I think its a bad idea.

4890 @ 950 to a factory overclocked gtx 460 is only like 15 percent faster.
Even a highly clocked gtx 460 would not be all that much faster.40 percent mabe?

If you can get 150$ for the 4890, I'd go for it.

Bad idea IMO. The performance upgrade would be hardly anything to mention. I'd sit on that HD4890 and wait for next generation cards to show up. Especially on your 19" LCD (that's 1600x1200 if I'm not mistaken).

of course its a bad idea..... However i just did that exact thing, went from a OC'ed 4890 to a 460 Cyclone 1GB. When i pick it up next week ill let you know if it was worth it.

oh? please let me know how your GTX performs so I could gauge myself where to stand..

because I can't get a larger card due to my sata ports becoming useless, so I want to replace something that is much more powerful than my 4890 that is large enough to not rendering my sata ports useless...

right now I could only use 3 ports because the 4890 is quite large...

well I am researching gtx460 to get out of my 4890 card and the appeal for me is the big difference in noise. I may even just go for a 768mb 460 to get the noise levels as low as possible - and it will still be an upgrade from the 4890, which is just too noisy for me.

If you check out the performance summaries here: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GTX_460_1_GB/31.html , you'll see that the 4890 is on average 9% slower across all resolutions tested, and inches closer to the GTX 460 1GB the higher the resolution. At 2560x1600, for example, it's only 5% slower. That said, it would not be worth it at all to switch for only a ~5-10% performance gain (even considering overclocking capabilities, that's only going to rise to 15-20% at most).

yeah i will let you know for sure, i plan on posting a 4890 to 460 thread since there seem to be alot of people on the fence about upgrading to a 460 from either a 4870 or 4890 so i will make sure to post about it.

My reasons for the upgrade/sidegrade are mostly because the coil whine on my 4890 is driving me insane.

in my case, i don't know if its a coil noise because i can't hear anything on my reference 4890... if its spinning up i just hear a louder sound of the fans due to increasing RPMs...

give me a heads up when you got your bang bang card XD

It's a bad idea, better of with a faster card like the HD 5870 or GTX 470 and yet, none of them will provide you with twice the performance.

thanks for the replies...

another question, I noticed that the GTX 460 cyclone has no VRM heatsink... its that safe when overclocking?

He has a 1440x900 LCD people... That's less pixels than 1280x1024 for those wondering how taxing this resolution is. A GTX470? HD5870? Seriously? D:

If you want to make your HD4890 quieter, grab an Accelero plus a Nexus or Noctua 120mm fan together with it and you're set. That will run you like $30 plus 30 minutes of work. Read a few guides too.

Beats a $200-$230 expense with hardly any performance difference...

my 4890 isn't loud... its just that my motherboards orientation of the sata ports aren't good because any large VC will render my sata slots useless...

I just upgraded from a 4870 to a GTX 460, and while I don't see a huge difference in the games I play(MW2, DA:O, COH), it is cool and absolutely silent. Overclocking can get you close to 5850 levels, would a 5850 not be an upgrade over a 4890? I think so, as long as you can sell your card and get some money back it won't kill your wallet.

Look into the Gigabyte 1GB version, dual fan setup, sits about 68c with a core overclock to 800. You cannot hear the fans at 100%, I know how loud my 4870 was, this doesn't even compare.
