Many surely have noticed the thread about EarthLink/Mindspring offering DSL for only $39.95/mo .
Well, now Verizon finally gave in and offers the same.
The modem and "activation fee" is waived too, if you sign up by 10/31/00 (a 300$ value as they state it).
But you need a one or three year contract.

Here in Los Angeles they make no promises on WHEN they REALLY get you going.

it's news to whoever has no television.

verizon has a bad rep in NYC.

it's good in some areas though.

i live in nyc, use a different isp which is a "bell" partner.

Earthlink only has a 6 month contract and is 1.5 mbps down and 384 kbps up to Verizon's 640/90. It's insanity I say, also who would want to give Verizon money who didn't have to?

I have DSL with verizon and it's never been down in the last 2+ months I had it. And activation took one week after it was supposed to... not bad considering what's going on with PacBell in SoCal. BTW DSLextreme.com is my ISP and they have been terrific.

i've had verizon/gte dsl for a month now and it's pretty unstable. sometimes i will be online downloading fine and it'll just go out. i don't know. it's a lot better than dial up and pretty fast too. but i had so many problems with it. a lot of others have had problems with verizon also. www.dslreports.com talks about dsl and problems people have had with their companies. oh yeah it comes with a free modem too.

yipperzz: you're right about that. i have the verizon dsl too and it periodically will go out. occasionally it's a widespread problem with the system, usually i have to reboot the dsl modem.

ghetto buck: earthlink is 1.5M/384K in some areas, in others it's the same as verizon's 640/90 (for the same price).

I guess it depends where you are. I have Verizon (formerly GTE) Bronze Plus 768/128 for $39.95. I live on the border between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, and GTE has a much better rep than PacBell. It hardly ever goes down, and the beauty for me is that I have the same IP address I had when I signed last December.

Tough call for me? I had @home and couldn't afford $70 a month for Cable modem service. In the next town over, a friend has Media One (AT&T) for $40 a month. I want to get on DSL and am looking for a $40 a month provider, but will not go with Earthlink, no matter how good their service is suppost to be, I will not support any Scientology based company! The Verizon seems to not be as good of a deal, based on their service. Any other options out there?

I've had GTE/Verizon DSL for almost a year now. Only once did I lose service and that was for about an hour. The speeds have been great.

GetInMyFatBelly:
@home does offer service now for 40$ if you have your own modem, else +10$ for monthly lease. And the beauty is that they DON'T need a long term commitment anymore.
That is of course if you have their TV cable service (which I don't have).

I tried to find out about Verizon, but the CSR didn't know, perhaps you could help me out:

With Verizon DSL do you have a static IP?

How many NIC's can be connected to the modem (with Earthlink I read it is three)?

Thanks.

AFAIK the Verizon DSL is now PPPoE. Long ago (when I got it in spring '99) it was static IP, but I think they switched new customers to PPPoE a while ago. This means that you need a router to connect more than 1 PC to the DSL.

i don't know how many of you guys get such great service with gte/verizon. the first couple months have been great for me but after that everything went downhill. my service died for 4 days and they couldn't even figure out what was wrong. speeds tend to slow down almost everyday but a winipcfg release and modem reset would solve it. sometimes connection would die for no reason and come back in a few minutes. it's a lot of minor things but things that should not happen considering my "phone line is perfectly clear that it's a shame these things are happening." exact wording from the line tester. 50 bux a month is a scam but i guess since it's 40 now, it aint so bad. just make sure there aren't that many people around your neighborhood that goes with the same bronze plus package or else you'll be sharing bandwidth. luckily for me, there isnt so i get bout 80kps downloading from a real good server.

Hoeboy, why would other Bronze Plus users in your 'hood affect your speed? I know cable subscribers share the same neighborhood line, but my understanding was that DSL was a straight shot to the CO.

I get 90+ KBps downloading binaries from alt.binaries.movies and alt.binaries.vcds straight from GTE. That to me is the best benchmark for speed, straight off their servers.

And for more reviews of different DSL providers, see: http://www.dslreports.com/

I have it here in Burington VT and it works as good as it claims too. My only complaint is that I get logged off every so often. Yes I am using Rasppoe. My speeds are 512/81

i signed up just a few months ago when it was at $49.95
can someone tell me if this now means that I only have to pay the new price? Or am I locked in at the old price since i got a 1 year contract?

I think you answered your own question, "1 year contract". But, it doesn't hurt to call and see if they will change it...

You would think that since you're in a contract that you'd be out of luck, but that wasn't the case for me. Verizon actually emailed me and told me that my rate was dropping to $39.95 a month. Sure enough, I just got the phone bill and the ISP portion went from $17.45 to $7.45. Here it's either go with Verizon(the local phone company) for service, a more expensive local ISP, an out of town ISP that may decide to drop service in the area, or stick with 56K. Digital cable just rolled out, so who knows when cable access will start. Other than not being able to get connected for the first week, I've had absolutely spectacular service for the 5 months I've been on. The IP is dynamic, if you absolutely have to have static you'd have to go with a business plan(the home customer service couldn't even tell me the rates). I've only had three IPs the whole time, and the second was only for a couple days when they were replacing a router. If you're wanting to run a server just go with a dynamic IP service like yi.org or dynip just to be on the safe side. Any other questions, check out their FAQ

If you have a P3 processor and go to weboutfitter.com you can get a free modem and a month free from Verizon. No contract required.

Correction on the post

GTE and Bell Atlantic joined together and is now Verizon. No such thing as GTE/Verizon.

I have old-schoolie Verizon (was Bell Atlantic) 640/90 DSL with
no PPOE and the modem & install were free. I'm in Boston, MA and
I get cr@p like DNS failures for an hour or my local gateway will
nod-off for a few hours so I'm completely disconnected.

When I got it last year, it was a way better deal than anything
else out there. I'm getting Earthlink 1.5Mbps installed next Friday.

I'm also getting another 30GB hard drive, just for all that pr0n.

Heheh.

dimwit,

i was told the bronze plus is cheap the way it is is cuz it shares bandwidth. thats why the regular bronze is slower and is the same price. i don't think they even have that option anymore since most people pick the bronze plus.
