If you're not going to upgrade for a while, I'd get two 6950s or a 6970 if you don't want to spend so much.

Good find, MentalIlness. OP, seems that the crossfire HD6950s is what you're looking for and since you said it's unlikely that you'll be able to upgrade for a while it makes sense to get them now. That i7 is a fast chip and you should give it some substantial GPU power to work with, at least that's my mentality.

Like I said, he should get a 6970 and a psu. Over clock the cpu and card and enjoy. when it comes time for a second card , at least he has a psu for it.

For most people, this would be the best route to take. However, it sounds like the OP wants some serious GPU power and dual 6950s pack a serious punch.

PSU will be a easy upgrade for me next year, so if my current can last two months with the cards ill be getting a 850 or something in january-february.

Like many peoples says, the premium of the 6970 doesnt seem to be justified

Yeah, at the moment they're about tied when they're clocked to the same clockspeed. Btw, when you get a new power supply, I'd recommend something by Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling.

Exactly, seems that they do include two of them. Thanks Must be some reviewers edition i saw on youtube then.

So if i plugged two of these into my 4pin molex on my psu and then in one of the cards it should work probrably?

Yes it will be, and you know that. He could save some money and crossfire later. He will not even notice the second card unless he's benchmarking.

I'd but the second card for Crysis 2 in March mabe.
Might save him 100$.

So your both wasting his money and agreeing on it. Jeeez.

There's no guarantee with AMD cards the price will go down any time soon. By the time it does it could be many months from now when the cards are nearing EOL status.

I have great experience with Corsair so probrably going with their HX series i think its called, my previous setup had a Corsair HX620.

Bought this because peoples on some danish hardware site kept recommending it and said it could deliver 700watts and was so great.. Well it has amazing value but do regret buying it, should have chosen something bigger considering its a purchase made 1 month ago.

If you go with dual cards. You will need 4 six pin connectors. Seems your PSU already has two of them.

Do you have two free molex's on your PSU unused ? If so, your good to go I think.

I agree. Corsair PSU's are excellent. In one of my PC's, I have a 550 Corsair, and it is a crap load better than the 850 OCZ I have in one of my other PC's.

Which in a few weeks, is being replaced with a Corsair.

Enjoy

EDIT: The first chance you get to upgrade your PSU. I would do so. Those cards will last you a long time.

The gtx560 hit in a few weeks, we shall see. It will perform somewhere in between a 6870 and 6950 for less the 300$. It should overclock like a champ too.

You can quote me on that.

Has there been a confirmation for the GTX560 ?

My upcoming build, I have most of the hardware. Including a 6870 trying to figure out what to do with. While im still deciding on another card. But I wont return the 6870...it may go to the kids.

Dual 6950s are about the best performance you can do on the power supply. It should handle it, but I do recommend you upgrade it. Do not do any overclocking on the processor or video cards if you do get two 6950s.

An interesting thing you could do is take advantage of AMD's Powertune to actually lower the power consumption of the video cards until you are able to get a new power supply. You'll sacrifice some performance, but you'll have more peace of mind and reduce the risk of overloading the power supply.

Have you not read what he's been saying?

This is my "christmast gift", meaning with some agreeing with my parents, if i only get a single 6950 card that will be it, probrably wont see the money to upgrade again in near future either.

He has the ability to take advantage of a good gift now. He might as well get the best he can get.

And he doesn't need to overclock his CPU at all, especially for Metro which is not CPU-bound.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about overclocking. You will be fine and happy with them not being overclocked.

* Get two cards now. Be happy
* Down the road, upgrade PSU.....Be happy
* After you upgrade PSU...overclock.....Be happy
* All the while extending your "longevity" that you seem to like.....Be happy
* "IF" you decide to upgrade monitor, you will "not" have to upgrade PSU nor GPU.....Be happy
* Be happy

Good Advice much better a pair of 2gb 6950's which will keep you happy for over a year easily and the rest upgrade as you go. i

I would get the most expensive PSU you can afford-try and get over 1000watts ideally 1250 then you'll never have to buy another one. Mine was £250 but I really pleased because it will run three top graphics cards with overclock plus overclocked CPU.

Crossfired 6950's would be a bit of a waste at his resolution right now but there is a minuscule chance he'd be able to get a 6950 for $100 cheaper in March. He might be able to save a few bucks but I doubt it will drop that much.

Stalker, Metro2033, Crysis, and a few others will struggle at 1080p unless some settings are turned down but most games should run really well with one 6950.

Edit: Didn't see the one time buy deal for Christmas. I'd definitely get a pair of 6950s if your parents will spring for it.
