1) It seems oddly close to the GTX465 in the Tessellation tests, considering it's down 30% in the tessellator count (polymorph engine count * clockspeed).

2) It seems oddly bandwidth limited (192 vs 256bit cards). IIRC the higher end cards didn't gain much from increased memory bandwidth, but it looks like these do? (Even in the tessellation benchmarks...).
1GB might be much more worth it than the 768 just for that.

Not enough of an improvement to get me to replace the 4890. The performance difference is not compelling, considering I got the 4890 for $200.

Looks like I'll be waiting for Southern Islands or further along for my upgrade.

Great performance for the price if this is true. It's like a low power GTX 285 for $199, sweet. Really though, it looks like this could drive 5830 prices down to ~$175, and maybe bring down the 5850 too, that'd be nice.

Probably not anytime soon. I couldn't find a 5850 in stock at fry's or compusa. I wanted a card right now so I got a evga gtx 470 sc from compusa. 349 with a $20 rebate. Not a killer deal but I had a place to take it back If it didn't work. I've had a string of bad luck with cards. Got a used msi 470 from amazon when it was supposed to be new, got a doa 5870 from the egg. Well anyways found plenty of 470's and 480's on the shelves no 5850's or 5870's. Also look at the egg or amazon can't even get a reference 5850 or 5870 at the jacked up prices they are going for. I seriously doubt they'll be dropping prices when they can't keep stock at the current prices.

The exact opposite in Canada. I'm in Southern Ontario and I can't find any nV cards on the shelves aside from the odd 260. ATi seems to completely dominate retail in my area.

Really tempted to order the 1GB...it's either this or a used GTX 280, although I'm guessing either should be a pretty nice improvement over the 8800GTS I'm rocking. :hmm:

Awesome, our local shop is getting these tomorrow. This might be my next card.

The 1GB version that is, the 768mb seems like it could run out of memory at some settings.

Can't wait to see some larger reviews to back up that review. Performance looks good though and much better thermals.

I take it this is the way to go if you're building a new system and don't want to shell out the cash for a 470 or 480? This is within my price range and I don't want to buy an ATI card, at least not this time around. If this delivers good overall performance with any game I'll be happy to order one of these.

I am hoping we see the Anandtech review tonight at midnight.

So far at this time I can't imagine hd5830 prices not tumbling as a result of 460 GTX being released.

Architecture Changes and Specifications

3 Major changes in the GF104 (GTX460) compared to GF100 (GTX465/470/480):

#1) NVIDIA increased the number of CUDA cores inside each Streaming Multiprocessor (SM). While the GF100 chip used in the GTX 480/470/465 has 32 CUDA cores per SM, the GF104 has 48, a 50% increase.

#2) Doubled the number of dispatch units from 2 in GF100, to 4 in GF104. As a result, two instructions can be dispatched per warp, for a grand total of four instructions per clock per SM.

#3) The number of special function units (SFUs) and texture units were doubled from 4 in GF100 to 8 in GF104.

1GB version vs. 768MB version

- 512 KB of L2 cache vs. 384 KB
- 256-bit memory interface (28.8 GB/sec more bandwidth) vs. 192-bit
- 8 more ROPs (32 vs. 24)
- 160W TDP vs. 150W
- both cards are 8.25 inches in length vs. 10.5 inches for GTX480 and 5830

The 256-bit memory bus means more bandwidth can be extracted from overclocking .

Power Consumption and Overclocking

Very impressive power consumption numbers and overclocking (esp. once you consider how much slower 5770 is compared to the GTX460 1GB): http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_gtx_460_performance_preview/page20.asp

Total System Power Draw (Idle)
460 768mb = 162W
460 1GB = 166W
5770 1GB = 172W
5830 = 217W

Total System Power Draw (Load)
5770 = 288W
460 768mb = 306W
460 1GB = 307W
5830 = 331W
GTX 275 = 386W

1GB version = 840 gpu / 1090 mem overclock. GPU only reached 70*C!

Performance

The GTX 460 1GB comes out on top of the Radeon 5830 in every single game tested.

At 1920x1200, the 460 is faster than the 5830 as follows:

- 25% faster in STALKER
- 16% faster in RE5
- 12% faster in Metro 2033
- 28% faster in DiRT 2
- 15% faster in Crysis

GTX 460 looks like a real winner. Gonna return my 5850 for it. Only real question is 1GB or 768MB model

Hardwarecanucks link is dead...

Fixed.

Yeah this is more what NVIDIA should be doing in the first place - Gaming performance for games! I don't need that GPGPU crap - I need cheap cards that play my games great.

This one seems to have accomplished that.

Now expecting how AMD reacts.

Anyway - we have a decent mainstream market again!

I wouldn't buy Palit. Ugly cards and 1 year warranty. I'm sure they work well enough though.

They have 8 cards to review and the 800 core Palit gtx 460 1gb.

Wow this card is truly a slam dunk. Every single GTX460 did 800mhz with ease. Also at 800mhz, it comes pretty damn close to 5850's performance!

MSI Cyclone did 927mhz (from stock of 675) or +37% overclock on air!

2 reference clocked GeForce GTX 460 in SLI costing 400 USD will quite easily beat a more expensive GeForce GTX 480 in performance.

is Palit a decent brand? I think I might just hold off for a EVGA or XFX 1gb model on newegg

I would go with 1GB version unless you only play at lower resolutions.

Anyway, you returning to save money or ?

Performance wise the 5850 is faster.

All the cards on most of the sites Ive read are overclocking over 800 core at stock voltages. The MSI card had overvoltage controll and got 900 core.
It seems 850 core+ = a 5850.

I'd just wait a bit till the dust settles and the prices drop.
