I bet majority of 290 users will use their 290X like this one here:

780Ti amazing OC thanks to good cooler.
Overclocker edition 780 GHz B1 stepping max OC out of 2 tested samples was 1123Mhz which was stock boosting clock.
290X with its terrible leafblower clocked to 1220.
290 clocked up to 1220 mhz aswell. That was cooled with mk-26 aftermarket heatsink.
I have a feeling that good aftermarket cooler will benefit 290X the most out of these.

The winner here is clearly a good custom R290, for ~$400-420, is going to rival the much more expensive R290X AND super more expensive 780Ti.

Obligatory: "TAKE MY MONEY"!! memo.. if only it could come sooner.

On the subject of taxation...I feel for you guys in MA having to pay tax now, but I have to say....it's going to happen to everyone at some point. I'm lucky in that there are hardly any etailers collecting state tax in my state - yet, it is inevitable outcome in the coming years. I see the lines between B+M / online sales blurring in the next few years - I fully expect 5 years from now that everyone will pay state tax to amazon and newegg. Let's not kid ourselves, I don't want this to happen but it's going to happen.

It sucks, but it's going to happen at some point. As far as amazon prime, I like amazon for electronics but their prices on non-electronics has gone way up in the past year - in 2009-2011 amazon's prices were downright amazing, now? Not so much compared to retail. It's about the same, but without the hassle of dealing with morons at a B&M store. I'm hesitant to renew amazon prime later this year just because their prices suck compared to a year or two ago on non-electronics - and you get free shipping on orders 35$ and up anyway. And their warehouse is within 2 business days of me anyway, so.....screw it.

EVGA will let me 'step-up' from my 780 HC Classifieds, but it's more of a step-down :/ Wouldn't cost me anything but shipping. 780ti Classified is at least over a few month out per their forum.

Complaining about taxes. How much do you pay for state applied sales tax ? Couldn't be as bad as it is in Canada. Everything you buy has +13% in tax added regardless of where or how you buy it. Every $1000 you spend gets $130 added no matter what.

Wouldn't cost you anything but shipping to have something that you can sell for much more than your 780s, and can out perform them if you put in the effort?

Err....

FYI everyone, it is common knowledge that you don't discuss tax evasion on public forums. Even if we find an e-tailer that does not collect sales tax, we still report the purchase and pay use tax on our returns.....right everyone (US residents)

Given the price asked, I was expecting a lot more. I should have known better than to expect Nvidia to price their card more competitively. No reason for 780/titan owners to step up to this.

Many states in the US have zero taxation for online purchases - some states do have taxation for online purchases but this varies in terms of percentage. But you can't do an apples to apples comparison here since healthcare costs a ton of money, and we are taxed at a city / state / local / federal / etc etc etc level on all other things.

That said this will change. I'm positive that every state at some point will tax all online purchases, it's basically a certain outcome. How long that takes, who knows.

You thought there was going to be a 28nm card that was worth it to trade another high end 28nm card for? :confused;

Fastest gets to charge a halo premium.....780ti will sell as many as NV predicts they will at the price point. If they don't, they will drop it.

The free market is a predictable thing.

Bought from Tiger Direct with next day air ($20). Evga vanilla. I may gets ballsy when the card arrives and rip the bios from it and try to "stick" it on a 780. I'm 99.999999999999997% sure it won't work but without risk there is no reward.

I won't shop at Tiger Direct. I get charged tax online plus shipping, and they don't offer in store pick up. I called them and asked if they would match Newegg and they said no. Pretty sorry if you ask me. Even Best Buy price matches Newegg now.

Nice!

You got stones messing with bios on >$500 cards.

lol, where were you when I flashed my Titan?

we'll see. It all depends on if I want to bother with having to blind flash. I may just blow em' out the door for $400 ea... sigh.... dunno yet.

You know what's crazy?

I was just reading a review where at 2560, SLi'd 780's get 69 fps in Metro LL. I'll be darned that in the same review it shows a single oc'ed Ti gets 66 fps. The single non oc'ed 780 was pulling 49. There are definitely times when having a single beastly card makes Sli look silly.

btw, I confirm those results with my own 2 cards.

