Hello gents,

Finally retiring the old 5870 into the HTPC box, and replacing it with a GTX 770. Purchasing with a buttload of amazon gift cards I've been saving. Thoughts on the best bet?

ASUS ($339): http://www.amazon.com/GTX770-DC2OC-2...eywords=gtx770

EVGA ($346): http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-S...eywords=gtx770

MSI ($319): http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Computer-C...eywords=gtx770

PNY ($310): http://www.amazon.com/PNY-GeForce-Di...eywords=gtx770

GIGABYTE ($339): http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GDDR...8-1&keywords=Gigabyte+GTX+770+OC+Windforce+3X

Thanks in advance!

Raswan

EDIT: Added the gigabyte in there, as it's AT's recommendation and priced the same.

Either one of the top three would be my choice, probably the one from MSI because of the price.
I don't like the cooler on the one from PNY and wouldn't chose that one if you don't need a blower.

Be careful with the Gigabyte card as it's quite long compared to the others. If you're putting it in a SFF style case, chances are it won't fit. The MSI is the shortest. You can't really go wrong with either Asus, MSI, or EVGA.

In my experience, Asus is the best. However, you can't really go wrong with any of these (except the PNY, which I have no expereience with). You could go with a top-of-the-line R9 280X, for under $300. Asus's 280X is $330, and comes with 3 games (idk lol).

I'd still pick the Asus or the EVGA or the Gigabyte, though.

My friend owns the MSI 770 one and he recommends it. He bought it when it came out, full price and everything, so around $400. At $320 or so, I think you're best off with this one.

Cheers

I'd spend a little more in this case for an XFX R9 290.

4GB of VRAM vs. 2GB
When overclocked, it blows the 770 out of the water
Lifetime warranty
Comes with 3 free games (can be redeemed up to August 2014)

*Make sure to overclock your CPU or otherwise it'll be a big bottleneck at stock speeds.

If you insist on the 770, I'd go for the MSI Gaming version as it's one of the quietest and cheapest on your list. Spending more than $320 on a 770 when R9 290 dips to $360-400 makes little sense to me otherwise.

+1 vote for this, that's quite a nice deal on that 290 as well with the coupon code. Nice find!

I've got the EVGA card (expect mine has the dual-bios switch), great card that runs cool and quiet. I'd say you can't go wrong with any of them, except I'd skip over the PNY because I'm not a blower cooler type of guy.

I'd personally skip the GTX 770, and grab this Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 for $379.99:

http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GDDR5...dp/B00HS84DFU/

it's worth every penny of the additional $40 over the Gigabyte GTX 770.

There is also the used like new option on this card for $348

Nothing wrong with the GTX 770 other than it's current price point. Just doesn't seem like a good buy too me at least.

I guess maybe the OP wants to give the NVidia a try this go around, or possibly wants to play around with some of the proprietary features.

I've actually not been keeping an eye on the 290 recently--it's always been between the 280 and the 770, and the latter (according to AT benches, as well as the voodoopower ratings here) is a bit better for around the same price. My previous experiences with HIS AMDs hasn't been great, but that's not really an issue.

hmmm, you make me think. $300 is really the price point I was trying to stick to. I'd have to look at TDP, as this is going in a system that is by now several years old. It's got an Antec 550W.

EDIT: looks like they "advise" a minimum 600W psu. Which means I could prolly make it happen, but no way I'm spending this much on a card and toss the dice on the psu. Which would mean replacing my current one at a cost of ~100-125, which means I'm now $200 over budget. Thoughts?

Of the cards you listed, I don't think you can go wrong with the Asus, EVGA, or Gigabyte cards. I personally prefer two larger fans to three smaller fans, so would lean towards the Asus or EVGA cards. I have had excellent luck with both, but think the EVGA wins out with a slightly better cooler and warranty.

Best of luck with your new cards!

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll check specs on this Antec to be sure.

Agreed. Some excellent prices there. The PSU I'm running is the mediating factor here, as it's only 550w. It's chugging along, and as far as I can tell would handle the 770 just fine, so upgrading to the 290 adds an additional hundred bucks.

My cpu (sig) is also obviously balls-old, but it's not getting an upgrade for another year. Thanks for the info here, some further mulling over the next couple days is apparently called for.

Thoughts on used gpus via amazon warehouse deals? Anyone have experience with them (particularly as they speak to warranty)?

I've got to admit to being incredibly leery. My gpu usually lasts until it burns out or 3 years, whichever comes first. Don't know how I feel about plunking down $300+ on a used item.
