Yeah, in Crysis Warhead. In the other games shown, the 5870's in CF are over 30% faster at stock speeds when compared to the heavily overclocked GTX 460 SLI.

Yes you are correct..but its still much faster then a 4870x2.
In fact I think with the latest drivers the 5870 might be close now.

I need something for my LAN rig, which chugs with a 4670. Is a 5770 or GTX 460 the better option? 1920 res. Heat and power is an issue in the LAN rig, which has a smaller case and weaker PSU.

The GTX460 and HD5850 use about the same amount of power.
The HD5770 will use significantly less, so it depends on how much of a real issue the power/heat thing is.

If it's a serious issue to the point where you could be marginal for a GTX460 (e.g. 300w PSU or less) then it's a no-brainer to get the HD5770.
If it's a 350w it could be tight (depending on the quality of PSU). 400w should be fine with the GTX460 on the power front.

HD5770 will use 35~50w less than the GTX460.
( http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/gtx460_071110174503/23737.png - you don't really want to be running 100% of your PSU rated load. While a good 300w should run a GTX460 without any issues, having some margin is always nice)

Thanks happy, Skurge, bryanW...I realize I won't get a massive performance boost from a 4870x2, but between DX11, a bit lower power draw at idle, and how frustrating Folding at Home has been with my current card, it did seem like a significant boost for not too much of an investment.

Will ponder a bit, but cool to know the power supply is good to go either way. Thanks again guys.

the Gigabyte with 2 fans or the MSI Cyclone with Voltage control. The 1GB EVGA version is loud due to having an exhaust fan.

check out the dc forums, lots of folders there are working on data for gtx 460 in folding.

does the gigabyte have voltage control?

The gigabyte 1gb gtx 460 does support over voltage through MSI afterburner software. Any gtx 460 with the NCP 5388/ or 5395T voltage regulating chip will support software over voltage. This is the same chip used in the gtx 480 and gtx 470. This chip is also used on the MSI, Asus, Palit and Gainward versions of the GTX460.

1.087 volts is likely the max voltage.

Dedicated heatsink, under the main heatsink:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageG...20Video%20Card (check image #3, after looking at the above review gallery)

If a VRM heatsink is a tie-breaker for you, the Gigabyte looks like the one. It's also $5 cheaper, in stock at Newegg (ETA 7/27 on the MSI), and has an adapter for the mini-HDMI (the MSI appears to have a DVI->HDMI adapter, which I hope I'm mistaken about, as that has got to be the most useless kind of adapter they could have included).

P.S. a few reviews have said it's a DVI<->HDMI. I would think an adapter for mini-HDMI<->HDMI, mini-HDMI<->DVI, or including a mini-HDMI<->HDMI cable, would have been more handy to go with, accessory-wise.

Its kind of a shame that the 5870s and 5850s are still overpriced right now. They need a good $100 knocked off of both of them.

I think we were all spoiled by the $200 and $300 cost of the 4850 and 4870s back in the day.

I'm still using a 4850 - it's probably the best video card purchase I've made.. Soon after launch, the card dropped to from $200 to $160 while still playing virtually every game from 2008 and 2009, and most from 2010 at great frame rates. Totally unlike the 5850/70 launch, which had prices going *up* as time went by, until the cards made no sense at all.

Until the GTX 460, all of the DX11 cards have been disappointments, IMO. The high-end cards ere too expensive and use too much power. The mid-range cards barely beat mid-range cards from the previous generation, while still using much more power and costing more. The only thing that impressed me was how quickly ATI got low-end DX11 cards out the door, but of course those are too slow to actually make use any of the new features.

The GTX 460 is the first one that isn't a total disappointment to me. It's the first DX11 card I would even consider upgrading to. It could have been faster (GTX-280 class performance was cool in 2008, but that was two years ago), but it's almost the new 8800GT or Radeon 4850.

8800gt: 90% of top end performance, 50% of top end price.
gtx 460: 50% of top end performance, 30% of top end price.

yeah, they're quite similar.

It's actually more like 66% of the GTX480, and many models are shipping with pretty healthy factory overclocks, further narrowing the gap.

I wonder if the next high-end card will be based off GF104 instead - clearly the GF100 had a lot of extra luggage that most people that only bought it for games didn't use or need. Also it seems that GPU was somewhat unbalanced, being too narrow, with too much emphasis on tessellation and too little on texturing. The 460 isn't that far behind the 470 even in Unigine Heaven, despite having only half as many Polymorph engines, and it's still far above even the 5870:

I mean, if the tweaks make sense for the mid-range, they should make as much sense for the high-end?

Nice thanks for the info, i will be picking up the Gigabyte one.
