Much of an upgrade? I'm sure specific projects will benefit and others would suffer. I mainly want to get back my old Milkway@home projects I was running prior to my 5850 dying on me even with a good after market cooler. I've been too lazy to really do much with my 580 so far but would be more inclined to do so with a 7870 and projects that take advantage of AMD/ATI GPU. Prices on ebay have seem to decline.

I'd keep the GTX580 and add the 7970!

Your mainboard has the card slots and I think your PSU has enough connectors.

Run GPUGrid on the GTX and run Milkyway on the 7970 and they both will only use up one CPU core

Not a bad idea. I was thinking of using the money from the 580 to buy the 7970. I may have other things I can get rid of though. The energy company should be happy with my FX 8350 and GTX 580 making them money. I've been looking for programs compatible with 8.1 pro to control the GPU fan speed on a AMD card. Seems like I had one with Windows 7. I think I may do Asteroids@home instead of GPUGrid though for Nvidia.

Yikes! I didn't realize that MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision X wouldn't run on Win 8.1 Pro?

I only gave GPUGrid as an example of what could be run

And the below is just my idea on what was best for my goals at that time:
I tried running Asteroids on my GTX560Ti 448 core and decided it was too slow. It only ran 2 or 3 times faster than the CPU thread it used
I thought it should have given much better ppd for the electricity used. (I am a points hog so ... less than 10K ppd on A@H versus much greater than 100K ppd on GPUGrid)
Maybe the 580 will be enough faster to be worth while?

if you absolutely need to sell the GTX 580 in order to purchase the HD 7970, it'll be an upgrade for some projects, and probably not much of an upgrade at all for other projects. i'll mention that for the Einstein@Home project, 580 -> 7970 will definitely be an upgrade - AMD GPUs dominate the list of top hosts on the project...but despite what your signature says, it appears you haven't been crunching E@H lately.

I suspect you already know, but for MW the 7970 (I assume the 7870 in your 1st post was a typo?) it would be a massive jump over anything Nvidia - again, re MW.
Checkout my old MW benchmarking thread for some times (new thread only has 1 Nvidia time atm, fancy posting your 580 times?)

Not getting any workunits for my 580 GTX for some reason. Verified preferences in GPUGrid, Asteroids, and Einstein

uninstalled boinc, and cleared everything out. Added projects back and got workunits.

Cool, running MW?

I had it run SETI to break it in again over night. I may switch to MW on the 580 GTX just to get a WU runtime estimate. I've been eyeballing R9 280X auctions on ebay. Last I heard the 7970/R9 280x were identical with the 280x just being a newer model. Seem to be selling for 140-170 a piece. So happy the mining bubble burst

On the MW@Home 1.02 opencl_nvidia task I'm getting a runtime of 5 minutes 40 seconds per task. I think my old 5850 did better . No surprise here, Milkyway@home is an ATI/AMD favorable project. SIMAP and Milkyway were my favorite projects to run though. I'll run milkyway tonight and keep my CPU on POGS.

Is that an average of 5 tasks? If so I can add it to the table .

Oh & yea my 5850 at stock speeds does a MW v1.02 task in ~1min.
Got a new card yet?

I lost out on some r9 280x auctions over the weekend. I've been thinking of maybe just picking up a Radeon 5850/5870 or 6950/6970 to do AMD projects. I can grab a used 5850 for around $50-70. Still weighing all options.
