i have a tbird 1.4 with 256mb ddr sdram on my kr7a-raid motherboard with a geforce2 pro and im getting eaten alive in gta3. i have updated the via drivers, updated the video card drivers and nothing seems to fix it. this seems to be an issue with dx 8.1 . has anybody else experienced this and if so how have you fixed this. i have tried upgrading to MS's fix for dx 8.1 (dx 8.1b redistrobution). im still only getting about 15 fps at 640x480. im dying here, i am out of ideas, any help would be greatful.

I think 15 fps is about all you should be getting. I have never played GTA3, but it probably requires a lot more power in the vid card. If you want better performance get a new card. Go for a GeForce4 ti4200(with 128mb) or ti4400 and overclock it.

I have a Pentium 4 2.0A GHz with 256 RDRAM and a GeForce2 MX400, and GTA3 lags very badly on my system. All my drivers are updated. At 800x600, frame rates drop to 10 to 15 fps. The game is tolerable at 640x480, but its still lags on high detail scenes even with the options turned down. I assumed that this issue is not due to my processor, since my processor is fast enough and memory bandwidth high enough. Clearly, its just that the GeForce2 can't really handle it ...

Try disabling AGP support in dxdiag and setting your AGP aperature way down to 5MB, apparently there is a bad memory leak concerning AGP texturing. Haven't tried it, GTA3 plays pretty good on my rig, but it does suffer a dramatic slowdown seemingly out of the blue at times and then just goes away....worth a shot.

update: disabling AGP support in dxdiag did the trick for me. I no longer have the mysterious slow down. Didn't mess with the AGP aperature bios setting.

Turn off the motion blur if you haven't already. That was destroying me as well when I was using a Voodoo 5 5500 since my card couldn't produce the effect on it's own, it was mauling my 1.4 AMD processor as well. I turned it off and it ran perfectly.
