Hello there

So all i need now for my rig is a new graphics card, and im really eager to get some of the best now that i can afford it for this one time.

My specs are the following
Intel Core I7-870
Asus P7P55D-E Pro
4Gigs Mushkin Redline CL6-1600Mhz
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1tera
OCZ ModXStream 600Watts
And a ATI 4870
I game at 1080P

So my current choice is the GTX 580, as the simplicity talks to me, i have never tried SLI nor Crossfire but wouldnt mind if its a strong winner over the GTX 580

would a 6850Xfire or any other cards choice within the price of GTX 580 be a better choice?

The 580 is a poor value, like most flagship cards are. I'd recommend getting two 6950s like Grooveriding suggested or possibly two 6870s if you don't want to spend more than $500. I personally think that dual 6950s is the setup to have at the moment, not outrageously expensive and delivers insane performance.

I know 580 has its premium but im a glad RPG player the games seems to require lots of power, thats why im willing to spend that much.
There must be some downside to crossfire, or is it as perfect as it gets? if so im all hooked, 2 6950 does look tempting

2 Palit gtx460 1gb for 270$ AR shipped is the best choice. Save yourself 340$ for the same performance.

I'd like to take the step up from there More ram would be good in case of higher resolution play at some time.

Seems like the 6950 is THE choice for high end solution right now, would the 600watt supply struggle to keep this running?

Is most games supported by crossfire now adays?

Alrighty then im convinced

Just a problem though, not sure if the power supply has the needed connectors for both cards - could i use converters of some sort?

Oh your buying a 30 inch monitor @ 2500x1600?

If not the ram will not make a difference @ 1900x1080. 1gb will be just as good as 1.5gb or 2gb's.

+1

Seriously though. The 580 is not worth $130 premium over something like a single 6970. And the 6950 Crossfire totally owns the 580 for $70 more.

Or what Grooveriding posted.

Your gonna recommend 2 6950's for 1900x1080? Hmmm ok.
Mabe you should try to sell him some swampland in Florida now.
What a waste. You have no shame.

Well you never know Its not in my plans at this moment, but might happen eventually, id like to have the extra RAM if it happens though

The problem with crossfire, like any multi-gpu setup is that a game might not support it and the possibility for micro stutter. Personally, I'd get the crossfired 6950s over the 580 without question. Your powersupply will probably be fine seeing as the 6950 tends to draw around 140 watts while gaming.

The 6950's will give you longevity with the 2-GIG of ram.

What is your PSU's exact specs ?

Ok then it makes sense to buy one 6950 now and another one later. It will be cheaper that way. By the time you buy a 1000$ 30 inch monitor a 6950 will be 230$ or less, more then likely.

You do not need more then a 6950 at 1080p now or in the immediate future IMHO. Give it a little over clock and your set.

What youre saying with this?

He is trying to say that 6950 Crossfire will be overkill for your resolution. Sure...Maybe it will be. That just means you can keep them that much longer without upgrading. Especially with the 2 gig of ram on each one.

He's saying that dual 6950s would be overkill at 1080p. However, games will get more demanding, so you'll be good to go for a while with that setup, especially since those cards have huge amounts of video memory.

edit: Mentalillness beat me to it. Amazing that I happened to say pretty much exactly what he said lol.

We just posted the exact same thing. Just different wording.

Yes it will be, and you know that. He could save some money and crossfire later. He will not even notice the second card unless he's benchmarking.

I'd but the second card for Crysis 2 in March mabe.
Might save him 100$.

So your both wasting his money and agreeing on it. Jeeez.

Longevity sounds great

Not really sure where to find those specs unless these come true

+3.3V: 25A
+5V: 25A,
+12V1: 25A, +12V2: 25A
-12V: 0,8A
+5VSB: 4A (peak 5A)

Unless he wants to play Crysis/Warhead or Metro 2033, two would be overkill for the time being. However, I personally like the prospect of having 60fps minimums in pretty much everything.
