I had started out intending to purchase a gtx 1060, but have recently decided to look for a GTX 1070 ti for my 2K monitor.

Before Christmas, prices were hovering around $400, some dipping into the $3XX range. I thought that after-Christmas sales would take the prices even lower, but they appear to be rising substantially, well over $100 price INCREASE!

What is going on here? Today is Dec 28, so shouldn't the prices start to drop soon?

Nvidia is slowly releasing stock of certain cards (like the 1070ti) until they are gone to stabilize pricing. After the mining bust, they were caught with a bunch of excess inventory of the 10 series of cards. It's also likely why they priced the RTX cards the way they did to force most casual gamers to go with the "older" card because of the high costs of the new ones.

As a result, both companies are trying to offload their inventory in a controlled pace, selling it in limited batches to avoid flooding the market and crashing video card prices entirely. The cryptocurrency market is all but impossible to predict, and hardware suppliers in particular are caught in the tough spot: do nothing and let cryptocurrency break the market indefinitely, or try to react and risk having excess inventory when the market needs it the least.

Pascal cards are out of production aren't they? I think Nvidia is just trying to sell their excess inventory they built up during the mining boom in a controlled manner to maximize profits.

Yeah, I doubt they are making any more of them at this point. From the articles I've read, they are just sitting on a huge surplus of them because they ramped up production to keep up with the mining boom demand, and when that popped, people weren't buying anywhere near the amount that they were.

If they released all of their supply to retailers, the price would fall very fast, or the retailers might not even order them (although I've also read that if retailers want the RTX cards, Nvidia is forcing them to accept certain quantities of the 10 series until they're gone).

There is a definely a time limit on selling them at a high price before they just have do liquidation on them because newer cards are being release that are better then the 1070 at the same price or even lower price points.

But they haven't done that yet. The new cards start at $500, so until they launch a card cheaper than that, they can let the 1070ti sit around the $400 range (with mail in rebates being offered by the partners making them $10 - $30 cheaper in some cases).

I've read rumors about them launching a "RTX 2060" or similar card in the spring, but the talk is that it's going to launch around $400. And unless the games being played are coded for ray tracing, it will likely perform at or below the 1070ti in today's titles.

I tell you, the whole GPU market is really screwed up since AMD became noncompetitive. I sure hope AMD can turn it around next year, and heck maybe Intel will get it right this time when they launch their discrete GPUs in late 2019 or 2020.

I currently use an NVidia 9800 GSO card in my system and surely it would not be sufficient to run games that are curently popular. Since it's been awhile since I've played any pc games (generally first person shooters, always single-player) I'd like to get a new card pretty soon.

Sounds like the only strategy available to me is to keep searching and perhaps run into a good bargain (~$350 for a 1070 ti). No telling when the manufacturers will bring down prices.

Wow, perhaps I should wait a week or two for the 2060??

I had just read about this card this morning. It's going to be interesting for sure. I don't see why you wouldn't wait.

I'm guessing when the 2060 comes out, you'll be able to get some sweet deals on the 1070ti. We'll just have to wait and see what the benchmarks show.
