I'll trying to OC the CPU thanks for the tip.

The 770 is not really out of my price range at all. But if I can save the money because my computer isn't going to need all that power, than I rather would. My only guilt here is the fact that I would be spending over $500+ for a video card that a $300 one could do just as well if not better on a 1680x1050 resolution.

Again, this is mainly so I can get Skyrim running with ENB, all those nice textures mods, and some gameplay ones. Im just tired of trying to play a choppy stuttering game due to FPS.

I have been using skyrim with a lot of mods, texture packs and heavy ENB with 7970 and even that could be brought to 30 FPS in the cities.

You will need more than 2GB of ram if you intend to use high res texture packs and those really worth it and make a lot of difference.

Heavy ENB's tax the gpu so a 770 isn't really an overkill the 760 might not be able to handle it.

I would recommend an overclockable 7950, the price is pretty good for the performance and offers everything you need.

I played Skyrim from beginning to end on a 570 and an i5-760 @ 4ghz. Only trouble I had running it was when the game was new and had a bug or poor coding that made the CPU run inefficiently and impacted performance in some areas. After a patch was released to fix that, never had a problem running it (@1920x1200), and this after accumulating some 1.6gb in texture mods. I understand others had problems with over 5gb texture mods, but not sure how widespread that was. Again I suspect this to be poor coding in the game that mis-managed vid mem usage and will not likely be encountered in other games. I just cannot fathom how vidmem runs out at 1680x1050 even on a 1250mb card. It may do in this instance, but I dont think I would buy more than a 2gb GPU to run at that res, even if the shitty coding of one game required it. If I was interested in improving the look and visual impact of the game, the first thing I would buy would be a larger monitor, and even prioritize that over a GPU upgrade.

Re ENB mods, I never associated those with much of a performance penalty as they are mostly post-processing and color enhancements. A few with advanced lighting effects may have some impact but nothing major. Not sure how far they've come now since last trying them over a year ago, but I recall I had to tinker a lot with the settings to get them right and even then was never satisfied due to inconsistencies.

Next gen consoles going with 8gb of VRAM.. Yes some of its shared but you can expect new 1080 games to really lean hard on VRAM

Get the plain 760 4gb for 260 and be done with it. Your not looking for anythin fancy and that would work perfect in your case

Skyrim is primarily CPU limited. You will see instant gains overclocking your 2500K high as you're willing to go.

I have a GTX760 OC 2GB and run Skyrim with a number of mods (Skyrim HD 2K, Flora Overhaul Summer Ed, COT+Project ENB, WATER, HD Fire effects Ultra etc) and it does use almost all of the 2GB (@1920x1080 about 1600-1950MB). However I get an almost constant 60fps v-sync lock and GPU usage is more often in the 60-80% usage range so it's not being taxed very hard at this res. This is on a 4770K @ 4.8GHz. It's very enjoyable for me as is but I can't really add much more in the way of mods now.

So for the small price difference, it's worth getting a >2GB card for this game to enjoy the more extreme mods.

Doubt it. Given the long release cycles of consoles (8-9 years), 4k will be in widespread use far before then. 8k perhaps near the end of consoles life cycle though maybe not widespread.

Dice already had to cut BF4 back to 720p on PS4/XB1.

4K is ludicrously out of reach for PS4/XB1 in any 'real' way.

I'm not so sure 8K is out of the picture, when browsing somewhere lately I saw 8K for what I would consider 4K's price range to be. I don't remember if it was $5-10,000 but if they are developing them in parallel it may become mainstream in a similar time frame?

Op,if your sitting around pulling your hair out like i did for days on end trying to decide if you wanna cheap out and go gtx760 while you got the money for something like a 7970ghz or a gtx770 then go gtx770 if it won't hurt.
