Look into the Gigabyte 1GB version, dual fan setup, sits about 68c with a core overclock to 800. You cannot hear the fans at 100%, I know how loud my 4870 was, this doesn't even compare.

Yea, I have that Gigabyte GTX460OC 1 GB model aswell, with the two fans.
Upgraded from a Radeon 5770. I can't believe how silent my system has become. The 5770 had a nasty whine in the fan (I have the original reference shroud cooler one, from Sapphire).

my 4890 isn't loud... its just that my motherboards orientation of the sata ports aren't good because any large VC will render my sata slots useless...

Ahh, sorry. Then yes, if you manage to sell your HD4890, GTX460 768MB is the closest card in performance to get to meet your requirement. It's 6cm shorter, so it shouldn't block the SATA ports (had a look at your mobo - that's a really poor design tbh...). Though you can perhaps grab a HD5770? Should still be plenty for 1440x900.

If you manage to sell the HD4890 for a decent price and get a GTX460 768MB, it shouldn't cost you too much. If you get a HD5770, you can maybe get a few bucks back. Just make sure 6cm less is enough to not block the 2-3 SATA ports (both the GTX460 and HD5770 are 6cm shorter than a HD4890).

I had the same issue, so I bought sata cables that have the L shape in both ends and is less than a half inch long between the connector and cable which will fit nicely between the motherboard and your videocard's cooler.

If you want to make your HD4890 quieter, grab an Accelero plus a Nexus or Noctua 120mm fan together with it and you're set. That will run you like $30 plus 30 minutes of work. Read a few guides too.

Thanks for the advice on the Accelero I am going to give it a try with my 4890.

the problem is I don't like Inno3d brands LOL! the only GTX 460 768 version here is the Inno3d and the palit sonic edition which has no VRM heatsink so its a no no for me because I love overclocking GPUs...

my motherboard is a crap and I am so pissed because of the sata orientations, at first I just neglected it, thinking that it will be just fine to be that way but when I got a GTX 260 back then it was like sh*t on the sata ports and cables got bent...

my concern is that the MSI GTX 460 cyclone also has no VRM heatsink, so will it be ok to overclock it? lets say up to 800 - 850mhz from 725mhz without having problems with the VRM temps? room temperatures here at noon reaches up to 36c to 37c...

I have an Intel SSD and my system just doesnt make noise. It is kinda creepy actually, silent beast.

in my case, i don't know if its a coil noise because i can't hear anything on my reference 4890... if its spinning up i just hear a louder sound of the fans due to increasing RPMs...

give me a heads up when you got your bang bang card XD

consider this your heads up, card is installed and OCing has begun, with a platform upgrade to i7 as well. 460 OCing thread started here to see my results

ambients dont seem to be a problem, VRM's have no issues, see my OCing thread i posted above, i have 30-35C ambient and was able to achieve a great OC. I did lap the cyclone and the heatspreader to 2000grit and used AS 5 though which im sure helped.

Don't forget that VRMs run extremely hot on the 4870/4890 series. So you will definately need to cool them with something like this:

http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=97201

So once you factor in $30+ in aftermarket cooling required for the 4890, might as well sell it and get a better card. That's what I did with my 4890.
