Because Im already getting 1080p 60fps locked on all games. Thank you.

680 is overkill unless you wanna SLI and play @ 3000x2600 resolution,,,, hmmmmm

No need for all that power yet,,, Maybe Max Payne will like the 680 but overall you dont need a 6xx card to have a pleasing experience.... thx

$399 is my realistic limit...

It's sad that CPUs are so affordable these days, but GPUs have just gotten ridiculous. I used to spend $200 on a GPU and $500 on a CPU, now the opposite is pretty much true. SLI isn't $400, it's $1K!

Oh well, can't control the market.

to be fair, a video card is a lot more than just a chip.

you have the GPU which has to be designed to fit a custom built "motherboard" and paired with extremely fast ram in a relatively intricate infterface, as well as have a relatively purpose-built cooling.

I used to buy GPU's that were 200-300$ only (when I was 16-22)

Now I'm 25 and I buy whatever the F I want

Well yay. I own my own home and 100% debt free (yeah, I'm bragging). I still won't pay more than $300 for a video card. That's what ticks me off about this unspoken collusion Nvidia and AMD seem to have to keep prices jacked up.

My SLI 570s are generally faster so no....and I'm not paying 1 grand + tax for graphics cards in one sitting to beat it just yet.

I think I will wait and see what "big kepler" is gonna be.

Too rich for my blood. I don't think I've spent much over $300 on a single card and once bought two GTX 260s (216) for $400 (that was a pretty sweet setup).

All I really need is GTX 580 performance and I'll be happy. Maybe NV will come out with a nice card for me, then again, maybe the 580 will drop low enough and that's what I'll buy.

factory OCed pitcarin cards offer GTX580 performance in a much modern form so if all you want is gtx580 performance you don't have to wait. Probably you want that and it just must be nvidia, right?

You guys are lucky that you get to buy performance mainstream cards for $300. In India, $300 only gets you 1 GB 6950 or GTX 560 TI. Nothing else.

My MSI 7970 reference cost me nearly $750 and it still costs around $650 or so here (in India).

This.

Here is why:
In most cases, a 7870 stock is 90-95% of a GTX 580 stock. Once overclocked, it is like 5-15% faster than a stock GTX 580. Basically an oced 7870 competes with an oced 580 GTX at the very least.

Haha, yeah, I'm probably more frugal now that I'm an "adult" than I was when I was younger. I'm not debt-free, but buying a $500+ video card wouldn't be any kind of a burden, either, and certainly less of one than it would have been when I was 16,22, or 25. I just can't picture spending that much money for such a tiny improvement in performance compared to what we are used to seeing. It's a lot of fun to get great deals on stuff that you really want, and even though I'd be excited to own any of the latest/greatest video cards, my deal-o-meter would be going apes**t after seeing what we've had over the past 4-5 years when shrinking the node.

Not right away, my heavily OCed GTX480 is giving me better performance than a 580 and runs all my games just fine at 1080p. I might even skip this generation it depends on if any new games come out that my card wont handle.

I have considered that and recently re-read the AnandTech review. I like the lower power consumption and the performance looks very good. After waiting six months for some half decent drivers for the original Radeon card, I swore I'd never buy an ATI card again. So I get a little sick feeling in my stomach every time I try to buy ATI/AMD. We'll see what happens this go around, but I'd handicap it 80/20 in favor of NV.

I feel the performance value is more evolutionary and incremental when the 28nm node and arch is substantial and significant. Really believe nVidia intended this chip and design to combat the 349-399 price-point, when I look at price performance.

But based on where the market has set pricing, one may offer smaller chips in monolithic price-points. It is what it is and still nice to see more competition and choice for gamers to consider though.

It's up to individuals and the market to decide if there is enough value, competition, compelling reasons and demand to keep prices where they are.

No, you don't.

One of the worst posts I have seen here. 560ti is plenty for 99.9% of games (Tf2/ dota2/cs:go/sc2/global agenda, tribes ascend, any mmo, any decent rts etc etc). You might, maybe, not get 60fps on the super crappy "AAA" next-gen graphics, consolized, boring as hell turds that come out every 8 months like brink, crysis 2, and rage, but why should you care?

Yes. Time to build a new computer. AMD X2 4200+ and a 4870 not cutting it any more.

Also getting a 120hz monitor so VERY interested in adaptive vsync.

@AVP: Your post isn't much better. With my gtx 480 @ stock + 2500K @ 4.5 running at 1680x1050, I can dip down pretty low for me in both dragon age II and nwn 2 when I really crank up the details. Nwn2 in particular can get low, I've seen it in the 20's several times recently with 32xCSAA + 2xSSAA. I don't think that there are 2000 halfway decent games from the past few years in the entire world that require a video card, in light of this your "99.9%" statement seems to also be a bit of an exaggeration.

And marginalizing specific games just b/c you don't like them doesn't mean that they aren't important to some people.

You can up image quality and redundant processing in any game to bring any graphics card to its knees. That's not the point. Per tweakboy's original post, he posted his opinion and he very well may be getting 60FPS @ 1080p in all his games. Why are you all arguing about this?

Not planning on buying the GTX 680, but the efficiency, performance, pricing and die size give me high hopes that the GTX 670 and 660 are going to be excellent GPUs in terms of price/performance. Definitely going to consider one of those for my next build this summer.
