Looking at the old rig in my sig below, does anyone think that the GTX660 would be ok to replace my old GTX295 and leave all my other components alone or will the CPU get bottle necked?

Replacing your gtx295 with a gtx660 will likely net you a small increase in brute performance. That being said, with the extra total usable memory the gtx660 has, combined with getting away from an SLI setup, AND taking into account the less heat and noise that the gtx660 would produce, it may end up being a better experience for gaming. Despite the possible small increase in overall performance, it may be perceived to be a noticeably better experience because of more stable frame rates and more vram. Is your CPU overclocked? At 1920x1080, it will be somewhat of a bottle neck depending on what games you play. If you're playing at 1680x1050 then it will probably be even more of a bottle neck. That CPU is a great overclocker, so if you don't have it overclocked and do not want to upgrade the CPU at this time, I suggest looking into overclocking it.

I picked up a GTX 660 for my living room HTPC build, figured for the power/heat output it would be better than the GTX 460 in there.

So far it handles 720p without issue, and the build is ultra quiet which is what I wanted. The case is some big ugly thing which I tucked behind a cabinet (for now) and the GTX 460 was getting noticeably warm (and thus audible).

You're going to enjoy this card, and man is it tiny!

as mentioned above, that cpu is already limiting your gtx295. heck its limiting even just one of your gpus in some games.

If you were to do this, I would add in a quad core on the cheap, like a Q660 G0. It should get you up around 3.4 -3.6, and be less of a bottleneck. IMO, I saw a nice increase when I went from my C2D to C2Q, and the clock speed increase didn't hurt . And it was nice not having to upgrade anything else at the time.

a Q6600 is a power hog at those frequencies and may not even get to those speeds in the first place. and it probably would take 3.4 just to match the E8500 in games that need speed more than cores. he could just to oc the E8500 to 3.8, which is an easy oc, and that will help a lot but still be a large limitation for a 660.

It made a great heater, and it is almost November after all.

But yeah, either way there is going to be some performance loss coming from the CPU. A lot of it just depends on the games you play, and how much you like eye candy.

I'll just up my question. What brand of gtx 660 is good enough to last at least 2 years? I mean the durability.. gainward, palit, inno3d?

Guys thanks much for all your feedback on my dilemma to either upgrade the gtx295 or not. Also I did not mean to hijack the thread at all.

Right now however, its just isnt in the cards to upgrade the "big 3" (cpu, mobo, ram) tho i would go that route in a heartbeat if i could. The vibe im getting is that the 660 just isnt worth the upgrade to me if the rest of the rig stays the same. (see sig) I was dreading those responses tho i kinda knew it was coming. Ugh

Guess I will just have to be on the lookout for some smokin good deals on cpu/mobo.

Thanks again!

Zotac doesn't have a good showing for the 660, but I don't think any of the manufacturers are at 'stay away' status. As far as I can remember, every new card was from a different manufacturer. The only one that died on my was a Gainward, but that was after several years.

What kind of improvements are you seeing (noise, power, heat, etc)?

Newegg is showing rebates on many of these cards this week, if anyone is interested.
