GTX 580 Soft Launched ? - Out of Stock at all Major E-tailors...

I don't think you get it, and this is why it's funny when I am called "new" around here.

History lesson: When the 68XX series was selling out, and that employee from Fry's (faxon) stated that the cards were flying off the shelves at his store (it was in a Tweakboy thread on 68XX being out of stock at his local Fry's), the Nvidia team surged to the forums to squash the notion that the cards were selling well by scouring the net looking for links speculating about production issues and so on.

So, when AMD cards can't be found on shelves there had to have been (according to the Nvidia team) a lack of supply, and it wasn't seen as a positive result that many of the cards produced were selling. In fact some sites wrote click-generating pieces saying that since AMD wasn't saturating demand that they were "suffering", and those of you with memories like mine will recall the links being produced on this forum. I've posted what I've typed so far without even looking up the relevant threads. That's how well I remember the scenario.

Now that the GTX580 is tough to find (and it is) the Nvidia team are drawing a necessary correlation between low supply and "selling like hotcakes". It's the same situation (but now for Nvidia instead of AMD) and the very same people who were faulting AMD for selling out in stores with the 68XX are praising Nvidia for selling nearly every 580. This is rank hypocrisy that is transparently illustrated as I've just done. Posting the relevant posters' previous posts would be 'calling them out', so I can't. Boo hoo.

I said the same thing then and I'll say the same thing now: if Nvidia are selling every 580 they are making, good for them. It's the best single gpu setup there is these days. I said this back when the 68XX came out regarding AMD's sales and met with huge resistance. I wonder how much resistance I'll garner for saying something positive about Nvidia :whiste:

Not to mention that none of them have bothered to comment on the fact that Nvidia themselves apparently told some websites that for the first few weeks there would be low supply.
I guess NV saying it doesn't matter and they will still push the selling well angle because they don't want to take note of what Nvidia themselves are supposed to have said.

You do know that competition doesn't necessarily mean lower prices, right?
The GTX480 was the fastest single GPU card, and the GTX470 was better than the 5850 and slightly slower than the 5870.
What did those two cards do to the price of the HD5850 and HD5870? Less than nothing. The prices increased after launch, and stayed above launch for a loooooong time.

I think they did though Wreckage. You can get a pair of 6950's for only $80 more that will demolish a 580. You can also get a pair of 6850's that will still edge out the 580 for $180 cheaper. I'd say that's some pretty good competition.

I won't argue its a good deal, but we had consensus if AMD had a competing model, or faster, as rumors placed Cayman, that it was going to also sell anywhere from 450-550.
The 5870 went from 379.00 to 399 or more a year ago, because of no competition at Christmas.
No doubt in my mind the 6990 will be 700 dollars in us etailers, when it launches.

I won't argue its a good deal, but we had consensus if AMD had a competing model, or faster, as rumors placed Cayman, that it was going to also sell anywhere from 450-550.
The 5870 went from 379.00 to 399 or more a year ago, because of no competition at Christmas.
No doubt in my mind the 6990 will be 700 dollars in us etailers, when it launches.

I'm considering it. Right now I live in Germany and on amazon.de an evga gtx580 is about 580 euros. That's significantly more than you'd be paying for that one off newegg, unfortunately.

Except that few people want to deal with the headache that is crossfire driver support. I've seen a number of people go from crossfire to a single card and say they were much happier.

Not to mention the power draw, noise and heat of 6xxx crossfire (which many AMD fans show extreme concern over) far exceeds a 580.

I think this is why the 580 started selling out right after the 6970 launch. This in no coincidence.

The 6970 matches the 570 in performance (while still lacking Physx). But from the above link....

"Under load, Nvidia's stock coolers simply outperform AMD's. The GTX 570's GPU temperature exactly matches the 6970's, the two cards' power draw is only 5W apart, yet the GTX 570 is 2.5 dB quieter.

So the price of the 5xx series did not drop and now there is a run on those cards. I would not be surprised if the 570's started to sell out as well.

I like threads like this because they provide endless amusement...watching the nvidia damage control that leaps to action to try to discredit anyone with an anti-nvidia stance is funny lol (it's funny how people behave in such predictable ways!). That said, come on, if you reallllly want a gtx580 bad enough, you'll be able to find one. It's not like the cards don't exist.

AMD's new Radeon HD 6900 series is a disappointment to users who expected HD 5970 or GTX 580 performance levels from the new series. The new VLIW4 shader design can not make a huge performance impact as some have guessed, but it opens up a lot of room for die size and transistor optimization which effectively makes the GPU cheaper to produce, the cards cheaper to buy - more performance for your hard earned Dollar. Unfortunately AMD's Radeon HD 6970 can not meet that price target. With performance comparable to GeForce GTX 570, but a price that is $50 higher it is difficult to justify the investment. While I applaud AMD for making the bold move to 2 GB video memory, I have my doubts if the price/performance gain is worth it. Some people may see benefits from this when using Eyefinity, but the majority of users will game at 1920x1200, even 2560x1600 is just a niche resolution. I do have my hopes high for the future though, when AIBs will take a good look at the card and strip it down to achieve more competitive price levels - competitive being $329 in my opinion.

Wow they are selling out fast! I wish I owned stock in NVIDIA this quarter is going to be huge. They must be making a killing on these cards. Hopefully Larrabee or something comes back to give us competition next year or these prices will never change.

I wonder how many cards have sold just from people reading this thread. People panicking that they would have to settle for a slower card and then they see links to major retailers in here with stock and they quickly hit buy.

If there were plentiful stock....They'd still be "in" stock.
