GTX 580 not happy....

I've only had this card for a couple of months...and to be honest I'm not happy with it. Crysis has its slowdowns on all max at 1920x1080, and other games get eaten away by it. Is it just me, or did I expect a helluva lot more for 500 bones. Now ill end up selling a card that did not satisfy me for a couple hundred less, and end up having to fork over the difference for a 28nm radeon.

Crysis 2? DX11 or no?

That is the best single GPU possible for that, and that resolution isnt exactly monster.

If you want to run the few really intensive games maxed out, you need to be using two cards or more. But for the most part that card will run everything else maxed just fine.

Think of any of the STALKER titles, Crysis/Warhead, Crysis 2, Metro 2033 and ARMA games. Those are off the top of my head the games that will not run maxed out on a single card. Heck, Stalker - Clear Sky is so poorly optimized I still cannot max it out comfortably.

If you want a card that can max out your resolution, get a 6990. If you want to use two cards, get another 580.

Would the 1.5gb limit me in crossfire? Also would running them in 8x/8x limit me? I dont think my motherboard supports 16x/16x. First slot runs in the 16x the other runs in 8x. The 6990 is far to expensive for my taste, I know for a fact I can get another 580 for about $380, but would it be worth it to get it now, or should I not wait till the 28nm chips roll out.

Well two 580s will be more powerful than any single card being released this fall....

This gen doesn't have a single GPU card that can run DX11 + AA/AF on AAA titles if your goal is a minimum 30 fps.

The main reason is it's more or less just a refresh on the same manufacturing process. Really need to wait until the 28nm parts start trickling in.

The amount of power you get over current value lineups is nowhere near the premium, never spend $500 on a single GPU card.

F&*^ if I'll EVER buy into crossf@ck again. My 5970 was the worst POS I've ever invested in...I'll spend 500 bones for a single GPU solution any day.

I went from 5970 quadfire to gtx 580 sli and the 580 sli absolutely rocks way better than than 5790 quadfire setup...either somthing is wrong is with your setup or your need to buy another 580.

Push it. One of mine is a bad clocker, and only hits 930 stable. The other is only a totally average clocker, and only hits 960 stable on the core. Both are sitting at 2100 for mem at at 1.15v.

I run SLI at 930, but I consider both of these cards to be either below average or decidedly average clockers. A good clocking 580 hits 980 ~ 1GHz on the core benchable.

What are the expected gains from 28nm over a 580 in the high end market.

They could double the number of transistors while having the same sized die. So Both AMD and Nvidia could virtualy double the performace of their single GPU flagships. I expect performance beyond 6990/590 levels without the dual GPU headaches.

Thats just my prediction. AMD says Q1 2012 for their next gen GPUs, some people say Q4 2011.

To OP: What kind of framerates are you getting or expecting? At 1920 by 1200 with everything maxed I get 70 on Dirt3, 55 to 60 on Witcher 2, v-sync, 60 on Batman, max PhysX and v-sync, Crysis 2 DX11 and v-sync, 45 to 60, 90 minimum on BFBC2. The only game that really tanks framerate wise is Metro and that's in the forties and playable.

If you are not happy with the fastest single GPU available then you have to go Multi GPU. You need to pay large if you really need top of the line performance in all games.

I'm also wondering this. I do have my 580 overclocked to 902mhz so that does make some difference but I get playable fps in every game I've played yet including metro. I'm getting 80+ fps (which is 40fps while playing in 3D) in metro in dx10 with AA turned to lower setting. In dx11 I know I was getting very playable fps in 2D but not quite enough for 3D.

With his sig I would think he has something else set up wrong, Along with not mentioning which Crysis, Crysis 1 though good gfx has horible programming and lead users in all dirrections to possible causes.
OS makes a difference, Vista with two dozen windows minimized in the background makes a big difference.

Expectations just to high, More info please.

How does his sig make you think there's something else wrong? Just looks like a real nice, current gaming rig. I'd be surprised if the OP's running Vista. The system's too new.

As far as not being happy goes, I don't think the performance is less than advertised for it. People need to understand that there are some IQ features/settings that will make any card(s) puke. As the professional market adapts GPU more into it's workflow, this will improve. Not for a while yet, unfortunately.

?, eh!, he is saying that with the system he has he should be getting great FPS at 1080 and therefore there maybe a setup issue with his system!
