GTX 570 crashes to blank screen on any Direct X environment

Hi Everyone,

A couple months ago I bought an EVGA Nvidia GTX 570 HD card. Whenever I run a game, the video card crashes and my monitor goes into standby mode (blank screen). I hear sound still, but I can't get back into Windows and need to reset the computer. I RMA'd the card, and the same problem occured. It is possible that I have a 2nd bad card.. but I want to rule out anything else!

Furmark runs OK, despite getting high GPU temperatures approaching 88C after a prolonged run time.

All 3dMark tests will cause the same problem of crashing the video card and monitor going to standby mode with a blank screen. I am unable to get through a 3dMark 11, 3dMark 06, or 3dMark Vantage.

I have looked at the +12v power, and my BIOS is telling me that I am getting 12.258 volts there, and in AIDA64. While running Furmark, the power was maintained to the 12v rails.

I did a clean install of Windows 7 SP1, installed the latest nvidia drivers and 3dMark and the same problem occured.

I am not sure what is going on... here are my system specs.

Motherboard: EVGA P55 FTW
CPU - Intel i7-860
RAM - Mushkin 991770 4x4 gb (stock DDR3-1333 ram CL9 1.5v)
HD - WD Cavier Black 1TB
PSU - OCZ Gamestream 700w

Any help/support would be appreciated. Thanks!

What driver versions have you been using ?

All the recent driver releases from nvidia have been riddled with bugs. Many of them causing crashes and hard-locks.

I downloaded the latest NVIDIA drivers on a fresh Windows 7 install last night. The drivers are 285.62 WHQL (released on October 24th).

I can't even watch 1080p video as I just discovered!

Have you tried a different PCI-e slot? Is that possible on your mobo? It seems very unlikly you picked up 2 bad cards in a row (but obviously not impossible).

I just tried the PCI-E 8x slot, and 3dMark crashed the video card within the first 20 seconds. music is still playing, but screen went blank.

Just a thought but have you tried older drivers? See if it's any different. Maybe underclock the card (if you can) and see if it's unstable due to that? I'm just tossing out random ideas, but I hope you find a fix, I'd hate to have that happen to me.

It is possible they had a batch of cards sneak through QC.

This is more of an occurring issue with the 570 than any other 5xx card, and it was almost always resolved by others with a slight voltage bump, ie, +.05v.

I would try running older drivers from nvidia to see if it helps. Maybe these ones: http://www.geforce.com/Drivers/Results/29657

Also if that doesn't help and the suggestion of a small voltage increase does, I would ask EVGA to RMA your 570HD card with a normal 570 card. That card has a short/custom, non-reference PCB. There may be some compromises made in way of components on the board.

Unless you are space-constrained and need the shorter card, see if they will RMA you a reference 570.

- I did a clean installation of older NVIDIA drivers (275.33) and ran 3DMark 11. It did run for slightly longer before crashing.

-I used the EVGA Precision Utility to underclock the card by 20%. When I did this - I was actually able to make it all the way through 3DMark! Does this mean that my PSU isn't providing enough juice for the card???

So when the card is running at stock clock values, it can't keep up and crashes to a blank screen.

There doesn't seem to be a setting to increase the voltage by .05 volts in the EVGA utility.

I tried the older reference drivers (270.61) and it still didn't fix.

In the EVGA ElEET Tuning Utility, which voltage setting do I need to change? There are options to the GPU Voltage, as well as VCore, VCore BOOST #1 and #2, and a few others but nothing specific for the +12 v rails.. Any ideas?

I think I am going to get them to give me the regular 570 card for the 2nd RMA and HOPE that it solves the problem....

GPU voltage. The vcore and all that is for a motherboard. Ignore that as you probably already adjusted that via BIOS.

It will monitor your voltages but you can't add voltage to the +12v.

Ok I tried that and it didn't solve the problem. (GPU Voltage +0.5v)

I called EVGA - they transfered me to upper level support, he asked his manager, and they won't RMA a different card (ie. a stock 570). So I will try for the 3rd 570 HD....

In the mean time I am going to see about finding a friends computer to test the card on their rig.

Man...that's pretty ridiculous that a stock card using multiple driver revisions won't even stay stable. I wonder if it isn't just the GTX 570 having issues in itself. Like there's a whole slew of cards with various issues out there?

Sucks man...hope you get things sorted out.

Just tried another PSU that I had.... it was a Seasonic 600watt modular PSU. Crashed to blank screen within 5 seconds of running the Demo in 3dMark 11. So potentially ruled out the power supply also..

So really what is left besides a fault video card and a motherboard? I tried two different pci-e slots on my motherboard (one was an 8x the other 16x).

I assume another card you had before worked alright?

OP's friend here. He also has a GTX 275 that does more or less work. (He'll explain the 'less' later... but let's just say that the 275 does play games properly)

RMA the card,if it was the motherboard underclocking the video card wouldn't have made a difference
