I posted this in the GTX 1080 review thread, but since these are the cards that everyone actually cares about I figured they deserve their own thread.

EVGA GTX 1080 SC and FTW (with dual 8-pin power): http://videocardz.com/60333/evga-geforce-gtx-1080-acx-3-0-superclocked-and-ftw-pictured

lots of EVGA SC pics (looks like an NVIDIA reference PCB with an ACX 3.0 cooler): http://hothardware.com/news/evga-ge...ed-avx-30-edition-and-gtx-1080-sli-sneak-peek

Asus GTX 1080 ROG Strix: http://videocardz.com/60340/asus-rog-strix-geforce-gtx-1080-pictured

Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! cards (apparently both with dual 8-pin power): http://videocardz.com/60325/zotac-geforce-gtx-1080-amp-and-amp-extreme-pictured

Post any links or pics if you got em!

Thanks! Would any posters here know whether or not evga uses premium waterblocks for their hydrocopper series? If not I will need to find a good pcb version of the card that I'll use with an evga or heatkiller block etc...

Guys, what's your advice: should I buy GTX 1080 Founders Edition, or wait for the custom builds to show up? From what I read the custom editions may not be really a lot cheaper after all.

Even if the custom cards are $649-699, there will be Zotac, EVGA and Asus Strix cards way better. Reference FE 1080 drops clocks to 1620mhz in Crysis 3 per JaysTwoCents but Asus Strix has 1936mhz boost.

Don't waste your $ on the $699 FE if you can wait. Asus Strix will run cooler, quieter, overclock better and have 0 dBA operation of fans at light gaming/2D desktop. No fan operating at light gaming/2D workloads feature alone is worth buying AIB cards over the FE.

Stay away from everything with 1x8-pin connector.

Galaxy HUF - This is a real premium product, not that shitty reference cut-down PCB

MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X RGB

BTW, EVGA cards GTX 1080 SC and FTW uses the same reference cut-down PCB as FE.

ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1080 supposedly launched today but I wonder where is it actually available at? Or paper launch I wonder.

2 8-pin power delivery instead of single 8-pin in FE edition also look at the right side tube/fitting it seems that it can be added to existing loop.

MSI has already announced their seahawk model..

NVIDIA was basically promoting the work they did to the power delivery system of the 1080 Founders edition.

Will these non-reference PCB's have equal / better power delivery? Or will we have coil-whine issues and etc?

Those cards you linked look awesome. I predict the HOF series will cost a lot more than $699 though.

FTW EVGA isn't like the reference card.

2x 8-pin and 10+2 VRMs. The EVGA cards to skip are FE, ACX 3.0 and SC.

Coil whine has little to do with the actual quality of the chokes.

Server Level
Chokes by Cooper Bussmann
GIGABYTE X99 series motherboards feature Server Level Cooper Bussmann Chokes.
• Server level reliability
• High current capacity

• New design reduces heat created by power loss and provides efficient power delivery to CPU VRM area.

These coil-whine but are rock solid.
http://www.gigabyte.com/MicroSite/372/images/performance.html

It's still too hard to say if the 5+1 VRM is limiting overclocks or the 8-pin single connector is.

Either way, a 2000mhz 1080 is at 220W already:
https://www.overclockers.ru/lab/762...ie-videokarty-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080.html#14

That means the 8-pin connector is likely the issue for sure. Since the best AIB cards will have more than a single 8-pin connector, you don't need to worry too much about the reference chokes. MSI Gaming, Asus Strix, Zotac AMP!, EVGA FTW, Classified, etc. will all be superior to the FE card. Since the FE card actually costs $699, it makes no sense to buy it unless you MUST have the looks of it.

FE is a looking like the weakest 1080 right now. single 9-pin with blower fan..
honestly no body can say if there will be any coil whine issues as almost all the companies have redesigned their cooler shrouds.

That's the thing, I don't care about overclocking in general but looking at the most reliable card. I am not sure if these aftermarket PCB's have the same level of testing that NVIDIA's reference PCB's have undergone.

Then again, i'm probably in the wrong thread as the title of this post says "custom" cards - lol

The reliability difference between PCBs is going to be so vanishingly small its a waste of time to even think about it. If you care about reliability buy the card with the best fans (since fans are by far and away the most common failure on graphics cards) and the longest warranty. Dont forget to consider whether the vendor has a history of honoring warranties. Evga is known for honoring them and I've never had ASUS honor a warranty. The Flounders Edition card is a total waste.

if u dont OC then you should completely avoid FE and get a custom card factory OCed. their OC is well tested and stable.

I never understood why AIB partners released reference (in this case FE) cards. How do they differentiate it from one AIB reference card from the next? Whats the point, are their margins in reference cards? Why doesn't nvidia jsut sell reference cards?

They all look the same, just a different brand logo on the cooler. I never understood the point of it?

I get custom cards by AIBs, but why do they do reference? seems like a waste of their time

Is that how the base model nonFE reference cards are going to look from everyone? I think that mesh part lights up like in the evga ones. What is the usual price difference between custom and nonFE reference cards? Not too shabby.

i could only see a price on this one(its a press release so price is kinda sure)
$649
rest are still mum on the pricing.
