Hey guy's I am new to the forums how yall doin. I am currently a Radeon HD guy at heart and own an HD 7850 but I am seriously considering picking up a GTX 760 because it offers something very rare from nvidia which is both value/performance My question to the community is why does a 170watt TDP part need an 8pin+ 6pin power connector ? The GTX 760 looks to be a sweet deal and decent upgrade from the HD 7850 1GB ? My only concern is that my PSU does not have an 8pin power connector though I have ran an OCed 220watt part from nvidia in the past off dual molex to 6pin and the one and only dedicated 6pin that my PSU has. I don't want one of them crappy looking crippled PCB cards so I will be going with a full sized card from EVGA or Msi or Asus. Any help would be great.

Since we banned the OP there's not much reason to leave this open.

Gordon: you're still not welcome here.

OP could you please mention your CPU, PSU model & brand, monitor resolution. also your max budget. which country are you from ?

some cards are designed for extreme overclocking with water or other exotic cooling methods like LN2. when overvolted you can get the GK104 Keplers to 1.4+ ghz quickly increasing power consumption to above 225w. so its just a card built with maximum OCing as a key design goal. the msi gtx 760 hawk has two 8 pin power.

also if you can afford a GTX 760 i suggest getting a HD 7950 which is all round the faster card.

Ya the min framerates are a bit better on the HD 7950 but the 760 is cheaper and drinks less power as my PSU is only 460watts. I don't like to OC my GPUs but only when I first get them just to see how far they can be pushed. I have never had good luck with OCing and really an extra 5fps is not worth it to me. If i did OC I would go AMD for sure because nvidia sucks for OCing. That said my HD 7850 sucks at OCing and I can only get an extra 50Mhz out of it which does not change the framerate in any meaningful or noticable way. Sometimes OCing even makes the framerate slow down or make the mins lower and max higher which is not what I am after. If I need more perfiormance i will buy a better GPU. I run an OCed x4 955 cpu but will be getting a 6300fx down the road.

MSI 760 HAWK looks very promising

The Hawk looks good but I am not into OCing TBH. Plus it's way overpriced as I could just get an HD 7970 and have 5 to 10% more performance against a max OCed GTX 760 for the same price. What I really like about the GTX 760 is the vaule price point it represents for the performance it delivers even if the minimum framerates are just a bit better or on par with an HD 7870.

That is precisely why it is good for you.It has probably the highest factory oc among the 760s. I believe it comes @ $269, if you can get a 7970 at that price that is undoubtedly one hell of a deal.

Can't get a HAWK on Newegg and the TF 760s are $300+ so .... There's no point in buying a value priced mid range card for the same price as a faster higher tier card imo.

If your concerned about your minimum framerates then you really should upgrade your CPU. I personally went from a Phenom II 960T @ 4.0Ghz to a 3570K and didn't notice much of an increase in my AVG framerate, but my minimums increased substantially. Of course every game is performs a little different. If you are looking at buying a GTX 760, look and see if the cards you are looking at come with a 6pin to 8pin adapter. My 7950 from MSI came with one. A good quality 460Watt PSU with your oc'd PII should have no problem running a GTX 760 at stock clocks. A stock GTX 760 should pull around 170 watts.

I ran a 220watt GTX 280 SC for over a year on this same 460watt PSU and it's still going fine. It's just a bit above par PSU acording to Johnny Guru but it's no Seasonic thats for sure. My CPU runs all games just fine except online like in BF3. In BF3 Campain I can crank up the setting to Ultra with 4xmsaa no problem but online I have to run it on low wih 2x MSAA and it still gets choppy from time to time but is still decent mostly 50 to 60fps. GW2 sucks on both AMD or Intel for some reason but really I am not looking to win any Bencmarks so AMD CPU is just fine for me. The fx 6300 under max OC is actually quite a beast and is only 95watt TDP. Thanx for the reply.

Can't you get it delivered from Newegg?
Newegg has a store for Canada and a store for US. You cannot order from US in Canada. It's just a another way for US to make money from other countries. Newegg.ca is always priced a bit to allot higher than Newegg.com.

OP what brand psu do you have ? how many amps does your psu provide on +12v rail ? also whats your budget.

you can buy a factory overclocked HD 7950. the gigabyte HD 7950 comes at 1 Ghz and matches a HD 7970(925 Mhz) out of the box.

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814125414

here is user feedback on the card

Ya that's a great deal as well. It's only $4 more than a GTX 760 and performas better on the min framerates. I might end up going that way then.

Why does it say on nVidia's site that the GTX 760 only requires 2 6-pin connectors. The GTX 660 only required 1 6-pin.

I won't OC it. If I need more performance I will turn down in game settings or buy a faster GPU.

I would have to advise against radeons this generation IF you do not OC. They do not offering superior value at stock clocks. The gtx760 is the best for the non overclocker, it does the overclocking for you with boost and generally run in the 1.1ghz range in games, well above its default.

Radeons are only good when you consider their massive OC potential.