I wish I could compare Batman AO results but the latest patch broke the benchmark mode.

Chit son...before you do something crazy let me figure out if I want to do away with SLI and go with a single 780. I may end up going with the MSI Gaming one though. Haven't made up my mind, but I have been entertaining the idea.

to be honest, I would rather drive 60 mins to Microcenter to get it NOW and support a local business that I like. Microcenter is like crack.

About a year ago I went there with my wife and something funny happened, to her anyways. She left me in the first aisle and went across the street to Trader Joe's for about 45 minutes. When she returned, she couldn't find me. Finally after walking around the store she called me and asked me where I was. I was still in the first aisle (cooling gear). I found out that day that she has a lot of patience for me.

I went to the Micro Center near where I work during my lunch break today. They didn't have any in yet.

Not only is 290x made irrelevant by Nvidia with the Ti, AMD made it irrelevant from the other side with the 290.

AMD stock is still sitting in the $3 range for a reason.

Hardforum keeps losing credibility....all it does is center on MSRP of the cards. Not only are there no 290x, but when you can find out, you sure as heck aren't paying $549 for it. And then everyone recommends you slap on an expensive cooler.......

This round of launches is actually very telling.

I agree with you totally, but being the miser I am...I have a hard time paying more for something I know I could get for less.

Tiger Direct is NOT a bad store, just their selection here in Raleigh is not as good as it used to be. In fact, they were still asking $399 and $440 bucks for the GTX 770, and their 7950s and 7970s were still $400 and $500 respectively. So, if they aren't willing to price match, no point in supporting them when their prices are so out of whack on some items. Motherboards and CPUS? Yeah. Very good and competitive prices...just not as good of a selection as they really need imho.

^ You really don't think North Carolina has someone looking on social media/internet to catch people who admit buying expensive merchandise and failing to report it?

That's all I will say on the subject...but just looking out for a fellow ATOTer.

...And what does this have to do with the thread topic?

290x no longer has the performance crown, and if you are going to spend the money and void your warranty with an aftermarket cooler anyway, why not go with the regular 290?

The people who want the absolute fastest will go 780ti, and people in the next tier down will go 290 or 780.

Actually I am waiting on custom R290.. from the looks of Accelero results, at ~$400 for a Gigabyte Windforce model, it comes very close to the big boys OC vs OC.

I agree with Silver though I am surprised he recommended the Gigabyte. I thought you worked for MSI, Silver?

Exactly....R290 cannibalized 290x, which is where the margin for AMD was. They both cost the same to make, and now AMD is selling them both for less than what they wanted to.

290 is a price/performance monster.....even more than AMD wanted. Good for end users, bad for shareholders.

I know what you mean, but comparing GTX 780 Ti to R9 290X in "Quiet" mode is the most apples to apples comparison (and in fact, GTX 780 Ti is still a bit quieter than R9 290X in "Quiet" mode). That said, there are still big differences in temperatures on these reference models, so still not quite apples to apples.

And this works both ways too. [H]OCP compared GTX 780 Ti to only R9 290X in "Uber" mode.

We are talking about high-end cards that are $550 and more, of course we are going to run in the setting that allows the cards to achieve their potential. If I spend $550 on a card, I'm not going to artificially hold its performance back in my gaming machine. We can do this because the Uber Mode is an official AMD performance option shipping on every 290X, and everyone will be able to experience that mode, completely supported by AMD. You can argue the noise factor all you want, but if you hold a video card back in its potential, what are you really showing? We felt that Uber Mode is the setting that enthusiasts and gamers who use this card will relate to.

Why did you decide to use the list price of the 780ti for comparing prices ($719), and the MSRP of the 290x, ($549) which nobody is actually selling them at? Would you consider that an oversight or intellectual dishonesty?

I'm not sure where you are getting that, re-read the evaluation. We quoted the MSRP to be $699 directly from NVIDIA, and the MSRP from AMD exactly as they told us. We based our conclusions on this official MSRP. We did add a link to a card that is available for $719 to show availability, don't blame us cause the card is over the MSRP, we are just reporting it. The 290X didn't have availability on its launch to show.
