Using the same power as the 460-768 but performing slower. Is this reality?
IMO, very likely. The GTS 450 was the same way: a polished turd, then prices went down $30-50, at which point it looked pretty good.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-625-_-Product
Heh, already at $139,99 with rebate, Im sure they will go down $20 very soon.
They are going to like the gtx moniker, the 1000mhz clock speeds and eventually the price. How come every 5770 is not 100 dollars after rebate ?

The 460 has 75% more SPs in it. The 550ti has to be much cheaper to produce. The cynic in my agrees with the idea that they picked a small core count to cut costs and then checked off a marketing feature list that they could include on the cheap and are seeing how much money they can get out of it. :thumbsdown:Why didn't they just rename the 460 the 550?

I hope I'm wrong. It would be great if they had a 550ti core 256 part coming out right around the corner once they have enough binned parts. Well, I guess it would have to be a salvaged 560ti, so they'd probably call it a gtx 555ti? :hmm:
you mean 450256 isn't possible.
384 shaders in clusters of 48, so they could do 336, 288 (both like 460s) or 240.
A 555 or 560 SE with 336 or 288 is possible, considering that huge gap there will be between the 550 and 560 once the 460s disappear from the market.
The 550 is also based on the 460, which maxes out at 192 shaders, so there's nothing they can do to make it faster except by clockspeeds, and you can't increase them enough.
So that's a separate part entirely, not just a harvest? Makes sense. The 550 is also based on the [450], which maxes out at 192 shaders, so there's nothing they can do to make it faster except by clock speeds, and you can't increase them enough.
So in theory, could NV take a harvested 560ti with 2 SMs disabled (for 288 cores) and match it to a full 256 bit memory bus? Smaller die than a 460 for cheaper manufacturing, but with a high enough clock speed to be competitive.
I know 5770 overclock like mad, Im betting a highly overclocked 5770 is probably a faster card than a 550ti overclocked (because its already at its limits). And the 5770 is like 50% cheaper.
That's true. I guess I'm thinking in terms of usable die that only makes sense if they have a sizable batch of chips that wont fill a full 560ti.Disabling the cores would not decrease the die size.
Well, this round they have what is effectively a $120 part and a $250 part. Unless 460 supply stays strong they have a pretty big gap in their lineup.Alternatively, they could just disable some cores in order to make a new SKU, but that would make very little sense to me...
1) horrible value buy you did.So, I didn't really do my research and purchased this card, it comes in tomorrow. From the early posts I kind of have buyers remorse but I wanted a mid-range DX11 card.
Currently I have a 4890...will I see a performance hit or gain?

2) 4890 trades blows with a 460 768... so yeah a decent performance hit.
You just spent 150$ to go down in performance... oh well.
You ll have Dx11 now though.
I can always return it ^_^
But heck, I don't even play FPS...mainly RPG's and whatnot, got the 4890 from a trade awhile back. Selling it for slightly less than the cost of the card, and all I really want is DX11 for Dragon Age 2.

Whats the rest of your computer look like and what resolution do you play at ?
The 5770 used to get defended , to have evolved to be faster than the 4870 in these forums. And the 550 gtx is faster that the 5770.
So you may have gone sideways in power. You now have a dx11 generation card. You can tell us how DA2 dx11 performs for you. The 550 uses the newest driver, that is purported to work better, I believe.
resolution? coming from a 4890 the lowest card you want is a gtx560 or 6950.Core i5, 8gb ddr3, 640gb wd black
