Give it a rest. You're seeing enemies where there are none. I think s/he provided relevant information in a non-fanboy/fangirl-ish way. If you don't think the information is valuable, that's fine, criticize the message. But attacking the messenger is against the rules of the forum, especially against new forumers. How'd you like it if you just joined and that was your first post and the first guy that responds to you calls you a nvidia marketer?

I wasn't attacking anyone, I was actually joking / poking fun at previous posts (which suggested that ATF is the home of AMD viral). I don't think anyone here is an nvidia marketer. Whatevs though, wasn't intended to offend anyone

Yeah $700 might be an estimate of MSRP, but still it makes anything less than $500 retail seem unlikely.

I tried to do a google translate on this new article (released today) by OBR saying something about GTX 680, but cannot figure out which language it is from:

http://www.obr-hardware.com/

Hopefully it's saying something new about GTX 680 since OBR was usually able to get his hands on engineering samples and leaking stuff on XS forums before getting banned from there. He used to be a friend of mine (as you can see on my profile page over at XS : http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/member.php?27609-Bo_Fox ).

If it performs on par with a 7970, what would you call it?

good competition.

These cards are what they are. Call them midrange, call them highend. It doesn't matter what they were intended to be because they are the best cards both companies could muster at this time.

Cool story...but OBR is as biased as they come.

If it's a $500+ midrange card, then Nvidia is really ripping people off.

No, I refuse to believe that.

ripping ppl off!!!
thats what they do. remember???

Nvidia is trying to make money selling graphics cards!!!! how dare them!!! They are gonna sell a mid range chip for over $500? what!!!!

1) if you dont like the price, dont buy it!!!
2) if its faster than a 580, faster than 7970, do you think its midgrade?
3) if you only want to pay 250$ for a graphics card, than buy a 250$ gpu!!!
4) this is just stupid!

it is a nice spin, but there are facts that just arent gonna let this spin get very popular.

1) we pay for cards based on their performance.
2) people payed $550 for the 7970
3) they will pay it for a card that is faster
4) People are used to paying high dollar for nvidia cards.
5) this spin is laughable

Besides. if its called midrange, it just makes AMD look worse. Nvidia is a stronger brand name and typically a higher premium. The gk104 has a chance of actually having a better price/performance ratio than the 7970. There is no way your gonna sway customers away by saying nvidis is ripping them off when they are giving a better deal than AMD. Its not possible!

nd if AMD drops prices on the 7970, nvidia can still sell cards with a high price. Thats nvidia , thats what they do!!!!!!

Nvidia is the intel of GPUs. They have a stronger brand name. its just how it is. its how its been

Is this the company pep talk they give at the Nvidia headquarters every morning?

This could really become an another NV40 vs R420 again. Yet this time it might be quite hard to differentiate the two products unlike then, where it was all about DX9 vs openGL + SM3.0 vs S.M2.0 etc.

If it's 500 Dollars or more it ain't midrange.Yet some people claim it is midrange..

Figured it's written in Czech, so the translation from OBR's article is (I'll just copy all of the contents, and then paste the translation here, with the answer to your price issue in red):

OBR said:

That's now about face to AMD ... it and it lasts a whole year!

I know the price of Czech GeForce GTX 680, and it's a bomb. Lower than everyone suspected and skuhrají the web, if you wait for this card - just buy one of the first batch. The starting price is significantly lower than at this moment the cheapest Radeon HD 7970 on the Czech market! An absolute must-have for enthusiasts. Long experience shows that the second and another batch of cards will be more expensive (traders will want to make) ... even if the price of Radeon go down over time and the situation calms down.
Original article by OBR: http://www.obr-hardware.com/2012/03/chcete-geforce-gtx-680-budte-rychli.html

I'd still take it with a micro-grain of salt, knowing that not everything is set in stone yet..

EDIT: BTW, OBR stole my picture, but that's ok since he's my friend!

I'm a wee bit confused about this, the 104 in the 5xx series was mid range, now we have a 104 in the 6xx series and it's now a high end card?...does that mean no 110?, or it is a cheap shot by NV to get high end price with a mid range chip?

I'm at the point now where I am really up for an upgrade of my video cards. I was looking over 580 tri-sli benches tonight on the few sites that have both those and 7970CF benches and it is just not a compelling increase.

I would need to be guaranteed about 1200core clocks on both 7970s to be happy with it. Nvidia has always been about big monster die flagships that have a 20% lead on whatever else is out there with some OC headroom on top. That is the performance I need from two cards.

Will be very disappointed if these don't deliver and wind up being 7970 - Green Edition. :sneaky: I don't want to get three cards to get an increase I'd notice, for financial and thermal reasons. Even if the cards are decent on thermals, I only have enough radiator to cool a cpu, mobo and 2 gpus. 3 gpus would be too much.

Have a nasty feeling I am stuck waiting till the end of the year or possibly next year for cards with that sort of performance.

Do you people really expect a card with 256bit bus to be significantly faster than 7970? 7970 loses 13% of its performance when you lower its bandwidth by 33%. GK104 would need to be a hell of a lot better than tahiti and/or have way better z-culling algorithms for that to be true.

Or just a different architechture with different technologies to achieve the same goal...
