GTX 275 worth the extra $100 over the 260?

After putting it off for too long, I am finally upgrading my old system (Athlon 3500+, X800 Video, 1gig ram)

I am kind of torn between the EVGA's GTX 260 ($159 AR) and GTX 275 ($249) the 260 also comes with COD:WAW, which is a nice extra.

I don't mind spending the money, if it's really worth it, but looking at all the benchmarks, there only seems to be a 5 fps difference between the two.

I am gaming on a 24" inch monitor at 1920x1080.

Rest of upgrade Specs
BIOSTAR TFORCE TA790GX (As of now)
AMD Phenom II X4 940
4 GIG PC2 8500
ANTEC 900

Thanks

At $249 that gtx275 is way overpriced, and it's definitely not worth $100 over a gtx260. A more reasonable price for the gtx275 would be closer to $200.

Right now I have a 4770 for a 1680x1050 monitor and couldn't be happier with the performance. The 4770 was a massive jump up from my old x800 GTO.

Since your 1920x1200 monitor has 30% more pixels than my 1680x1050 why not look into a 4890? <----This GPU would seem nicely matched to your higher resolution because it has ~ 40% more computational power than a 4770.

EDIT: At the moment 4890s on sale can be had for under $200 and have done better than 275 GTX in several reviews.

That is a much better value. The GTX 275 needs to be closer to 200. The 4890 will hit that price shortly here and if Nvidia was wise the 275 would drop around the same time.

Really, a 4890 for $200 AR is a much better deal than a GTX 275 for $250- which the 4890 is generally faster than. So the question becomes, save money on a cheaper GTX 260 or get a 4890 and judging by the numbers in the reviews the differnce is measurable to about a minimum of 10fps in every game, and sometimes much more- this is a noticable difference and IMO justifies the extra $$ youd pay.

It's not generally faster, they're about the same in performance. But I agree that for that price, 4890 is a much better value then gtx 275.

Not worth it.

Get a GTX260 for ~160 or a 4890 for ~190; both are better deals.

i was in a similar situation a couple weeks ago....

i was debating the 4890 or the 4870, i finally went with the 4870 and it performs way beyond what i thought it would. I am really happy overall that i was able to save a $50-60 by getting the 4870.

i think ur in the same situation but instead of dealing with ATI, its Nvidia. IMO if you have the extra cash to throw around, buy the 275, if not get the 260.

How typical. The OP asks about 275 v 260, and the squad comes out

Go with a nice 260 and dont look back. I wouldnt pay $100 extra for a 275.

What they said. Buy a 4890 at that resolution. 260 if you wanna spend less. My 4890 is amazing: highly recommend.

Yeah cause we all know the 4890 at $200'ish is a terrible deal right and people are recommending it just to show bias against nVidia. :disgust:

If one was impartial, one recommends what they feel is the best. The same people recommending a 4890 (cheaper and similar performing to the GTX 275) are the same ones also saying either get the 4890 or go with the GTX 260 because they're good deals at the moment.

Heck, I've asked questions on Product A & Product B before and gotten completely different product suggestions because others brought up points I hadn't considered and suited my needs better. Isn't that what an open discussion is about?

I thought all the suggestions were hardware agnostic and merely trying to help the OP get the best bang for the buck. Which the OP is concerned about or he wouldn't be asking which of his two choices were better for the money.

I also agree with what the others are saying. The GTX 260 at $160'ish or the Radeon 4890 at 200'ish. The GTX 275 is most definitely not worth $50 more than the Radeon 4890. If you can get the GTX 275 for $200'ish then definitely go with that instead.

GTX 260 or 4870/4890. seriously, the performance from those cards at their price points are just amazing. either card you choose will be awesome.

Oh wow, someone recommended a card that isn't from nvidia, make sure you don't cry about it... oh wait.

Honestly, mods need to pay attention to this - if people are so company-biased that they insist on giving poor information (or excluding options), it's going to damage the reputation of the community.
