Had a little time to install, do a fast overclock and a valley run. MSI Gaming 970 @ 1500/8000. Held the clock throughout the run.

Can't hear it at all. The only thing I don't like is that the fans totally stop at under 60C. Normally this would be a good thing, but it takes a long time for the card to cool down after use.
so you literally stay pegged at exactly 1500 mhz the whole time? I ranged from 1418 to 1466 during the run. it never went over 105% or over 71 C so I am not sure why my clocks never stay pegged in this or anything else.

Toyota, I am wondering if the problem is because you card has 2x6 power connectors and not the 1x6/1x8 connector when running overclocked.

well even oced my gpu is using no where near 225 watts so 2x 6pin and the slot power is WAY more than enough.

I am getting fed up with it though. even at out of box settings its hitting the TDP limit and even if I raise just that ito the max 106% it will hit it too. if I raise the clocks they they start going up and down and even voltage will start dropping way off. I am about to update my thread as this card is going back.

The other things I would try if you haven't aready is:

1.Run the card to test with fans on 100%.
2.Remove all over clocking software and drivers and reinstall, also maybe even a different card driver version if possible.

its not temps as the most it will hit is 72. I tried using both precision and afterburner and it does the identical thing on each. I already had a clean install of drivers so dont feel like fooling with it again. afterburner will show that I am exceeding the 106 target which is odd but its clearly wigging out right before 106.

Ok got it, I would still just try fans on at 100% (side panel off) if you haven't just for the heck of it/long shot, maybe a component on the card is heating up that might be weak/bad causing this when overclocked.

If it's worth anything, my 780 did the same thing for awhile. It bugged the crap out of me. I got busy and kind of forgot about it, but then a month or two later when I remembered (actually when the intake holes on my case were accidentally covered and I noticed my computer getting loud as shit), I started running afterburner again while gaming and clocks would lock in at their max boost in the same games they used to fluctuate in. Nothing had changed otherwise besides new drivers (I'm assuming).

I think this may turn out to be a case of early maxwell drivers being a little finnicky.

I am trying to find a 980 review where even when they raised the power limit the card did not maintain full boost the whole time. I cant for the life of me find it though.

on my 780 it would go right to max boost on full load and have a straight line that it never came off of unless the load was lifted.

mine stable OC results with gigabyte after playing BF3:

this is OC results after 30min in Valley benchmark:

ASIC value is only 65%

There is a little coil whine under load, but nevermind... so happy with this graphics card!

Yeah pegged there through several valley runs. I haven't had time to do anything else with it yet. What is your power limit ? This card is 110%. If you are getting throttling you are probably hitting the limit.

106 and it hits that even at out of box clocks. it just crashed in Valley while not even oced.

now to figure out what I want to buy next? reference 980? grr poor value...

What card model do you use? Many non reference cards come with super alloy chokes that should deal with coil whine, unless it's not helping on high OC...

The AT EVGA 970 review shows just 28C at idle, your fan threshold don't need to be anywhere near 90C, LOL.

yeaa but what is it worth if this evga is more noisy than a 290 at idle? Its lazy engineering made for cheap cards as mentioned.

I would be cool if i could play tf2 without active cooling !

Now then is there a way to run this off a single 6 pin? - undervolting ??

Palit's jetstream is doing the no fan at idle thing too. Seemingly even more aggressively so than MSI/ASUS in fact. (Maybe a double edged thing that.).

The people on the silent pc forums are unsurprisingly tracking these things.

Interesting question how far you could push these before getting noise. Not sure if anyone has really tested the limits yet. It seems to be temperature governed so stuff like TF2 might be possible in a well cooled case.

It can't have been a trivial thing to achieve in terms of engineering. I mean almost none of the 750ti's managed it Nice to have a fair bit of choice.

going from reference 680 to reference 980 I think these cards are even a little cooler running than 680. It may just be that the cooler is better but there's a noticeable difference in temps vs fan speeds between the two with 980 winning. Definitely a quiet videocard which is nice cus if you ever had a truly loud card in the past you know how bad it is, like a vacuum cleaner

How many here own the Gigabyte g1 GTX 970... And what are your thoughts on it??? (Does it suffer the same power limit Toyota is facing or )

Fill me in guys potentially interested in a purchase.

Didn't see this posted. PCPer interview with Tom Petersen, around the 1:24:30 mark he says SLI support is coming to DSR in a future driver update
What was new to me was in that video Tom explains that 2xMFAA only looks like 4xMSAA when the image is not in motion...and when the image is in motion, it's the same as 2xMSAA,that wasn't mentioned in the Game24 presentation.

Edit: Looking back on it what he said exactly was 2xMFAA looks identical to 4xMSAA in a static image or if there is very little motion where the scene doesn't change much where the frames are close enough to blend.
And when there is lots of motion it looks like 2xMSAA but you don't notice it in motion.. LINK

Interesting.... I'd like to know if that's true and you really don't notice the aliasing while in motion and it truly does seem like you're playing with 4xMSAA enabled.

Same question! Can't find a 970 in the solar system of ours...
I'm eyeing the Gigabyte or the MSI Gaming!

If anyone is interested? There is already a custom SKYN3T BIOS in the works which will disable GPU Boost 2.0 and unlock the power limit to 200%. This is being developed for the GTX 980 first, but the the GTX 970 should follow shortly thereafter.
