the latest since I don't use mods and it has extra anti-aliasing settings. is V-sync on or off?

Also, try disabling hyperthreading to see if this matters.

Hi gang - I tried all these things and nothing worked.

I finally used fraps to get some screenshots. Please note the weird white lines, rough textures, water weirdness, tree weirdness and odd popping in of graphics. Keep in mind this is a system with a GTX 670 with 2GB VRAM, an i7-2600 six-core chip, 8gb of ram and a solid state drive. I don't understand why this is happening. I did a clean install of the video driver, clean install of directx. Any help is appreciated. These issues are weird and the game looks so good and smooth on the pc videos I look at on youtube.

Also, in general, the graphics I have seen on other systems and videos seem to be much, much smoother textures than this

Those screens look pretty normal to me

The youtube videos are probably using texture mods and/or ENB series mods that give the game a totally different look.

There is not a "fix". Its called textures from 5+ years ago and no AA. The videos you see are heavily modded.

This is exactly how the game should look. The water reflection was always farked up, I actually keep it on medium to help blur it a little. The resolution you are using is pretty damn low, try and use a high AA if you can.

That's how the game looks at low resolutions unfortunately. You can try adding some AA; FXAA will blur the textures, but at that resolution, it might be your best bet since it will clean up the pixelation in the water and trees. You could also play around with downsampling, but I have my doubts that it would work with your monitor.

I agree most the pics "look" ok to me.. but as a tech I have seen some really wierd stuff from underpowered video cards. it often wont show up till you have played a short while. I know most cant just swap a PSU out for a bigger one to test.. but at 500W, depending on the PSU.. so-so brand or even a good brand failing it could cause some strange issue. I see this more often on ATI cards as they seem to be more sensitive to crap PSU..

Just a thought.

It probably looks pixellated on small objects like tiny water ripples, and leaves, because you running that awful low resolution. The game has to do something with the rendering of the leaves and ripples, with that low resolution you arent giving them many pixels to work with. Little details will turn into garbage.

Why are you running 1360x768 with high powered GPU's like 7950 and 670?

Those cards are designed for 1080p (32 ROP's) thus you arent even really gaining that many FPS by running such an awful low resolution, as these cards are designed to run 1080p in their sleep.

Are you talking about the jagged edges on some things? Try turning on Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering. Sometimes forcing using the video card driver has a better outcome than the built-in options.

Also, look for the GTA IV ENB mod. It has some post-processing effects built-in that might help. As well, it provides you with some of the awesome-looking screenshots you've probably seen.

Wait, why are you running 1360x768 on that monitor? The native resolution is 1920x1080, which, while it won't eliminate the jagged edges problem, will still somewhat reduce it compared to the screens you posted.

Where are you guys seeing built in Anti-Aliasing options for GTA4?

I am currently using FXAA with RadeonPro because I didn't see any Anti-Aliasing options in the graphics settings of the game.
