GTX 580 Vs GTX 460's in SLI star in "What that extra 220 Dollars gets you"

Seriously? 569.99 for a 580? WTF Newegg. Am i the only one who doesn't see the point in this card? IMO it's great and i'd seriously buy it if it was around 400 dollars but even at it's suggested 500 dollar retail whats the point?

Now i understand that the 460's have no upgrade path after having a pair in SLI but so what. For 220 dollars less then a 580 you get almost 580 performance. After it's all said and done tho i'm hoping the Asus 580 drops to under 500 dollars soon because i WANT one so i can put it under water.

Not sure what the big deal is. The 480 has been selling for between $400 and 500 for some time now. The 580 price will settle down a little (remember Newegg has these 10% off as well). There is almost always a price premium for the best....

I used to be able to get 2 x 5850's for <$400 and the 5970 was ~$600.00. How is this different? They are pretty close in performance too...

6850 is same price as the 460 1gb, and Crossfire for better fps than 2x 460s.

AT called it right. The current pricing makes it weak to multi GPU setups, including the gtx460, there's the very powerful CF 6870, surpassing even the 5970.

But, some consumers prefer single GPU setup so they have to pay a premium for it. Or some ppl want to CF/SLI the fastest GPUs.

It's true challenger hasn't launched yet.

That way you get better performance, and you save 200$ for it.

It's similar/cheaper in price, but the CF 6870 is often a lot faster than the 580, whereas CF 6850 is only slightly faster.

This is the Anandtech benchmark results normalised to a GTX580, with the HD6850 and HD6870 results "adjusted" based on the results from the other thread about 10.10 image quality (performance was taken off HD6850 and HD6870 cards based on worst case performance hit per game, or 10&#37; where there was no result for a specific game, because this was the worst case overall result. Where the 6850 and 6870 had different performance reductions, again worst case was taken. All other results are unaltered from the Anandtech benchmarks, but obviously normalised with GTX580 representing 100%.
Where a game says "CPU limited", performance reductions were still applied, but these results are not accurate because the game was CPU limited, so even with a performance hit, it would still be equal to the GTX580 in real life because it's a CPU limit, but I included a reduced score anyway.
Everything is from the 1920x1200 tests)

You failed to mention that the 6800 cards would look better at those settings. Even with that. all the setups make the 580 look pretty overpriced.

You failed to mention that the 6800 cards would look better at those settings. Even with that. all the setups make the 580 look pretty overpriced.

I won't pass judgement because I don't care enough to faff about with image quality settings and just leave it all at default.
Usually while playing I'm not looking closely enough to notice that stuff.

Just means that no one can complain that there's an "invalid" comparison in favour of Crossfire. Now it's biased towards the NV cards instead

There are advantages to single GPU setups and there is ALWAYS a price premium for the latest and greatest.

And besides as the OP proved, if you want more performance than 'x midrange sli/cf setup' provides, you'll have to pay for it with the best single slot slot cards available.

Forgive me but whats a E5620? Zeon? nevermind its a q9400 right?

On a brighter note, you will max everygame out there at that resolution.
