GTA4 patch disabled my controller

Would be nice if Rockstar actually released a patch that fixed more than it screwed up. The latest patch (1.0.2) totally disable my controller, which was working perfectly before the patch. Guess many people had this problem. I've spent the last 2 hours trying to rig something up but the game just will not detect anything besides mouse/keyboard. The game wants absolutely nothing to do with my controller and has made it impossible for me to use it, no matter what I do. The game now absolutely despises my controller...I can't even describe it. Would just reinstall but then I wouldn't be able to play online, which is pretty much all I do now (or all I used to do). Ayeayeaye, just when I thought Rockstar couldn't of screwed up this port any worse.

Anyone having similar issues? There a workaround out there yet? No? Dandy. I tried the -usedirectinput command line plenty of times.

I did try the Xbox360 controller emu thing but it doesn't work in Vista 64 bit, and the readme instructions were obviously made by someone who's main language isn't english - My computer will not let me replace or delete XInput9_1_0 no matter WHAT I do though, so that could be the problem also.

I just installed the latest update via windows live and wish I hadn't done that!!! I was playing fine with a wireless Thrustmaster controller with a built in steering wheel. It worked great, but now the game won't recognize it at all. Let me know if you hear anything about a fix. This has really made me mad. I already hate having to logon to all that stuff anyway, now I can't even play with my controller!!!!

The 33MB update offers additional graphics customization options including "Water Quality", "Shadow Quality", and "Reflection Resolution", while also fixing more crash issues.

There's also the following for gamepad users: 'Direct input device support is now disabled by default and can only be enabled with the commandline: "-usedirectinput" '.

Why would they do such a thing?

The only controller that doesn't use directinput is the 360 controller I think.

If I had to guess, its probably MS flexing their marketing muscle with GFW licensing. I know most other GFW games did not support my Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2 without any configuration like GTA4 did. Less likely would be Rockstar not wanting to explicitly support various gamepads. Very annoying for sure though, although I actually prefer using KBM for GTA4.

You need to create the file in your GTA4 directory, right click and select New > Text Document and name it "commandline.txt". The open the file, copy and paste:

  • -usedirectinput
Close and save the file.

On another note, they fixed the analog triggers for the wireless Xbox360 controller.

Okay, I don't know what you wanted me to right-click, so I just went to notepad and made a text file that was named commandline.txt I copied and pasted -usedirectinput and saved the file inside the GTAIV folder. It still doesn't work. Is there a particular place inside the GTAIV folder where I am supposed to put this????

%:\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV

Drop your commandline.txt with -usedirectinput in that directory. I just tried it and it works for sure with my Logitech, all keys mapped with all the appropriate button cues as well.

You could reinstall and then not update...that would take a while though, and you would want to be sure to backup your saved games...wherever they are. Of course this would make you unable to play online AND earn any achievements.

The -usedirectinput thing didn't work for me, nor did the 20 other things I tried :x - I might be screwed...I got way too miffed so I gave up on it, but now that I'm cooled down I'll try and work on it some more.

I have no idea where the saved games are on this one. Not like any of the other GTA's. I really don't care about not being able to play online. I just wanted to finish the single player game first. I am 35% through it. I can't drive worth a crap without the gamepad!!! I just read about 20 pages at the GTA forums and it seems as though this patch carries some major problems.

Might check out this thread and see if you can back them up.

Thank the gods I have a 360 controller, everything still working great after the patch, phew!

BTW, why not just get a 360 controller and get away from the hassles? To me, it was the best 40 bucks i spent in a while. What with MS making more console to pc ports, I figure you can never go wrong with a 360 controller.

So does this update slow the game down even more?

I just bought a new 360 wireless controller and installed the driver for it. It is in the device hardware list and it says it is working properly, but when I go to game controllers, it does not show up. It also does not work in the game. Please help, because I just paid $65.00 for this stupid controller!!!

Edit: Nevermind. I took it back to the store and bought a MadCatz 360 controller. My problem is now solved. It works great!!! Now I have digital proportional acceleration and braking, as well as steering.

Thanks for the tip. I thought since -benchmark works when set as a command line option in a shortcut for LaunchGTAIV.exe that -usedirectinput should work that way too. Nope, of course not...

So, creating commandline.txt got my Saitek P2500 working mostly, but it looks like I still have some kind of axis problem. The on foot camera is stuck pointing up... I wonder how I'm going to fix this now, I can't seem to navigate menus very well either with the controller plugged in.
