GTX 780 Ti to GTX 980

I right now have a GTX 780 Ti (reference design and clocks). The main thing that attracts me to the GTX 980 is that it has more VRAM than the 780 Ti and it's cheaper than the GTX 780 Ti. I don't care about the little speed increase over the GTX 780 Ti, just the VRAM size. I want more VRAM. Already Watch Dogs uses more than 3 GB VRAM at ultra settings and the 2 latest consoles have 8 GB of unified RAM although of course not all 8 GB would be used as VRAM on the 2 latest consoles. At the very worst I would probably lose about $50 if I sell my GTX 780 Ti and buy the GTX 980, assuming their is no price drop on the GTX 780 Ti by the time I sell it.

You can get 6GB GK110 if VRAM is all that matters to you.

But its a waste really.

Wait for GM200 instead, your GTX 780 Ti is still ok for games. GM200 will be a better upgrade for GTX 780 Ti owners.

Unless you're in the EU and pay somewhere north of $0.30 per kilowatt then it isn't worth it. The gtx980 to me smells like another gtx680 - a midrange card selling for high end prices.

Don't see a point until the faster version of maxwells are released. My 780ti at 1150 core is smoking fast.

Having said that, the 980 does seem to oc well also. I think at best the 980 is a lateral upgrade to the 780ti

I wouldn't be surprised if in 3+ months NV just slaps a 384bit interface on the 980 and makes it 6Gb (and of course charges a supreme premium).

It's just too easy and would be extremely profitable.

I think the 780Ti will hold its value reasonably well, but regardless of the fact that its performance is similar to the 980, there will be some people who just have to have the latest and greatest, so the used market supply should increase significantly, driving prices down.

780s now perform worse than the $329 970, so I expect the price decreases there will be even more substantial. In Canada, used 780s have been listing for ~$450, a position which is now untenable.

I'm looking at upgrading as well, but as you can see from my Sig, it's going to be a much bigger jump for me.

From what I'm hearing it's making me think of the GTX 7800 several years back.
I ended up grabbing that, only to have the GTX 7900 refresh come out a couple months later.

With all the talk of NV going to the next Die shrink early next year I see that as a very real possibility.

GTX 970 or GTX 980 Architecture on 20nm(?) equals a nice bump in performance and power usage.

I'd hold off since you have such a high end card already.

I don't see why you would, the 980GTX is not any faster than your reference design 780ti. Here's the benchmarks-

Not that it isn't a decent card for the price, it's just not any faster than last years 780ti design. It's like they re-released the 780ti with more SMX units, better power consumption, and clocks, not impressed....makes me happy because I just got 2x free 770 SC ACX sli from Evga Rma last month, they're still killing the 980GTX by miles.

Its 780 ti like performance and some new features at a lower price point. Its quite a big GPU for the price.

An OC card basically two steps down in SLI beats out a single ref card? OMG, *mind blown*

I was debating trading up for the 980, but I realize it's mostly a sidestep. I'll hold off for now, nothing really kills my system right now that warrants it.

I have not seen any overclocks yet. Even then reviewers usually have hand selected cards. The real world overclock capability is going to weigh heavily in this one. Used 780's were already 350-400. The 780 is a remarkable overclocker. Many will outperform most any current reference card. A classified 780ti at 1350 mhz is a BEAST. I hope the 980 has lots of headroom but its not looking that way. The reference speeds are already boosting over 1200 mhz. Even then it just outperforms the old 780ti that max boosts to 920mhz by 10-15%. 780 ghz edition is a faster card and over a year old.

Most anyone can get a 20% OC out of a 780 or 780ti with a little effort. Others can get closer to 30%. The 980 that is already at 1200+ is going to need 1500+ mhz to compare. That is an insane clock speed for a GPU. Any overclockers know power consumption increases exponentially the higher you push the OC.

Get the 970, sell the 780ti.

OC the 970.

Brands: MSI Gaming or Higher End EVGA (near top of their SKU)

A used 780ti is worth $300-$400 after this release. I'd guess it will settle closer to ~$325 with some quickness.

If the 970 or 980 can overclock and significantly outperform a 780ti at 1300 mhz I will rush out and buy 2 or 3. If the used market on 780ti drops that much I will consider 3 or 4 way SLI.

I don't think my 1300+ MHz Classified lost too much value.

It shouldnt, a reference 980 would need to hit ~1600mhz just to match a 1300mhz 780ti and most of the reference cards in reviews are only overclocking to the ~1450 range.

Most reviewers are getting under 20% overclocks on their reference maxwells whereas keplers due to its low base clock can easily gain 35% over stock. Top dog outside of ln2 cooling is still an OCed gk110.

Just wait for the SKYN3T bios and a voltage mod tool. 1700-1800Mhz should be no problem on water, probably even higher. Ryan got his to boost to 1515Mhz @ 1.25v

If I pick up a cheap HDMI 2.0 4K TV this holiday season, then I will be swapping my Lightning for a 980 (Classified or Lightning)- or maybe two reference 970's..?

Your talking about a classified edition that is likely months out. Maybe it can hit super high clocks. Would love to see it. Price will be another 100-150 higher. That will start to get pricy just to make a small improvement over a year old card.
