Think there may have been quite a few more preorders to clear for the 1080's. Not quite why - the 1070 will surely end up selling somewhat more in the end - but maybe its only the very top card which attracts this truly devoted following.

I don't think it's about a "devoted following."

A few days ago, a buddy of mine (not a PC enthusiast by any means) shot me an e-mail telling me that he wants to build a gaming PC to last him 4-5 years, along with a preliminary parts list. In this parts list was, unsurprisingly, a GeForce GTX 1080. He picked it because it is the fastest thing on the market and he wants maximum longevity from his system.

I told him that the 1080s are very hard to find and that he has to be diligent about finding the card. Within a day, he had managed to snag himself a 1080 FE.

I know some people are proponents of buying cheaper cards and buying them more often, but some people really loathe the idea of opening up their systems once they've put them together. They would much rather replace a component once it can no longer do the job, and the more time they can get with that component, the better.

Ya, that's fine, but the $700 GTX1080 FE is still not worth it for the price for longevity over 4-5 years because of this:
http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/geforce-gtx-1070-2-way-sli-review,1.html

If the goal is to build a "future-proof" rig and the budget easily stretches to $700 for the GPU, it makes no sense not to consider GTX1070 SLI. This is especially true since after-market GTX1070 SLI is going to be very close to GTX1080 FE SLI. 1080 FE is only 16% faster than the MSI Gaming X 1070. The MSI Gaming X isn't even as fast as the GTX1070 G1 that boosts to nearly 2Ghz out of the box!

Time and time again I see less experienced/knowledgeable PC builders making this same mistake over and over. They gravitate towards NV's fastest card with the hope to keep the system for 4-5 years. This is by far the biggest and worst mistake for high-end PC building, other than skimping on a quality PSU or worse yet pairing a GTX1080 level card with a POS 24-25" 1080p 60Hz monitor.

Same reason I recommended R9 290X CF/R9 295X2/970 SLI over 980 and today it's clear the dual card setups are superior to 980 when the going gets tough.

In 6 years, Nvidia's GPU performance has increased 5.11X @ 2560x1600
http://www.techspot.com/article/1191-nvidia-geforce-six-generations-tested/page6.html

Your friend would have been way better off buying a $400 GTX1070, throwing it into the garbage in 3 years from now, then buying another $400 card in 2019 and keeping it until 2022.

Also, swapping a graphics card takes 5 minutes. You should have explained to him the procedure involved:

1) unscrew/open the side panel and unplug the HDMI/DVI cable
2) disconnect the PCIe cables
3) take out the videocard (sometimes require unlatching the PCIe slot and unscrewing 1 screw)
4) put in a new videocard and the PCIe slot latch usually snaps automatically
5) use a thumbscrew/screwdriver for 1 screw
6) close the side panel and connect back the HDMI/DVI cable

JaysTwoCents' little daughter could do it.

I am surprised you didn't offer your friend to go GTX1070 SLI or just a single GTX1070 and you'd replace the GPU for him in 3 years.

I love you RS but there is no way I could ever agree that any cf or SLI setup is better than a single card. Your best gameplay experience will always be had with one card (unless your single card is keeping you < 30 fps in a game in which case it's time for a new single card upgrade anyways)

Your suggestion of the 1070 is the best way to go.

Not all games properly utilize SLI, and the trend seems to be towards more games not utilizing GPUs. If you play games that don't scale with SLI, guess what? Your second 1070 is going to be a $449 brick in your PC.

The 1080 will deliver better performance over its lifetime than the 1070, though. "Value" is really relative and highly dependent on what one does with the system.

He's putting the system together on his own, the actual mechanics aren't a problem.

I will always prefer faster single GPU solution over multiple slower GPUs. I only recommend SLI if you've maxed out what you can do with a single GPU and need more performance.

Gotta keep your eyes open and pull the trigger quickly ! I stopped waiting for an aftermarket 1080 and just grabbed a FE when it was in stock and slapped a 980ti hybrid AIO on there.

I wanted a GTX 1080 and when the ZOTAC GTX 1080 FE popped up I snagged it, even though I was going to water cool it with an EK block.

I've had it since @ June 14 and have been VERY happy with it.

I'm almost starting to lean toward just grabbing a couple of whichever ones pop up on Newegg first.....but Id still prefer something in the upper AIB end of things.....but my resolve is weakening...

EDIT: whoops, this is the 1080 thread, not the 1070 thread. You are probably looking for 1080s. My bad.

I honestly did think about doing 1070s instead..................at least they can be found from time to time in nonFE editions....

I was seriously tempted to hold out for a 1080 non-FE but found an MSI Gaming X 1070 in stock and newegg and decided to go for it. I game at 1440p and don't need every bit of eye candy turned on so it should be fine for my uses.

I've been 1440 for a while but, the lure of playing on the 4k projector in the other room is just to great to resist any longer. Alas....dual 780s that I have no dont cut it (cept in Borderlands)

Lol these are the people who buy a honda civic, throw $30k into it and think they can run with a real sports car and write 20 paragraphs to justify it.

Ok, Im just complaining now. I HAD IT!!!! Had an FTW at MSRP in the cart and errrything! In the 2-3 seconds it took to copy paste my gift card info though....I was thrown back into "Auto-Notify" hell....noooooooooooo

As for Byte, Interesting points. Dont get me wrong, I am no fan of those obnoxious Civic/Subaru/Prelude rides with them 30k of mods......but I have also seen such cars leave an Aventador behind like it was sittin still.

Top Gear can attest to "real sports cars" not quite being the quickest rides on the block as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_c1H60zlW0

I WANT MY 1080(s)!!!!!!!!!!!
