Yeah, ATi's performance in Fallout 3 is phenomenal, you can't go wrong with either, with the GTX 260+ or the HD 4870, specially now that the prices are going down quickly. I paid $289.00 after a $20.00 rebate for my card 3 months ago, and now it cost only $214.99 after MIR. There's other brands that might be cheaper, and even some GTX 260+ under the $200.00 mark.

I believe the R5xx was superior to the G7x, even with the latter using HQ + LOD clamp.

I agree with BFG on this one.
The R5xx was in fact superior to the G7x.

The G7x were decent chips but on the other hand, I think there were a bit "over-marketed"....or too hyped if you will.

OP, can you let these members know what made you decide? Did you flip a coin, or are there some reasons for your choice? The reason I'm asking you for this, is that everyone is different. Some things that are not so important to some, might be important to others and vice versa. I think they need to see that. IMHO. Was it price? Features? Performance in games you play? etc. etc.

Thanks

I'll chip in here.

I decided on a 260. Mainly because I prefer Nvidia drivers.

Running an older x1800xt on the newest ATi drivers right now and still have a host of issues like getting the right resolutions displayed and having VLC always full screen on the monitor I dont want. Never had these problems with my 8800gt. Also, the ability to select which settings to use on certain games is a plus.

Also, I have never had a bad experience with eVGA, and have confidence in their warranty service.

Tie in the fact that I have been waiting for a sub $200 price, and I finally purchased a eVGA GTX 260.

It was still the same back then as NVIDIA has better AA with TrAA and better AF

Hey guys, I just wanted to chime in here again. I have a BFG gtx280 oc2 and a vanilla Visiontek hd4870 512. Honestly there isn't too much difference in the cards performance. Each one has it's spot in the winner's corner. The only times the 280 is in a different league is when I hit a frame buffer limitation on the 512 4870. When that happens, knocking down AA will solve the problem.

Obviously the 280 is the higher performing card but you can hardly tell most of the time.

Judging by the monitor in your sig you are limiting the 280 at 1680 x 1050.

I run dualies. it clearly says that I also have a 2407wfp and a 2005fpw. 1920x1200.

ATi's AF implementation was almost angle independent, nVidia's AF implementation before the GeForce 8 was a pile of crap with their shimmering and texture blurring in certain angles, in that review they didn't even turned on the High Quality AF option in the ATi drivers, nVidia had always better transparency Anti Aliasing, but ATi had the edge with 6x in normal scenarios (Except with Transparencies) thanks to it's gamma corrected FSAA which never was turned on (Another undelivered promise) with the GeForce 7.

FWIW, since the OP has made a choice and got on with his life, I can attest that in moving from my 9800 pro to my 6600GT (RMA after supplier stopped stocking 9800 pros) the texture crawl/shimmering with nvidia's hardware/software at that stage was painfully apparent, even when you'd clamped things and used HQ (which had a nasty performance hit, something the reviewers never seemed to tell you).

My 4850's crawling/shimmering seems very similar to that of my last card, my beloved 6800GS (which clocked like a god, well past Ultra, but I digress ), so I assume it's not a patch on my 9800 pro, but it's so long ago that I can't honestly compare
