How much power do I need to run two gtx 480s in SLI with an i5-3570k? I also have two hard drives connected.
My current PSU is 630w.

A good quality 850 watts psu would do it.

At the very least, assuming you don't have 8 hdds with 6 fans or something. I would prefer a solid 1000 watts to give some room. And if you wish to do record oc on all 3 components then even a 1000w will be used up fully.

Well my current 630w psu is not enough so do I sell it and get an 850w psu or do I sell both my 480s and my spare 460 to buy a 670?

Here come the graphs . Nobody plays furmark and you cant even produce those kinds of numbers with the driver limitations nVidia/ATI have imposed on furmark since. Anandtech leaves out dated sh t on their bench site. You're looking at 400 to 600 watts from the wall with 2 480's in a typical game, 850 is more than fine and 2 480's would put a 670 to shame performance wise. As long as you don't have issue with the heat or noise and you already have the cards just get a new psu and save your cash for GPU's that actually deliver coming out next year.

Thats extremely false information. I have a 2500K which uses more power and SLI GTX 470 which uses 35 less watts than a GTX 480 per card and I can OC everything to its maximum and over volt it to the limit with 6 HDD's (4 being Vraptors) and still have room left over.

@OP A nice 750w will be great for OCing, and a 650w will be fine for stock/mild OCing. Just make sure to get high quality units.

Sell the 630 and use tha to buy a nice 750w, SLi 480's is better than a 680 i believe so no point in downgrading to a 670. Unless heat/noise scares you, I know my 470's like to get very loud and hot during the summer.

no, YOU are giving some bad advice. just stock gtx480 sli can pull 500 watts or more just for the cards alone. a 650 watt psu is not very sufficient to power 480 sli at all. a 750 watt is not sufficient to power that system overclocked unless you want the psu working extremely hard when gaming. every review out there will recommend an 850 watt psu for a system like that to have plenty of room.

At least GTX 480 SLI will suffice as an extremely good heating source when the Winter comes along

I have a very tiny little computer room. I played Batman: Arkham City earlier this evening, using my GTX 670 SLI setup. I decided to close the door to the room (Window was still open and maybe 15c outside. Summer here). Didn't take long for this little room to get very hot! And this was only using two GTX 670's

If you are out right buying a new PSU to accommodate the 480 SLI, get something with some headroom.

I would get at a minimum a 1000W or 1200W PSU. You can run it on an 850W, but your PSU will be operating near its capacity. That is not good for your PSU's longevity, noise levels of the PSU's fan or your system in general and its future upgrades. The price difference between an 800W and 1000W is minimal, better to get something big now that will be able to attend to something you might run in the future as well. PSU is like your monitor where you can buy something nice and not have a need to upgrade it again.

Get a 1K or 1.2K PSU now and don't worry about PSU issues or operating your PSU near its threshold again in the future.

Just my 2c. I used to run 480 tri-sli and got the PSU I have now for the same reason. Now I think I am probably using a little over a 1/3 of its capacity though

with a i5-3570k, a very high quality 850 watt unit should have plenty of headroom even with some overclocking. only if running some really high clocks and voltage would I worry about anything more than an 850 watt psu for more headroom.

My PSU runs fine with max OC's. My 470's use almost as much power ad the 480's and my CPu uses more, plus all my HDD's. Im not saying 850w is dumb, but 750w is perfectly acceptable and will also OC for him.

Nevermind, just saw that you were using tri-SLI.

Why don't you go out to a local hardware store, if you have one in your area like a Lowes or Home Depot, and purchase yourself a wattage reader. I picked mine up from Lowes for around 20$ Then see what kind of watts your box pulls from the wall while gaming.

Another thing, I would try n keep the power draw range between 50-80% in your case scenario. If you peak it at your PSU's spec range, you might run into problems later on down the road.

What is your budget for a PSU anyways?

Alright so I think I will keep the 480s and do SLI then pick up a PSU somewhere in the 800-1000w range. Thanks for all the advice!

Edit: Budget for PSU is around $150.

didn't read the entire thread... do you have a wattage reader? or can you get one?
