"Sue of EXPreview fame did a roundup of GTX 465 cards and discovered that quite a few of them are GTX 470 in disguise. By using the recently released ASUS GTX 465 Unlock utility [Direct Download from EXPreview here], Sue was able to unlock around 50% of graphics cards that qualified for the unlock part - fitting nicely into the theory that some parts are deliberately downclocked [demand] and some parts failed the GTX 470 QA [yield]."

http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2010/7/16/unlock-geforce-gtx-465-into-a-gtx-470.aspx

From the review conclusion...

"Undoubtedly the unlockable GTX 465 would be more popular with consumers. We’ve found some unlockable GTX 465 from many manufacturers including Zotac, Galaxy, Unika, Asus and Colorful. "

http://en.expreview.com/2010/07/11/guide-on-how-to-unlock-the-geforce-gtx-465/7865.html/16

The gtx 465 is now $230 AR on newegg. Check to see if yours unlocks!

I think these things are very important before people start buying GTX 465's to unlock:

In another word, there’re two versions of GTX 465 available on the market – one is 10 memory chip version with part of SP and memory controllers disabled, which means it could possibly be unlocked; another one is original 8 memory chip version which is not unlockable.
Among the four 10 memory chip versions we have, only two of them went through all the following benchmarks, so the success rate is 50 percent.
I wouldn't mind free performance gains but this doesn't seem as easy as 50% success rate.

Kind of a misleading thread title, should mention its 50% of only the 10 chip GTX 465s.

Happy you quoted part of the conclusion but omitted the most important part man:

For now only the GeForce GTX 465 with 10 memory chips can be unlocked. The utility that Asus offers is very safe and simple, but it can only unlock the disabled stream processors. If you want to activate the disabled memory and memory controllers as well, you’ll need to flash the BIOS, which is more difficult and risky.

That makes a huge difference bro.

good catch. The pool number doesn't seem large enough to draw any conclusions either.
Should only be thought of as a deal-sweetner more than anything, only if you already want a 465.

Is there a way to tell which version you are getting without opening the box?

flashing a bios isn't "difficult", and "risky" is certainly overstated. I've flashed a gpu bios any number of times with no problems at all, and even if that fails it's not difficult to flash back. you just need to have your strategy in place before you start.

however, "forgetting" to mention that it is only the 10 memory chip units that are possible to unlock is pretty bad. That's the kind of crap that rollo used to throw out there. What's gotten into you?

yeah true, this did gazillion times on my 4830 and had no probs at all. The card eventually died but it wasn't from reflashing

Wait what did you do your 4830?

I have a 4830 right now (temp as my rig is in service due to an accident) that is stock. I can squeeze more juice out of it?

I upped the voltage for a better overclock. Also, flashing the bios allows you to remove the hassle of loading a OC tool ala ATT or afterburner (if that bugs you, that is). This is the main reason for the flashing really, quite trivial tbh.

There were some minor tweaks like correcting the buggy fan profile control which some 48xx cards were affected by.

I remember reading about the fan bug which I'm glad my office PC's 4850 didn't have.

Hmm maybe I'll tinker before putting this build back into storage (its my back up.) My RMA motherboard got here yesterday and will be rebuilding my rig this weekend.

This 4830 is a big performance drop from a 5870, doesn't help that the processor is an E2160 versus my Core i7 930.

Haha. Two weeks of hell I tells yah!

har, you call that hell? When my 4830 gave up the ghost, I was stuck with a 1650x pro for a half year!

I remember reading an article about reviewers bricking a lot of cards through trying a bios flash when these first came out. If memory serves it was something like 20% worked, 60% didn't but could be flashed back, 20% bricks. Has that been solved now?

OC a 460 and call it a day.

Actually 2 460s in SLI is an amazing deal right now! Wish that happened before I bought a 5850....but that is life.

heh, I would probably have bought a GTX 460 1GB and overclocked the living daylight out of it instead of my 5850, had it been available at the time.

Ah well, I suppose the 5850 is still noticeably faster than the 460 at stock, and overclocks comfortably past 5870 performance to at least maintain that lead over an overclocked 460, at least on a quick look at Anand's review figures.

Real good card. Shows that given enough time nVidia could make a decent card this generation. After the 480/470/465 they really need it.

It makes me shake my head though that nVidia can show up 9mos. late to the party with an all around good card and people are wishing that they didn't buy their better performing, lower power consumption, ATI card, that they could have been enjoying for the last 9mos. I just don't see the reason for buyer's remorse in this instance?

I think that's with any kind of vga bricking thru bad flash; if you have a PCI video card you could restore it to normal as long as you have dumped your original bios prior to flashing.

The 10 memory chips version are rebadged 470s in the first place. I don't expect most of these to be those kinds of cards because really why would you put extra memory on the board for no reason.

PNY is where it all started , good choice.
Even if your card only has 8 chips ,it's still possible to unlock the sp's and get a modest 13% boost. Just use the ASUS unlocker. good luck.
