that page you linked shows a 15% improvement at 1920x1200.

Well look at all the pages @ 1900x1080 and use the 675 core Zotac 1gb reference card vs the 1gb Palit card @ 800 core and figure out the % of overclock, then look at the avg performance gained in all games for the Palit card.

Chances are you will get a 20% overclock per 18% performance gained avg.

Are you being sarcastic?

If not, its 18.5% overclock. Stock is 675Mhz.

to lazy to do the math..
I edited my post.

Edit I was close.
I said generally you will have a 20% overclock that gives you a 18% game increase.

SO 18.5% vs 15%.... close enough

What makes you think overclocking a GPU will hurt it's lifespan more than overclocking a CPU?

Unless you've got a high end GPU, overclocking your CPU has significantly diminished returns in most of today's games. You'll find better performance improvements - for games - by overclocking your GPU.

CPU affects alot more than gaming. Boot times, video encoding, gaming, etc. I game maybe 20% of the time I'm on the computer. So a CPU overclock has much more benefit for me.

thats a ridiculous bunch of excuses. if you are not adding voltage then overclocking the card a bit is not going to hurt it or reduce its realistic lifespan. hell I have a 6600 from 2004 with a 33% oc that works fine. my gtx260 has been been overclocked for well over a year and half. and overclocking my gtx260 has helped make games more playable or allowed me to raise settings that would not have been possible at stock speeds. also with most cards the power consumption and temp difference is marginal. I see only 1-2 C difference and about 15 watts difference under full load compared to my gtx260 at stock settings.

btw its hilarious that you apply those excuses to not overclocking your gpu yet have no problem overclocking your cpu.

Well how much is fan speed increasing with the overclocks? It's gets annoying hearing a video card fan whirring while you game. I'm gaming on a 1080p LCD. I'm currently playing bioshock 2 and Dirt 2. Then I'll play Batman Arkham Asylum after that. I have no reason to oc my 470. Maybe when Crysis 2 comes out but I won't get the desired outcome by oc'ing my card. Oc'ing a gpu can get a few more fps. It doesn't make miracles happen. You're not going from crysis locking up to 40fps with a overclock. Even a few watts or a few degrees is too much for such little gains.

CUDA performance?

Did I miss something? Is the 460 not Cuda compatible/capable?

If it is capable then where are the cuda benches?

my fan speed didnt go up at all and stays at 40% 99% of the time just like it did on stock clocks. my gtx260 is still silent and I have never heard it once unless I manually ramp up the speed which I have never needed to ever do. it can most certainly give a much needed few fps in the very demanding games and 15-20% can make quite a difference in playabilty.

@1920x1200 Stock 1GB vs. Palit Sonic Platinum 1GB

Those are some pretty damn big increases across the board. The Palit Sonic Platinum trades blows with a reference hd5850, and it's $40 cheaper.

so if you have a 5850 going thru rma and want to buy a new card would it be worth it getting the 460?

I think the 460 is a great card for what it is targeted at. Give nv some credit for finally putting out one decent Fermi card

Oh I think the GTX460 is a great card. We were just discussing whether a 5850 is a viable option if ATI dropped its price to $250.

There is no way I am not recommending a GTX460 at this moment!!

hmm might just wait for my card from xfx instead.

actually at 16x10 most games will run just fine on a gtx 460 1 gb, from looking at the reviews today in fact it is very close at that resolution. plus you'll be able to pocket some money while you're at it.

I would much rather have a 5850 over a 460. Out of the 5750, 5770, 5830, 5850, 5870, 5970, 460, 465, 470 & 480, the 460 and 5850 are the two best buys. You can aruge that a 460 overclocks to the same performance as a stock 5850, however, both the 5850 and the 460 are the coolest running highest overclocking cards of this generation.

The 460's strong point is its value. At $210 it has a better price/performance ratio than the 5850 now that the 5850's price has risen from $259 to $300.

The gtx460 is a great overclocker, but the 5850 overclocks to the moon as well and with a 1000mhz OC can reach a stock GTX480 - something that could definitely not be done by a 460.

However, for the money (even with slightly less performance) the 460 is the clear winner over the 5850. Pricing is what makes this GF104 card a winner.

Great card, highly successful launch IMO. Very atractive SLI performance and oc's like crazy too, what's not to like???

Well done Nvidia, it's another 8800 GT

I would pick the 5850 over the 460 also, but like you said, when pricing comes into play, the 460 wins. If the 5850 was lowered to $249~259, it would still be very attractive (assuming the Nvidia card didn't drop lower).

I don't really like the power consumption though. It looks good compared the hogs 470/480 and even compared to the 5830 which is not as efficient as the 5850.

Welcome to the world of not having enough time to do a proper review.
This was raised in the comments of the AT review, so I will put the graphs here that Ryan linked (page 4 of the comments)
You hit the nail on the head with your comment on time. I actually have the data, but with the limited amount of time I had I wasn't able to write the analysis (most of my time was spent on better covering the architecture). That will be amended to the article later today, but for now you can see the raw graphs.

There is no discussion to go with them (yet).

Anywhere a review about the Gainward GTX460 GLH?

It's an overclocked version with custom cooler. Mainly care about heat and noise.
(only available 460 at "my shop"). about 90$ less than a 5850.

I've read quite a few of the GeForce GTX 460 reviews and one video card which stands out to me is the MSI GeForce GTX 460 Cyclone. That video card is one which I would seriously consider for my next upgrade. Well done Nvidia the GeForce GTX 460 is excellent!
