GTX 950 vs HD7770

Hi everyone

Just saw a good deal for GTX 950 at my local microcenter. I currently have a HD7770 and wonder how the GTX 950 would compare in performance, and what current AMD cards are comparable. Best as I can tell, GTX 950 should be in the ballpark of the AMD 370, and around twice as fast as the HD7770. Does this seem like an accurate evaluation?

Note, I am mainly interested in older games, DX11, 1080p. I realize newer cards are coming that should offer better performance for the price, but my current card is starting to show artifacts and waiting may not be an option. My cpu is an i5 2320 at stock, cant overclock because is an H series motherboard.

What's your budget? 950 isn't anything special. 280X smokes it and R9 390X (~ RX 480) is more than twice as fast. DX11 performance is a non-factor here since 950 is a slow videocard to begin with.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_1070/24.html

Given how long you kept your 7770, this will probably be the last GPU upgrade for your CPU. You can buy a $100 950 and upgrade the entire system in 2 years or buy an RX 480 and keep it for 3-4 and upgrade the CPU platform. Both choices make sense depending on your budget and length of time you want to keep the card for. The advantage of the 480 having ~2x more performance than the 950 means it'll last much longer, and is a much more worthwhile upgrade over ~4.5-year-old 7770. However, if your 7770's level of performance satisfies you and you don't plan to run any modern 2013-2018 DX11 games at the highest settings, then the 950 will be good.

The hybrid option is also good if you have a backlog of older DX11 games that aren't GPU demanding. Using this approach you would purchase a 950 now, use it for 2 years and then purchase an RX480 or a card with similar performance for $100-150 in 2 years when you reach more demanding modern titles in your game library.

how much you are paying for 950 ? if around 90-100$ i would suggest you to wait 10-15 days. new gpus from amd is launching on 29th. and you can have rx460 in that price which should perform better than 950 while only using 40-50watts. if anything the 950's price just going to drop more after 29th.

btw it should be 2x faster than 7770.

Yeah, I am inalmost same position. Just upgraded my CPU from a X3@3.3GHz to a FX8300, ram from 4GB To 12 and next in line would be GPU. Waiting for the real reviews for 460-80 to decide which would match me better. Hopefully a 470 can get me at 60fps v-sync as I don't intent to change my monitor for a looong time (had it for 5yrs, intent to at least double that). And because my main gaming is done in World of Tanks, I see no reason to go much higher... Maybe even a 480 would be overkill for that game...

I would recomend to wait for reviews and get a newer card like 460 or even 470 if it keeps near MSRP. Even if it means waiting 2-3 weeks after launch day

if it's cheap enough I think it's a good upgrade
950 can handle most games at 1080P (medium-high), 7770 can't.
950 is similar to the 7870 I think.

I don't think the 460 will bring a lot more performance compared to the 950, it's more about the price difference, 460 will be $100, if you paying that, or really close to that for the 950, it's probably not a horrible deal...

but, you've been stuck with the 7770 for a long time, right? it would probably make sense to wait another 10 days to properly evaluate the 460 and 470 as options,

460 and 470 may not be released on the 29th, but i would wait 10 more days and see how things will go. You could find a nice deal for a used card at $100 target after the first Polaris cards hit the retail.

The 950 I am looking at is 119.00, without dealing with a rebate. 480 will probably be a great deal, but 200.00 is simply more than I am willing to pay for a gpu, and is more performance than I need. 1080p, med to high, mostly older games is fine for me. Not really interested in any new or upcoming games at the moment.

460 or 470 might be in my league, but not sure what the price and availability will be. If the performance of the new AMD cards is as good as projected, I think they might be hard to get or sell over MSRP for a while. I would be in no hurry to upgrade, except the artifacts on my current system are getting progressively worse. Not even sure it is the video card. Occasionally the screen just goes blank for a while, then after a pause it comes back. Mainly happens in chrome, not really in games.

Well, if you are not sure that the arifacts are from video card, what will happen if you upgrade and discover you have another problem? I suggest if possible to borrow a VC from a friend and try to see if that is the problem, else it might be a failed buy...

Wait for 10 days to see how it'll play out ...

AMD usually doesn't release cut down parts with the fully enabled ones simultaneously but depending on your luck you may get the RX 470 soon enough or if not then a GTX 950 is probably your best bet ...

You've been around quite a while, mabe I'll sell you my Gigabyte G1 gamer gtx960 4gb cheap, get back to me in 2 or 3 weeks. 100$ or so? We can talk price later. Its a very large card though.

You can someday upgrade to a i7 2600, that would give you a massive boost also on the cheap.

I've got some MSI GTX950 2GB OC cards that I paid $119.99 ea. for. Could let one go for that shipped. Still NIB. Not really sure I want to replace my 7950 3GB cards yet. Not sure I have a use for the GTX950 cards. Kind of bought them on a whim, with the hope that I might be able to sell them for at least cost to several friends.

Edit: If you're getting artifacts, I would clean out the dust, and do some A/B testing with a different video card, and a different PSU, and see if they clear up. Would hate for you to spend $120 on a new video card and not solve the problem.

The 950 is surprisingly capable. Runs great for me. Cost almost nothing and DOOM looks amazing to me. Handles previous gen games like a champ. Big step up from integrated graphics. I'm going to replace it with a 1070 or something at some point but not yet and performance is good for me and my use cases so I feel no urgency. This 950 will eventually go into a box I'm going to build for my daughter to play minecraft.

Yea, that is the dilemma. I have an old 9800 GT I guess I could try just to see if the problem goes away.

Since you hold onto a GPU for years, it's best to wait 9 more days to see how the cheap Polaris plays out. It's a waste to buy old tech so close to next-gen, especially when it's confirmed cheap.

Somewhat painful to see a 960 in such a large card when it would be perfectly happy in a card half the size.

As long as they did it right that should be quieter than smaller cards. More fans, more heatsink, less noise. Since my case can fit large cards I'll definitely always get what is the quietest from now on.

I love overbuilt cards, they are perfect for overclocking quietly on air. I'm looking for something similar with the RX 480.

I'm replacing a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250. I'm not really a gamer.
Newegg has the EVGA GeForce GTX 950 02G-P4-2956-KR 2GB for $129,99 less $30 MIR bringing it to $99.99. It's in my price range. Is that a good Video card?

that's a huge upgrade, and for the money I don't think you will find a better card,

the RX 460 is potentially going to be very similar but we don't know when it's going to be released.

RX460 will be slower than GTX950.Like a good 20-25% slower.Don't understand why anyone would think otherwise.RX470 would be 20-25% faster faster but also cost more.So 950 will continue to retain its position although wouldn't recommend it due to 2gb vram.

Really?
Even it you put it at half the rx 480 perf it is still right where 950 is.
With paper spec of 7850 with a 50% boost clock speed and all the arch improvements it should be quite a bit faster than 270X.

So it should be at 960 levels.

Yeah, why not do that first? Depending on the age of the games can do just fine on a 9800GT. You be surprised how much stuff can run on old GPUs if turn you settings down.

I think it will be closer than that, more like 970 vs 480 (but a little better for the NV side)

950 for the launch price was not amazing, but for $99 it's good.
